Abstract

One of the major constraints in chili production system in Indonesia is the fruit fly attack on chili fruits. These pests often lead to crop failure if not treated seriously. One way used to suppress the pest population is the use of Methyl Eugenol attractant compound (Petrogenol 800 L). The study was conducted to determine the effect of methyl eugenol dose and catching time difference on fruit flies that were caught. The study took place in Waimital Village, Kairatu Subdistrict, West Seram District. The research was conducted in an experiment using a Randomized Block Design (RAB) with 5 treatments, namely: (A) 0.5 ml of methyl eugenol, (B) 1 ml of methyl eugenol, (C) 1.5 ml of methyl eugenol, (D) 2 ml methyl eugenol, (E) 2.5 ml of methyl eugenol, placed in a each trap. Observations were conducted when the insects were active at 10.00 (06.00-10,00 period) and when the insects were inactive at 18:00 hours (11:00 to 18:00 period) on the number of fruit fly imagoes that were captured. The results showed that the effective methyl eugenol dose to catch Bactrocera dorsalis was in treatment C (1.5 ml, with 32.53 fruit flies caught per day or 97.67 fruit flies catches during three days of observation. The highest number of catch for 3 days was at 2,5 ml, with 118.60 fruit flies caught.

Abstract

Taro is a staple food source in several regions of Indonesia. One type of this crop, namely Japanese taro or satoimo [Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott var. antiquorum], is widely consumed in Japan so that there are export opportunities into the country. To overcome the problem of lack of propagules in the cultivation of taro, quality seed production can be done with micro propagation. This study aimed to obtain MS tissue culture media with the right concentration of adenine sulfate for Japanese taro micro propagation. The study was designed as a single factor experiment with a Completely Randomized Design, with an experimental factors of adenine sulfate concentration consisting of 5 levels, namely: A0 (control, 0 mg / l), A1 (10 mg / l), A2 (60 mg / l ), A3 (110 mg / l), A4 (160 mg / l), and with 5 replications. The use of MS media with BAP 0.5 mg /l + adenine sulfate 160 mg/l gave the best results for shoot multiplication with an average number of shoots produced 21.40 per culture bottle, at 12 weeks after culturing. The success percentage of plantlet acclimatization was 86%, and tissue cultur propagules subsequently was able to grow normally under ex vitro conditions.

Abstract

Tuber of Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is a source of food and industrial raw materials. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of physical treatment of cuttings on the production of cassava plants. The treatment that was tried was the physical treatment of cuttings, by being tapered, chopped, scraped, and tapered and without treatment as a control. The study used a randomized block design with four replications. The responses observed were the number and weight of tubers, and the carbohydrate content. The results showed that the physical treatment of cuttings affected the number and weight of tubers, but did not affect the carbohydrate content. The highest number of tubers and the weight of tubers is found in the tubers of the plant with tapered cuttings. The average low number and weight of tubers from plants which were treated physically on cuttings and controls compared with the physical treatment of tapered cuttings was 40.54% number tuber and 48.35% weight tuber. The average carbohydrate content is 29.62%.Keywords: Cassava, cuttings, Manihot esculenta, production

Abstract

Agricultural activity is largely determined by the local climate. Climate plays a vital role in  planning agricultural production systems because all of  climate elements has a major influence on various physiological processes, the growth and productivity of plants. In determining the suitability of land for food crops, especially rice plant, level slope data and average values of several weather elements such as rainfall, humidity, temperature and dry months that occurred within a year were requires. Having earned an average values of some elements of the weather, the land suitability analysis can be determined by some criteria. Based on the result of land suitability analysis, there is no area with high land suitability (S1), but more than 50% of the area qualifies as a moderate land suitability (S2). This area lies in the western and southern Merauke
