Abstract

Word formation process is the tool to form a new word based on several techniques that involve the word itself. The aim of this research is to analyze and to find out the types and the most dominant types of word formation process of words related to food used by food vloggers. The data of this research were utterances from the food vloggers namely Luke Martin, Trevor James, Mark Wiens, Mina Oh, Mike Chen, and Sonny Side in their vlogs on YouTube. The data were analyzed based on several word formation process theories. This research used descriptive method. Based on the data analysis, the researcher found 196 words containing the word formation process related to food and 7 out of 11 types of word formation process. They are (1) borrowing, (2) compounding, (3) clipping, (4) conversion, (5) derivation, (6) inflection, and (7) multiple process. The finding shows that this research is dominated with borrowing process with the frequency of 60 data (31%).

Abstract

This article is about the analysis of a play Between Riverside and Crazy (2015) by Stephen Adly Guirgis. The problem of this analysis focuses on the issue of Systemic Racial. Systemic racial reflects the gap between White Amricans and African Americans. The aim of this analysis to find out the form of Systemic racial and to what extend do in fictional devices. The analysis deals with Joe R. Feagin’s concept of oppression. The result of this analysis shows that the discrimination and oppression happened to African Americans that cause by White Americans.

Abstract

Multimodality is a study that studies how a meaning is formed from different modes simultaneously both verbally and visually. In this study, we analyze the differences in meaning in verbal analysis on insurance advertisements for Jasaraharja and Prudential insurance advertisements. This study aims to find differences in the verbal meaning of the two insurance advertisements using the Systemic Functional Linguistics theory of Halliday and Manthiessen (2004). The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. The results showed that in Jasaraharaja advertisements, verbal use, both oral and written, was higher than in Prudential advertisements. The results showed that there were some differences in the two advertisements in using Systemic Functional Linguistics, namely the analysis of mental affective process, mental perceptive process, existential processes, exclamative, affect happiness, affect security, affect satisfaction, judgment social esteem negative, appreciation positive, negative appreciation, low probability, low high usuality high inclination, high obligation, conjunctive theme and wh-question theme. The differences are dominated by Jasaraharja insurance advertisements.

Abstract

This research is an analysis of the story by Rain Chudori entitled Smoking with God, The Dollhouse and The Sandcastle (2015). This analysis explores how the character deals with loneliness in each story. The study of this novel is analysed with the psychoanalysis theory and supported by human psyche and defence mechanism. The results of this study show that part of the psychoanalysis of the human psyche and defence mechanism that occurs in the character. This research will include; 1) human psyche and 2) defence mechanism.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the functions, types, and differences in swear words between male and female in the Uncut Gems movie. The purpose of this research is to find out the types of swear words, the purposes, and the differences of swear words uttered by male and female characters in Uncut Gems movie. This research employed the descriptive-qualitative method. The data of this research were words, phrases, clauses, and sentences consisting of swear words which were selected from the dialogues of male and female characters in the Uncut Gems movie. While the source of data was the script of the Uncut Gems movie. This study showed that the use of swear words is dominated by the male characters compared to the female. The most dominant type of swear word used by both genders is emphasis. Male characters use swear words mostly to create attention while the female is to provide catharsis. Both male and female characters tend to be more aggressive when uttering swear words. However, when it comes to the variety and range of swear words themselves, it appears that male characters do use more than female characters. This research found that there are two types of swear words, stand-alone and slot-filler. Stand-alone has four functions expletive interjection, curses, unfriendly suggestion, and name-calling. The slot-filler also has four functions adjective/adverbial intensifier, the adjective of dislike, emphasis, and anaphoric use of epithet. At least five purposes of swear words were found to create attention, discredit, provoke, create interpersonal identification, and provide catharsis.

Abstract

This study examined the types, and the patterns of compound words used in It Ends with Us and Where the Crawdads Sing novel. This research employed McCarthy’s (2002) types and patterns of compound words to determine how the words are formed. This research used a descriptive quantitative methodology. The data were the compound words found in 35 chapters of It Ends with Us and 57 chapters of Where the Crawdads Sing novels. There were 146 compound words in It Ends with Us and 278 compound words in Where the Crawdads Sing novel. The findings show that a compound noun is the most dominant compound type that occurs in both novels. The compound words found in both novels were formed by more patterns than the ones that were proposed by McCarthy (2002). The authors of both novels write the compound words by adding a hyphen and more words to describe the details of what is being described in the story. It can be concluded that It Ends with Us novel focuses more on the occurrence of repeated words, whereas Where the Crawdads Sing novel focuses more on variations in patterns.

Abstract

Human use language in their interaction in daily life to convey or deliver their thoughts and communicate with each other. This research belonged to the descriptive qualitative research to find out ecolexicons and the description of each ecolexicon based on the knowledge of community in Nagari Gunuang using triple dimension of social praxis. Based on data analysis and discussion found 30 words belonged to ecolexicons. Afterward, the data were classified into three categories biotic flora, biotic fauna, and abiotic. The researcher found 28 biotic lexicons, 22 of them are categorized as flora lexicons and 6 of them are categorized as fauna lexicons. On the other hand, abiotic lexicon was found only 2 by the researcher. Lexicons about biotic flora are considered as the most dominant type of ecolexicons that found. Among 22 biotic flora lexicons, 4 of them are classified as death words because it no longer used in daily life and unrecognized by the informant or society.

Abstract

This article discusses a novel entitled Convenience Store Woman (2016) by Sayaka Murata. The issue raised is about the stereotype of women who are influenced by patriarchal culture and gender discrimination in society. This article aims to explain the forms of woman stereotypes and also show how woman characters can breaks these stereotypes. The descriptive qualitative method was used in this research, which applied Simone De Beauvoir's theory of existentialist feminism and Mansour Fakih's concept of gender discrimination about the relationship with the concept of gender that leads to discrimination. The results of the analysis show that the stereotype of women consists of three forms, namely women as mothers, women as incompetent people, women as sex objects.

This analisys deal with transformative ecofeminism theory. This study aims to find the forms of patriarchy domination toward women and to investigate women’s resistance toward patriarchy domination.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the differences and the similarities between male and female English department students in using apology strategies. The are five types of apology strategies according to Olshtain and Cohen (1983); 1) expression of apology, 2)offer of repair, 3)explanation of account, 4)acknowledgement responsibility for offense, and 5)promise of forbearence.. The method used in this research was a descriptive-qualitative. The data samples were taken from English Department students at Padang State University. Data was retrieved using a questionnaire form. The data were collected in form of sentences which were the utterances of the participant. The results of the study showed that male and female have some differences and similarities in using apology strategies. Both female and male students use all five of types of apology strategies. The most preferred type of strategy by both female and female was expression of apology and the least preferable was promise forbearance. The result reveals that male and female students tend to use similar strategies in making apology.
