Abstract

Mangrove degradation along the northern coast of West Java threatens coastal ecological stability and the resilience of brackishwater aquaculture systems, especially milkfish (Chanos chanos) and saline tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) ponds. This study assessed the multidimensional sustainability typology of integrated mangrove-aquaculture systems in Bekasi, Karawang, Subang, and Indramayu Regencies using Multidimensional Unfolding (MDU) in IBM SPSS Statistics. Primary data were collected from 437 valid respondents through purposive sampling. The instrument consisted of 31 indicators across ecological, economic, social, and legal-institutional dimensions, measured using a four-point Likert scale from low agreement to strong agreement. Before spatial mapping, the regional score matrix was examined using a construct-level regional score association test and internal consistency analysis. The regional score vectors were significantly associated with the total sustainability score (r = 0.576-0.857; p <= 0.001), and Cronbach's Alpha reached 0.933. MDU generated a two-dimensional joint plot with very low stress and high dispersion accounted for, indicating that the regional-attribute configuration was adequate for interpretation. Karawang was associated with zoning, rehabilitation, ecotourism, participation, and legal status; Indramayu with fauna diversity, social conflict, and community-induced degradation; Bekasi with mangrove density, community access, and local knowledge; and Subang with erosion protection and inter-institutional coordination. Complementary MDS-based leverage analysis identified sensitive attributes within each dimension. The results show that mangrove management should be designed asymmetrically by integrating conservation, pond resilience, livelihood diversification, conflict resolution, and fisheries agribusiness development

Abstract

The giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) is an economically valuable species native to Indonesia, notable for its sexual dimorphism where males outgrow females in both biomass and meat yield. Sex reversal utilizing 17α-methyltestosterone (MT) offers a viable strategy to enhance male production. This study evaluated the masculinization effects of feeding MT-enriched Artemia to larvae at different developmental stages: zoea 1–4 (P1), zoea 5–8 (P2), and zoea 9–10 (P3), using a hormone concentration of 80 mg/L. Results indicated that MT administration did not significantly affect larval or post-larval survival rates. However, all treatment groups exhibited a significantly higher percentage of males compared to the control group, with no significant differences observed among the treatments themselves. In conclusion, feeding larvae an 80 mg/L dose of 17α-methyltestosterone encapsulated in Artemia is an effective method for enhancing male production in M. rosenbergii aquaculture.

Abstract

Vibrio outbreaks pose a severe threat to intensive pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) aquaculture, necessitating effective waterborne biocontrol strategies. This study evaluated the efficacy of a commercial multispecies probiotic formulation on the dynamic abundance of Vibrio spp. within the centralized inlet and outlet channels of an intensive shrimp farm. A field-based observational monitoring was conducted weekly for four weeks. Total Vibrio Count (TVC), Vibrio alginolyticus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, and water quality parameters (pH, DO, salinity) were quantified from surface water samples. The outlet channel consistently exhibited a significantly higher TVC than the inlet, acting as a microbial accumulation zone. Following twice-weekly probiotic application, Vibrio alginolyticus in the outlet decreased from 3.87 to 3.41 log10 CFU/mL due to rapid competitive exclusion. Conversely, Vibrio parahaemolyticus demonstrated greater resilience, showing a temporary nutrient-induced bloom in Week 3 (2.67 log10 CFU/mL) before declining significantly to 1.77 log10 CFU/mL by Week 4, indicating a slower, time-dependent suppression mechanism. Non-target Citrobacter freundii remained unaffected due to innate outer membrane resistance. Environmental fluctuations, particularly suboptimal salinity and pH in the effluent, acted as synergistic stressors that enhanced probiotic competitiveness. Multispecies probiotics are highly effective yet strain-specific biocontrol agents. Continuous dosing combined with centralized effluent treatment is essential to prevent pathogen discharge into the surrounding marine environment.
