Abstract

Designing a Praxis of Christian Education Based on Family of Believers from Generation to Generation. Facts in almost every branch of science, including practical theology in the field of Christian education, show that there is a gap between theory and practice as if the practice cannot be carried out according to its theory, even though theory serves as a foundation for building practice. Therefore, theory and practice must be integrated into a single unit called praxis. The praxis will be effective because it is clear in its purpose, essence, scope, and strategy. This is a crucial thing that needs to be done by Christian educators. However, designing a praxis is not an easy matter. In response to this, the author presents a praxis draft of Christian education built on theological and historical studies of the theology of covenant in the light of Christian education of faith-based families and is equipped with practical recommendations for the preservation of God's covenant from generation to generation. It is hoped that this praxis design will encourage every practitioner of Christian education to build personal praxis.

Abstract

Critical-Multifaceted Review Against Genocide Allegations of Ancient Conquest Account of the Promised Land. The purpose of this article is to deliver a critical-multifaceted review against the accusation that the Judeo-Christian God has commanded genocide to Israelites in the conquest of the Promised Land. Correspondingly, I try to reconsider what matters essentially in the accusation and dissect the accusation into three facets, included legal terminology, interpretive and moral-philosophical facets. By analyzing the criteria of genocide in international law, I argue that the ancient conquest account of the Promised Land in the Old Testament dissatisfies these criteria, thus the conquest was incorrectly classified as genocide. I also gather some examples of misinterpretation of the conquest account of the promised land. I agree that the figurative-hyperbolic language as a common literary feature in the ancient conquest account and the ideology of war viewed as the divine retribution in ancient near eastern worldview. Then, I take Joshua chapters 9-11 as a biblical case study to demonstrate historical-cultural gaps between the ancient near eastern context of the conquest account and our present context. In the last facet, I tersely argue that there is a more contextual approach based on theistic moral argument instead of the New Atheist accusation.

The Relationship Between Parental Attachment and Faith Support with Intrinsic Religiosity of Emerging Adults from Evangelical Churches in Bandung. This study aims to find answers to research questions, namely whether or not there is a relationship between parental attachment and faith support with intrinsic religiosity of emerging adults from evangelical churches in Bandung. The research method used is quantitative by distributing questionnaires to 226 youth aged 18-29 years and not married in 8 evangelical churches in Bandung. The results showed a significant relationship between youth-mother attachment with intrinsic religiosity of youth. Youth-father attachment was not found to be related to intrinsic religiosity, nor was parental support of faith.

Abstract

Celibacy or Marriage ?: Instructions for Making Decision Based on Expositional Study of 1 Corinthians 7. The inner struggle to decide whether to marry or be celibate is a struggle for some Christians, especially young people. Choosing one of these two options can be difficult with some complexity due to a lack of understanding of the Bible’s principles related to this issue. Some believers do not understand the biblical instructions that can help them in their struggle to be married or celibate. While this struggle continues, data shows that the quantity level of singleness is increasing globally in the world and in Indonesia itself. Whether to be married or celibate, the decision to determine between these two options, according to Paul, must be based on their gift.  This paper will explain the instructions that can be learned from Paul's advice in 1 Corinthians 7 to make decisions about the status of life, especially celibacy.

Abstract

Shaping the Form of Evangelicalism in Indonesia: A Preliminary Proposal. This article was written as a preliminary opinion to explore the "public face" of evangelicalism as a movement in Indonesia. Furthermore, this article will discuss who are the evangelicals in Indonesia, the theological characteristics of the evangelicals, and the form of evangelical's participation in Indonesia. The writer will argue that the modification from Bebbington's Quadrilateral, Larsen's Pentagram, can be theological characteristics from the evangelicals in Indonesia. As a consequence, this article will propose two ways of movements from evangelicalism in Indonesia, which are the inward and outward movements. The inward movement is the spirit of the evangelical church to reform itself, while the outward flow is the eagerness of the evangelical church to reform the social condition. Thus, these are initial observations for shaping evangelicalism in Indonesia.

Abstract

God versus Laplace’s Demon: A Proposal for Trinitarian, Covenantal and Scientific Special Divine Action Concept. In the last decade, the interaction between science and theology in the effort to develop the concept of divine action in the natural world has come to a conclusion to find a causal joint where transcendent and nonphysical Creator God can act in natural processes that occur in the world of creation. An academic movement whose credibility has been recognized in its efforts to find a causal joint in new ways that incorporate philosophical interpretations of contemporary science into theology is the Divine Action Project (DAP), which formulates a concept of divine action called NIODA (Noninterventionist Objective Divine Action). NIODA seeks to find a locus of special divine action that does not conflict with laws of nature in physical processes that can be interpreted as ontological indeterminism, such as quantum mechanics. This paper will examine the philosophical assumptions behind NIODA and show that this concept is scientifically acceptable but not theologically adequate because it is still bound by Laplace's assumption of the enlightenment's legacy which considers the universe to be causally closed to divine action. Therefore, in the last part, this paper will also propose several important points in the effort to develop a concept of special divine action that is both theologically and scientifically adequate, built on the basis of a trinitarian and covenantal biblical theology of creation.

Abstract

Answering John Hick's Incoherence Allegations Against Dual-Nature Concept in the Orthodox Doctrine of Incarnation. In his writings, John Hick states that Christianity must rethink the claim to the divinity of Jesus as God the Son Incarnate. In his view, the dual nature in Jesus cannot be understood with common sense because the two natures contradict each other. As a way out, Hick offers the concept of mythologization which states that Jesus' incarnation as God the Son is a myth. To answer that, in this paper, in addition to basing her argument on the biblical statement, the author uses a combined logic approach: relativity thesis, natural kind concept, and divine preconscious model. With the method of relativity thesis, the author can point out the logic errors of incoherent accusations from Hick to the doctrine of the orthodox incarnation. Meanwhile, the natural kind concept approach can prove the coherence of the dual-natures concept in God the Son as an incarnation of God. The Divine preconscious model can provide a logical basis for the unity of the Person of Jesus with the two natures within Him, which do not contradict each other. With the combination of the three approaches, this paper presents a strong argument to prove that the doctrine of the orthodox incarnation is coherent. Thus, Christianity does not need to re-articulate the doctrine of the orthodox incarnation and also does not interpret the doctrine as a myth.
