Abstract

Pancasila is a political compromise that allows Indonesia as a nation to continue to walk together in various religious beliefs (Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism, Protestantism, Catholicism, and others who believe in the One God). On the other hand, the teachings and practices of the evangelical church in Indonesia, especially those related to the basic doctrine of salvation and the practice of evangelism, are often considered contrary to the values of Pancasila. This study aims to show that the fundamental beliefs of the evangelical church do not conflict with the spirit of diversity in Pancasila. Our thesis is that the basic evangelical doctrines and practices are not in conflict with the inclusivism of Pancasila, because the history of the formation of Pancasila is largely influenced by neo-modernist Muslims who were likewise exclusivist in their theology. The approach taken in this study is to explore the historical roots of the evangelical movement in the world to Indonesia, which is then compared with the history of the birth of Pancasila, to demonstrate coherence between evangelical teachings and praxis to the values of Pancasila.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has become a major event that affects many aspects of life, including church life. The church needs to adapt itself to the changes that occur while responding to various situations around it. This situation brings two questions for the church to reflect on, namely whether the church has been paying attention to the concrete issues around it and whether the church has truly been present for others. This paper aims to show that the post-pandemic church needs to be a church that is faithfully present for others. For that, I will discuss the impact of the pandemic on the church. Then, I will explore Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s view of the church for others and James Davison Hunter’s ideas about faithful presence. Both of them are trying to show a church that wants to be present in the midst of society with various dynamics of life. Finally, I discuss these two views to construct an incarnational, relational, and missional post-pandemic ecclesiology.

Abstract

From the time of the Reformation until contemporary times, the epistle of James has been considered to have no significant contribution to Christian theology. When compared to Paul's letters, the letter of James is less desirable or even often considered inferior to be involved in theological discourse. In reality, it can be argued that James 3:13-18 provides constructive theological implications when read with a theological interpretation of Scripture approach. This article proposes an assessment with a theological interpretation approach to James 3:13-18 to see the Christological indication that Jesus Christ is the embodiment of God’s wisdom. Without neglecting the importance of the praxis of wisdom, this interpretation theologically testifies that the gentle, from above, pure, reconciling, gracious, obedient, merciful and so on wisdom that James refers to has been realized in and through the person of Jesus Christ. The church as a community of believers who read James 3:13-18 needs to realize its calling to become a community of wise people with the power of the Holy Spirit to imitate the life of Jesus who is the embodiment of God's wisdom.

Abstract

Gerhard von Rad’s exegesis on Genesis 22 shows that the test of Abraham or the Aqedah contains a problem of the endangered promise. Isaac was seen as the promised child, the proto-Israel. Hence, there is a dilemma of the endangered people of God if Isaac is sacrificed. So too the church, along with the entire history of salvation, would not exist. Abraham’s experience can serve as a blueprint of how God deals with his church, the Israel of God. It is normal then to ask the follow-ing: How does God deal with his church? Can the church continue to thrive in this post-pandemic era? This paper aims to provide some answers by showing, first of all, that Genesis 22 is a culmination test from the initial calling to Abraham in Genesis 12. This command and the related verbs are then examined in the context of Abraham’s calling from Genesis 12 until the test in Genesis 22. Finally, some spiritual implications and insights are drawn to encourage post-pandemic churches as they journey on with the Lord. As the world grapples with the profound impact of the global health crisis, it is argued that Genesis 22 is not just a problem of an endangered promise, but rather a complex relationship Abraham has between a divine promise that is also entangled with and should be understood in relation to, a divine command, a doubtful and responding faith, and an act of obedience and disobedience. In short, faith indeed is a pilgrimage.

Abstract

A good life is a picture of the ideal life that drives all our decisions and habits. Based on various research results from home and abroad, the author shows that Generation Z Indonesia has the following image of a good life: a life full of entertainment, a consumptive lifestyle, and financial stability. The author proposes the concept of theopolitan worship as a means of calibrating the good life of generation Z Indonesia through the local church. First of all, the author constructs the concept of theopolitan worship by bringing together Peter J. Leithart’s thoughts on theopolitan vision, reading, and liturgy. Theopolitan worship is a worship liturgy based on biblical narratives that redeem culture and move the church to play an active role in this world. Next, the author provides some support from neurological studies related to worship that triggers several neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. Finally, the author explains the impact of the Word on entertainment and the impact of Holy Communion on the consumerism and financial stability of generation Z Indonesia.

Abstract

The teaching or doctrine related to Christian eschatology is often considered unimportant or at least less important for various reasons: it is located in the last part of systematic theology, speculative, irrelevant, and often causes polemics in its interpretation. These reasons have led to the lack or even neglect of eschatology being taught and lived out in the liturgy and the life of the church. Therefore, through a literature study, the authors propose how the church today can recover its identity as an eschatological community as envisioned in the Scriptures. In particular, the author shows how the church can see and execute the proclamation of the Word and administer the sacrament of Holy Communion or the Eucharist eschatologically. The authors’ conviction is that an eschatological perspective and praxis in the church is an appropriate and healthy way to rebuild the spirituality of believers today.

Abstract

This article is an intertextual reading of three models of Christian presence from three texts, namely The Epistle to Diognetus, an extra-canonical text of the second century; the text To Change the World by James Davison Hunter, an American sociologist; and the views of Eka Darmaputera, an Indonesian theologian. The findings of the three texts are analyzed using Alasdair MacIntyre’s concept of virtue, which rejuvenates Aristotle’s idea of virtue ethics. Through intertextual analysis of these three texts, the findings related to Christian presence are used to construct a model of virtue-based Christian presence. This virtue-based model of Christian presence is used as the basis for building an image of the three-duties model of the church, namely koinonia, diakonia, and marturia. This effort aims to answer the struggle of balancing the model of church presence between internal and external factors.
