Abstract

This study uses translation techniques to compare euphemism and dysphemism translation from English into Indonesia in news articles on the Deutsche Welle (DW) online platform. The research employs a qualitative approach to identify the euphemism and dysphemism present in the source texts and to analyze the translation techniques used and their effect on the translation quality to convey these linguistic elements in the target language. The translation techniques are evaluated based on Molina and Albir's framework, while the translation quality is adapted from Nababan's framework. The findings indicate that the established equivalent is the most frequently used translation technique. Other techniques, such as modulation, generalization, and reduction, were found to have a more varied impact on the consistency and accuracy of the translations. This study highlights the importance of employing appropriate translation techniques to ensure that the intended meanings and effects of euphemism and dysphemism are effectively conveyed in the target language, especially in the context of news reporting. The insights gained from this research contribute to a deeper understanding of the challenges and strategies involved in translating sensitive linguistic elements and can serve as a valuable resource for translators, linguists, and educators in the field of translation studies.

Abstract

This research aimed to employ Van Dijk's Ideological Square to examine gender inequality in infidelity news comments on YouTube. The study used a qualitative research technique. According to the results, the most popular netizen comments concerned for Virgound and Syahnaz were "bad personality," with 53 (23%) and 59 (26%), respectively. This category shows that both commonly used unfavorable personal qualities as the major basis for their discourse topics. The researcher discussed several concerns online users raised regarding Virgoun and Syahnaz. There was a noticeable gender inequality in the YouTube comments on the Virgoun and Syahnaz episode. Despite these parallels, men and women were viewed differently by society, with men generally being viewed as justified and women as being held to higher moral standards. The researchers recommend that future studies employ more equal reporting practices for adultery and discriminate based on the gender of commentators.

Abstract

The linguistic status refers to how a language is classified within the linguistic landscape, indicating whether it is considered a distinct language or a variation of another language based on its linguistic characteristics. This research aimed to analyze the linguistic status of Bahasa Tansi from a linguistic perspective using a descriptive method. The study focused on the phonetic, phonological, morphological, and syntactic features of Bahasa Tansi. The findings reveal that Bahasa Tansi is identified as Tansi Creole in West Sumatra. This determination is based on a comparative analysis of 206 words from the Swadesh list between Bahasa Tansi and standard Minangkabau, questionnaire and supported by interview responses. The Swadesh list analysis, calculated using the dialectometry formula, reveals a 21.8% lexical difference and a 71.3% difference in phonetic and phonological features between Bahasa Tansi and the Minangkabau language. Additionally, the questionnaire results highlight unique morphological features in Bahasa Tansi, specifically simpler affixes compared to Bahasa Indonesia, while its syntactic features share similarities with Bahasa Indonesia. Interview responses further corroborate the distinctiveness of Bahasa Tansi as a separate language from both Minangkabau and Bahasa Indonesia. Consequently, this study concludes that Tansi is considered as a creole in West Sumatera. Key words: Language Variations, Language Status, Bahasa Tansi, Creole.

Abstract

The interactional value of medical discourse, as a genre of spoken communication, is often affected by specific contextual and anthropological issues arising from the diversity in the sociocultural backgrounds of interlocutors. Apart from these factors of contextual orientation are important factors that impact on the interactional value of medical discourse. The aim of this study was to examine the characteristics of two distinct cultures within the Nigerian set-up and their impact on doctor-patient interaction. More specifically, the study examines how the anthropological characteristics of the Nupes/ Yorubas influence the adoption of accommodation strategies in medical discourses, towards the achievement of the communicative goal. Also, how power and ideology are reflected and managed in the medical discourse in these distinct cultures are critically examined in this study. To achieve the study aim, two purposively selected doctor-patient conversations in the two cultures, Yoruba and Nupe, were analysed using the tenets of Communication Accommodation Theory CAT. The study found that even though cultural difference abounds in the selected medical-discourse under investigation and has proven to be a constant factor to reckon with, the choice and use of accommodation strategies depend on the individual linguistic prowess. Despite the fact that the adoption of convergence strategies is an expected norm in medical discourse, power, which is associated with class and age difference among interlocutors often result to the use of divergence strategy.
