Abstract

Jakarta in Imaginary City by Rain Chudori (2017) presents how psychogeography theory shows that environmental effects can influence people's ways of thinking, behaviour and emotions. This study aims to prove how Jakarta as a setting of imaginary city affects the emotions and behaviour of characters. Therefore, there are four key words in this novel Dérive, Flâneur, Sense of place, and Place Attachment. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative by applying the theory of Psychogeography. The use of the concept is based on the interpretation of the text and in the context of the novel. This analysis also uses many fictional elements such as plot, character, conversation and setting to reveal the meaning contained in the novel. The result of the research shows that there are three keywords that can be proven in this novel based on psychogeography theory.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the politeness strategies used in Yes Day (2021) movie. The research used descriptive qualitative method. The source of data was the Yes Day movie that focused on the script of movie. The data were all of the requesting utterances that uttered by all of the characters of Yes Day movie. The data were analysed using Brown and Levinson (1987) politeness theory. The researcher found four types of politeness strategies; they are bald on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, off record strategy, and no don’t do the FTA. The result of the research showed that bald on-record was the most appeared strategy in Yes Day movie. Meanwhile, off record strategy was the least used strategy in Yes Day movie.

Abstract

This thesis is an analysis of the Drama Reasons to Be Ptetty (2008) by Neil LaBiute. The purpose of this analysis is to expose the issue of beauty standard impact in American culture.  This analysis is also intended to expose how the contribution of fictional elements (character and action/plot) in revealing the form of the bad impact of beauty standard in American Culture. This analysis is related to the concept of feminism by Naomi Wolf.. The result of this analysis shows the female character gets the bad impact of beuaty standard which are discriminiation and oppression.

Abstract

AbstractThis study sought to identify the many sorts of logical fallacies used in Indonesian television debates, notably those made by students who participated in the 2019 protests and rioting there. This is a descriptive study that takes a qualitative approach. In this study, the five categories and sixty-two types of fallacies introduced by Damer's (2009) theory of fallacy classification were used. There were eighteen of the sixty different types identified. First, the results revealed that students consistently violated the acceptability and rebuttal criteria in their arguments, using five different fallacies in each category. Second, with a frequency of 27.98%, poisoning the well was the type of fallacy that students used the most frequently, followed by the two-wrong fallacy with a frequency of 10.29% and manipulation of emotion with a frequency of 8.82%.

Abstract

English is used by many non-native English speakers from all around the world. Because of that, the mother tongue influences when they speak foreign language or their second language. Thus, this research analysed the error of English vowels pronounced by Korean Speaker based on phonetic and phonology. This research used descriptive method which according to this research means collecting language symptoms in the form of words. The data were collected from a Korean Drama entitled Descendant of the Sun in several episodes in a form of words. To obtain data, this research used listening method which listened directly by the researcher and then validated by a native speaker. The finding shows that there are six monophthongs and three diphthongs of English vowel which are incorrectly pronounced by the Korean Speakers. Those errors are /ə/, /e/, /eɪ/, /æ/, /ɑ/, /ʊ/, /ɪ/, /iə/, and /oʊ/ which are substituted by /ɛ/, /o/, /ɪ/, /ɔ/, /ʌ/, /u/, /ɪə/, /ɪ/, /ɛʌ/, /ɑ/.

Abstract

This research is an analysis of the novel by Jojo Moyes entitled Me Before You (2012). The objective of this research is to find out the forms of masculinity depicted in this novel. This study employs masculinity theory to analyzed the novel and supported by feminist theory and patriarchy theory. This a qualitave descritipve by using masculinity theory which supported by feminist literary theory and patriarchy ideologies. The results of this study shows there are several forms of masculinity depicted in this novel which are; strength, power, stoicism, action, control, independence and self-sufficiency. The result of this research shows that disability is the opposite of what is called masculine. A masculine man must have strength, power, stoicism, action, control, independence, self-sufficiency, male companionship, mateship and work.

Abstract

In logical function analysis, the analysis deals with clause complexes form which is the meaning relation of each clause in the clause complex. This thesis is about the logical function analysis used in the thread about vaccines in social media twitter. The objective of this research is to find out the types of logical function analysis in the threads about vaccines which is in clause complexes form. This research is conducted by qualitative descriptive approach which means this research makes the description of the situation. The data of this research is from the thread 1 about vaccine by Prof. Christine Pagel on her twitter account. The thread consists of 10 tweets that are 35 clause complexes. And the other data is from the thread 2 by Nida Qadir, MD on her twitter account. The thread consists of 5 tweets that are 21 clause complexes. The finding of this research is indicated that there are 2 main types of logical function; expansion and projection. In analyzing thread 1, there were 19 elaboration, 3 extension, 12 enhancement, and 1 types of idea. There is no locution type in thread 1. In analyzing the thread 2, there are 9 elaboration, 3 extension, 7, enhancement, 1 locution, and 1 idea.

Abstract

People usually choose different codes in different situation in every interaction. The phenomenon of code-switching is common in bilingualism and occurs in conversation. Code-switching occurs when conversation use two languages together to the extent that they change from one language to other in the course of a single utterance. By using qualitative method, this study was aimed to analyze the types and function of code-switching found in the utterance spoken by people in Lembah Segar sub-district. The researcher analyzed sixty three utterance of Minangkabaunese-Tansi language switched spoken by people in Lembah Segar sub-district. Romaine’s (1995) theory is applied in this research to find the types of code-switching. To finding the functions of code-switching the researcher used Gumperz’s (1982) theory. The result of this study shows that the intra-sentential switching was the most common type of code-switching. Also, Interjection was the most function of code-switching used by people in Lembah Segar sub-district. This research gives a contribution in sociolinguistics fields. It is because the result of this study shows the  relation of language and society.

Abstract

This research to see the extent of Robin Benway's novel Far From the Tree (2017) raises the issue of defense mechanisms. The defense mechanism refers to characters who face problems with their status as adopted children. The three teenage characters in the novel experience different problems because they are adopted by different families. This analysis is related to the theory of psychoanalysis put forward by Phebe Cramer (2008). The use of theory was based on the interpretation in the text and context of the novel. The data was collected from the quotation in the novel. The data collection was in the form of sentences and paragraphs. This research is qualitative research. In this study, the defense mechanism was examined in the novel Far From the Tree. The results showed that the character of adopted adolescents uses defense mechanisms as a form of self-protection from the problems they face.

Abstract

This study is aimed to find out (1) the discourse topics and (2) the discourse strategies from the utterances produced by Asian-Americans as the victim of the racist attack during the Covid-19 outbreak to reveal how they voice their ideologies in defending themselves and maintaining their existence in society. The researcher employs a qualitative method considering the data are in the form of written-text and also analyse the humanities and social sciences. Specifically, the researcher analysed the discourses presented in several videos from YouTube that being transcribed into written discourses. This study focuses on how Asian-Americans portray themselves and others in their discourses based on their beliefs. From seven videos being analysed, the researcher has collected 80 data that consist of the Positive-Self and Negative-Others presentation. By utilizing Van Djik’s Ideological Square, the researcher found out there are 16 discourse topics implied in Asian-Americans’ utterances, such as ‘We are also Americans’, ‘Anti-Asian-Americans is terrifying’, etc.  Furthermore, there are 22 discourse strategies used by Asian-Americans in defending themselves. The study reveals Asian-Americans as the racist-victim attempt to emphasize the Anti-racism movement. Moreover, the researcher has found that several discourses consist of negative-attitude towards majorities or Americans society.
