Abstract

From Theodicy and Anthropodicy to Theo-anthropodicy: Loving God and Loving Others Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic. Suffering is an inevitable reality. This time, the world is dealing with a COVID-19 pandemic that causes suffering in several aspects of human life such as health, social, economic, psychological, and religion. This polemic leads us to a discussion around theodicy. Theodicy is a paradigm Leibniz used to defend God's benevolence and omnipotence in front of the reality of suffering, but the theories tend to stop in the realm of theory without practice. Sontag carries the paradigm of anthropodicy in the form of social solidarity that promotes the practice of criticizing the overly abstract theodicy in defense of God regardless of human suffering. Anthropodicy seems to be too socialist and tends to hold on to human abilities, thus excluding the religious aspect in social solidarity. Levinas responded to this anxiety by carrying an ethical theodicy. The ethical theodicy paradigm is used by Levinas to demonstrate God's presence through humans who took responsibility for alleviating the suffering of his neighbor. This article proposes a new name, meaning, and development of ethical theodicy, namely theo-anthropodicy. Theo-anthropodicy is a paradigm that embraces both theodicy as well as anthropodicy. Theo-anthropodicy seeks to prove God's love neither with Leibniz-style defenses that merely theorize nor with Sontag-style social solidarity that merely promotes practices. Theo-anthropodicy correlates these theories and practices in the same way that faith (theodicy), without action (anthropodicy) is dead. Theo-anthropodicy is  based on the principles of "loving God with all your heart, soul and mind" and "loving others as yourself."

Abstract

Abstract

Circular Reasoning?: Answering the Problem of Circularity in the Doctrine of Internal Witness of the Holy Spirit. The doctrine of the internal testimony of the Holy Spirit was used by John Calvin to explain why Christians can believe in the Bible as the word of God. However, this doctrine is not free from problems especially related to the problem of circular reasoning, subjectivism, and is considered to ignore evidence and arguments. This paper tries to answer these problems by first discussing the nature and mechanism of the internal testimony of the Holy Spirit. Secondly, it attempts to answer these problems by using the concept of multilevel knowledge and acknowledging the existence of epistemic circularity. With the help of these concepts, the author will show that these problems can be answered well.

Abstract

Perhaps there is no better time to reflect on the new creation than now, amid the Covid-19 pandemic. All aspects of human life are being impacted by the pandemic, not to mention the danger of death that it generates. This critical situation brings out legitimate questions to the current state of the world (or creation): whether it is perishing, being abandoned by God, or whether God is punishing the world into destruction due to its abundance of sin. Attempting to answer those questions, the author will argue alongside Kuyper and Bavinck that God would never abandon nor destroy his creation. Even though corrupted by sin, God has no intention to destroy the creation; instead, he intends to restore it according to his original plan. God’s intention is not just to redeem the elect but to redeem the whole creation, and that complete redemption will find its fulfillment in the new creation. Such a reflection would encourage the Christian proclamation that God’s salvation extends to all creation.

Abstract

This research aims to find the effect of shepherd leadership and organizational trust on work motivation and school commitment. This study was directed at Ketapang Christian Schools (SKK), located in Jakarta and Cibubur (West Java). This research used a saturated sample technique, which means the entire population became sample. The total number of respondents is 100. The Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method was selected as a statistical analysis technique. The conclusion showed that shepherd leadership and trust in the school are essential factors that positively impacted teacher’s work motivation. Shepherd leadership and trust in the school also have a positive influence on the commitment to the school. Shepherd leadership has a supportive influence on trust in the school, and work motivation has a supportive impact on the commitment to the school. The finding is expected to provide input for the school in considering policies, especially those related to school organizational structures, to build up trust, work motivation, and teachers’ commitment to the school.

Abstract

Transhumanism is a cultural and philosophical movement that sees humans as having the right and morphological freedom to evolve towards a posthuman state by radically modifying and enhancing human nature and capacity using the latest technologies such as genetic engineering, robotics, artificial intelligence, and nanotechnology. The posthuman that transhumanism craves is the human condition impervious to degeneration, disease, and even death. The end goal is to live longer or even immortal to enjoy unlimited happiness. By observing the development of the transhumanist agenda, there are concerns from scholars in the interdisciplinary fields of science, technology, and theology that humanity will be transformed by technology or even become marginalized and extinct. This article aims to examine transhumanism from Christian anthropology, which includes three aspects: the origin and nature of man, the reality of human life, and solutions to human problems. The results of the study show that the promise of transhumanism regarding human evolution with morphological freedom and self-determination to strive for progress towards a posthuman state is unpromising to achieve because human nature, which has fallen into sin, tends to destroy or exchange good for evil. The agenda and optimism of transhumanism to completely remove degeneration, disease, and death from human life by using the latest technology is impossible to realize because all these realities are the impact of the fall of man into sin, which can only be overcome by divine means through redemptive work of Christ which carries out the transformation of soul and body holistically

Abstract

Trinity is a fundamental doctrine in the Christian faith. Though the word “trinity” never appears in the Bible, its truth is displayed throughout the entire writing of the Scripture. However, it does not mean that all people accept this truth. In the Indonesian context, whose major population is Islam, the idea of one God but three and three but one is very polytheistic. Muslims highly regard the concept of monotheism. Standing on this monotheistic truth, to them, the idea of Trinity is not just simply weird but must also be vigorously rejected. Observing the above two facts, the author sees the need for apologetic defense from those accusations. This article exerts to describes allegations concerning the theological and logical problems of the Trinity as well as providing adequate apologetic defense. This article aims to present an objective apologetic defense in the belief that the doctrine of Trinity is monotheistic (theological defense), and even though far surpassing the limited human reasoning, Trinity is not irrational (logical defense).

Abstract

Uncovering the Noble Character of Ruth out of Shadows: Applying Character Analysis in the Book of Ruth. This article is an effort to apply the character analysis in the book of Ruth that shows the excellence of Ruth and the response of the original readers. Character analysis was carried out using the method of Richard L. Pratt Jr., which includes the description of characterizations, characterization techniques, and characterization purposes, to investigate the characters of Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz as the three main characters in this book. These three characters are analyzed and compared to find the purpose of characterization and the reader’s response. Through this analysis, we can find that the author of the book of Ruth has a purpose to describe indirectly or subtly the noble character of Ruth in the shadows of her background as a Moabites and the other main characters, Naomi and Boaz. Through the reading of the book of Ruth, the first readers can evaluate their spirituality as God’s people because they find that there is a Moabite woman whose life is godlier than them. It also raises awareness that Israel’s God embraces all nations and that non-Israelites do not always negatively influence God’s people.
