Veritas: Jurnal Teologi dan Pelayanan is a peer-reviewed and open-access journal published semiannually (June and December) by Sekolah Tinggi Teologi SAAT (Southeast Asia Bible Seminary), Malang City, East Java, Indonesia. The journal specializes in evangelical theology that focuses on the novelty in biblical studies, systematic theology, and practical theology, contributing to theological studies and ecclesial ministry. Manuscripts submitted for publication in this journal include quantitative or qualitative field research findings, conceptual and critical studies, exegesis or exposition material, case studies, and other forms of original thought in the broad scope of theological research, supported with academic references that are adequate, robust, and accurate.

Abstract

Evidence of God's Righteous Judgment in 2 Thessalonians 1:3-10 According to Discourse Analysis Approach. The theme of the righteous judgment of God is an important theme in 2 Thessalonians 1. This theme has a connection with the situation of the Thessalonians, who were currently undergoing persecution. This paper will explain how Paul developed the theme of God's righteous judgment in 2 Thessalonians 1:3-10 by using the discourse analysis approach. This paper will demonstrate that a righteous God will judge everyone by punishing the oppressors and rewarding the believers. Discourse analysis is used in this paper because it is an approach that can provide a stronger foundation when analyzing a text and provides objective criteria when investigating the problem of a text. The purpose of this paper is to encourage believers to have comfort and strength when experiencing persecution because a righteous God will judge every human being.

Abstract

Salah satu unsur penting dalam pelayanan gereja yang terabaikan adalah peran sosial gereja untuk mewujudkan kesejahteraan. Padahal warga jemaat berhadapan dengan berbagai isu sosial. Salah satu yang cukup krusial adalah kemiskinan. Dalam upaya merevitalisasi pelayanan gereja, salah satu yang perlu diwujudkan adalah integrasi antara kepedulian sosial dan pelayanan gereja. Artikel ini akan menjelaskan bahwa gereja memiliki panggilan dan tanggung jawab sosial. Fondasi bagi gagasan ini adalah karakteristik pelayanan Yesus yang termuat dalam Lukas 4:18-19, yang merupakan kutipan dari Yesaya 61:1-2; 58:6. Berdasarkan penggunaan Yesaya 61:1-2 yang dikombinasikan dengan Yesaya 58:6, artikel ini menunjukkan bahwa penulis Injil Ketiga memodifikasi kutipan tersebut untuk memperkuat karakteristik sosial dalam pelayanan Yesus. Dimensi sosial pelayanan Yesus merupakan landasan penting untuk membangun pelayanan gerejawi yang memiliki kesadaran sosial untuk membentuk kehidupan umat secara menyeluruh. Dalam menguraikan gagasannya, artikel ini akan menerapkan metode kualitatif yang berorientasi pada studi literatur dan analisis hermeneutika. Adapun pendekatan hermeneutika yang akan diterapkan berfokus pada pembacaan Injil sebagai biografi Yunani-Romawi. Prinsip-prinsip yang umum digunakan dalam metode kritik naratif juga akan diterapkan. Karena adanya kutipan dari Kitab Yesaya, pendekatan hermenutika yang digunakan juga akan menganalisis cara penulis Injil Ketiga menggunakan teks Yesaya tersebut. Artikel ini akan berfokus pada tiga aspek, yaitu karakteristik sosial Injil Ketiga, karakteristik sosial pelayanan Yesus berdasarkan Lukas 4:18-19, dan implikasi dimensi sosial pelayanan Yesus bagi upaya revitalisasi pelayanan gereja. One important element that neglected in church ministry is the social responsibility of the church in realizing the well-being of the community. Whereas the congregation is dealing with various social issues. One that is quite crucial is poverty. In an effort to revitalize church ministry, one that needs to be realized is the integration of social care and church ministry. This article will explain that the church has social calling and responsibility. The foundation for this idea is the characteristics of Jesus' ministry conveyed by Luke 4:18-19, which is a quotation from Isaiah 61:1-2; 58:6. Based on the use of Isaiah 61:1-2 combined with Isaiah 58:6, this article shows that the writer of the Third Gospel modified the quotation to strengthen social characteristics in Jesus' ministry. The social dimension of Jesus' ministry is an important foundation for building church ministries that have social awareness to shape the lives of believers holistically. This article will apply qualitative methods that focus on literary study and hermeneutical analysis. The hermeneutical approach applied here focuses on reading the Gospels as Greco-Roman biography. The principles commonly used in narrative criticism will also be applied. Because of the quotation from the Book of Isaiah, this article will also analyze the way the writer of the Third Gospel used the text of Isaiah. This article will focus on three aspects, namely the social characteristics of the Third Gospel, the social characteristics of Jesus' ministry based on Luke 4: 18-19, and the implications of the social dimension of Jesus' ministry for revitalizing church ministry.

Abstract

Di dalam studi dan teologi biblika, pertanyaan yang didiskusikan sampai dewasa ini adalah apakah tema atau motif Alkitab yang dapat mempersatukan alur cerita dari PL sampai PB? Artikel ini mengusulkan motif kehadiran Tuhan sebagai jawabannya, yakni kehadiran Allah yang berdiam di antara umat-Nya. Tuhan yang rindu untuk dekat dengan umat-Nya dengan menyatakan kehadiran di tempat-tempat kudus di sepanjang catatan Alkitab. Dengan menggunakan studi kata, studi intertekstual dalam kanon Alkitab, dan studi ekstrabiblika; artikel ini menunjukkan bahwa kehadiran-Nya dipusatkan di tempat-tempat kudus yang didirikan-Nya di dalam dunia ini mulai dari Taman Eden pada penciptaan yang pertama, Kemah Suci, Bait Allah, gereja, sampai kepada penciptaan langit dan bumi yang baru. Artikel ini bertujuan menyajikan suatu gambaran alkitabiah tentang kehadiran Allah di tengah-tengah umat-Nya dan implikasinya bagi kehidupan Kristiani. In biblical studies and biblical theology, a central question still discussed until today is the following: what theme or motif can unify the biblical storyline from OT to NT? This article proposes that the motif of the presence of God, who indwells among His people, as the answer. God, who desires to be near to His people, reveals His presence in holy places across biblical accounts. By using word studies, intertextual studies in the canonical bible, and extrabiblical studies, this article demonstrates that God's revealing of His presence focused in holy places that He established in this world, began from the Garden of Eden in the first creation and extended through the Tabernacle, the Temple, the Church, to the creation of the new heaven and earth. The purpose of this article is to present a biblical overview of the presence of God among His people and its implications for the Christian life.

Abstract

Buku ini adalah karya yang terbaru dalam genrenya. Namun, buku ini bukan yang terbaru dalam pendekatannya?sejarah, sastra dan teologi, sebab Mark Allan Powell telah menulis pengantar Perjanjian Baru (PB) dengan metode yang sama. Kendati demikian, buku ini unik. Pertama, sebagai buku sederhana atau contoh agar mudah dipahami (reader atau sampler) mengenai pemikiran N.T. Wright. Hal ini tidak terlepas dari usulan Michael F. Bird supaya Wright menulis buku pengantar PB, setelah Wright menulis banyak buku mengenai PB. Kedua, buku ini bertujuan menjadi buku yang handal dan ramah. Handal karena ditulis untuk memahami kekristenan mula-mula dan ramah karena dilengkapi buku kerja, pembelajaran online, bahan video dan audio, serta kurikulum berbasis jemaat. Ketiga, buku ini berusaha menghindar dari beberapa problem umum yang biasa disajikan dalam buku pengantar PB. Bila dipandang perlu, hal mengenai itu telah ditulis dengan teliti, singkat dan mudah dicerna. Ketika menjelaskan masing-masing kitab dalam PB, buku ini memberikan pengantar singkat, diskusi persoalan penting dan kontekstual, garis besar kitab, komentar singkat, dan tips untuk aplikasi dan penyelidikan lebih lanjut.

Abstract

John Lennox adalah seorang profesor emeritus di bidang matematika dari Universitas Oxford di Inggris, dosen emeritus bidang matematika dan filsafat sains di Green Templeton College serta pengajar di The Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics. Dalam karir akademisnya, Lennox giat membela iman Kristen di dalam debat-debat publik menghadapi para ateis terkenal seperti Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens dan Peter Singer. Tulisan-tulisan dalam buku ini lahir dari perenungan Lennox terhadap situasi kegelisahan dan kebingungan yang sedang melanda dunia ini  akibat pandemi virus Corona. Untuk itu, Lennox mengundang para pembacanya seumpama sedang berdialog dengannya di kafe sambil minum kopi dan bertanya: ?Di manakah Allah di tengah dunia yang dilanda virus Corona?? Meskipun ditulis dalam waktu relatif singkat dan dengan jumlah halaman yang tidak banyak, buku ini memberikan wawasan yang cukup secara teologis, historis dan saintifik mengenai pandemi yang sedang terjadi saat ini. Tidak hanya itu, Lennox juga berupaya sensitif terhadap penderitaan yang sedang dihadapi pembacanya dengan menceritakan pengalaman-pengalaman pribadi dan keluarganya ketika menghadapi sakit penyakit.

Abstract

Awal tahun 2020 ditandai dengan satu peristiwa yang mengejutkan seluruh dunia. Virus Corona baru yang merebak di Wuhan, China sejak akhir 2019, secara masif mulai menyebar ke berbagai negara di seluruh penjuru dunia, menjadi sebuah pandemi yang disebut COVID-19 (Corona Virus Disease 2019). Umat manusia di seluruh dunia dihadapkan pada satu kondisi yang mengejutkan dan meluluhlantakkan berbagai sendi kehidupan. Bukan hanya kekuatiran akan penderitaan fisik yang diakibatkan oleh COVID-19, namun juga seluruh aspek kehidupan politik, ekonomi, sosial, hingga religiositas dan spiritualitas manusia menjadi terganggu. Masalah penderitaan dapat diumpamakan seperti "tumit Achilles" bagi iman Kristen atau dengan kata lain sebagai titik lemah dari iman Kristen. Manusia sudah bergumul selama berabad-abad untuk menjawab pertanyaan bagaimana mungkin Allah yang baik dan penuh kasih mengizinkan kejahatan dan penderitaan sedemikian merajalela di dalam dunia ciptaan-Nya, dan hingga hari ini masih terus bergumul dengan pertanyaan yang sama. Terlebih lagi saat ini ketika melihat kondisi dunia yang porak-poranda akibat pandemi COVID-19, di antara kita mungkin ada yang bertanya apakah Allah sungguh ada? Apakah Dia Allah yang berdaulat yang masih terus bertindak di dalam dunia ini ataukah Dia sudah lepas tangan? Apakah Dia Allah yang baik dan peduli terhadap penderitaan yang terjadi di dalam dunia? Jika Dia Allah yang mahabaik, mengapa Dia menciptakan dunia ini dengan virus patogen yang menyebabkan penyakit mematikan? Lalu, bagaimanakah kita sebagai umat Allah dapat berkarya menyatakan kehadiran-Nya yang mahakuasa dan mahabaik itu secara konkret kepada dunia yang sedang bergumul saat ini? Beberapa pertanyaan krusial di atas akan didiskusikan dan dijawab dalam editorial ini.

Abstract

Calvin and the Potential of His Thought for Christian Worship. This article presents the potential of some of John Calvin's thoughts on Christian worship for today and the future. Worship according to Calvin does not seem promising to be developed in the present context because it is often considered too narrow. This article seeks to present a contrary perspective without intending to show the superiority of Calvin’s thought about worship. This article would like to share the contribution of Calvin’s thought that can serve as a guide and correction for contemporary worship. For this reason, I will discuss the principles of Calvin’s theology, which are applied in aspects of worship, Calvin's view of the so-called liturgical sins, and metaphors used by Calvin to explain worship. Methodologically, this article seeks to draw from and contextualize Calvin’s thoughts on worship but does not offer comprehensive and historical discussion in the strict sense. Calvin’s thoughts on worship not only go beyond the subject of the use of musical instruments and psalms but also has rich potential for the development of Christian worship for today.

Abstract

For a long time, classical and evidential apologetics have been firmly established as a way of defending the Christian faith. However, postmodernism appears to criticize the use of absolute verification tools for faith claims. Nevertheless, James K.A. Smith and Alister McGrath see postmodernism as friend rather than foe, opportunity rather than challenge. Therefore, paying attention to important criticisms of the spirit of postmodernism will actually help the church to answer the demands of postmodernism itself. This article proposes an imaginative apologetics approach as a solution to answer this criticism. In contrast to classical/evidential apologetics, this apologetics tends to use imagination more than before in efforts to account for the Christian faith. When apologetics accepts dry accusations and seems to override existential aspects that actually dwell in humans, imaginative apologetics can be a proposed solution to avoid these accusations. Two implications emerge from this reasoning. First, in apologetic dialogues, an apologist must use more imaginative rhetorical tools. Second, the church must help listeners get an imaginative presentation of what it’s like to live as a Christian, by presenting them with stories of everyday Christian life. Thus, instead of the church using apologetics, the church is apologetics itself.

Abstract

In the last two or three decades, we have witnessed a renewed interest in spirituality in Christian academic circles. More recently, we have also seen a growing number of publi­cations on the mission and missional church—both on popular and academic levels. While one can easily find many quality works on Christian spirituality and some decent books on mission/missional church, one would only find a few works that combine both themes in a single volume. In this work, Charles Fen­sham, professor of theology at Knox College, Toronto, attempts to do just that—as one may discern from the book’s subtitle: A Missional Spirituality. As such, this book ad­dress­es those who have interest in spirituality and/or in mission but particularly to those who would like to see how biblical missional impetus shapes a particular understanding of Christian spirituality.

Abstract

The Relevance of Émile Durkheim's Thoughts for Protestant Churches Revitalization Today. This paper will provide some efforts to revitalize Protestant churches today, by analyzing the critical thinking of Émile Durkheim. Durkheim's observations and critiques of Protestantism in his day will be compared to the issues faced by the Protestant church today: the individualistic lifestyle of the congregation, lack of solidarity, individual cults, lack of respect for the sacred liturgy, and church worship including holy communion, and no clear church rules. Furthermore, this paper also offers a systematic-constructive synthesis to revitalize the church, including reconfirmation of symbols, reclarification of the sacred and nonsacred, and also reformation involving new clans in the church.
