Abstract

Since there have been a big difference between wood production and industrial need, wood diversification plays an important role in handling wood deficiencies. Wood raw material diversification could developed and increased throughout the use of whole parts of the tree including branch. The current study was aimed at understanding stem and branch physical properties (basic density, air-dry specific gravity, air-dry moisture content and shrinkage) of macadamia wood as quality indicators for efficient utilization in the future. For the purpose of the study, parts of stem and branch of the tree were taken from a macadamia tree. Test specimens of stem were cut 50 cm from the ground while that of branch were selected from the largest diameter at 10 cm distance from the main stem of the tree. All samples were tested for their physical properties according to ISO standards, 1975. Results showed that the basic density, air dry specific gravity and longitudinal shrinkage of the branchwood of macadamia were higher than those of the stem. The air-dry moisture content, radial and tangential shrinkage were low on the branchwood. Keywords : Wood Physical Properties, Branchwood , Macadamia Wood

Abstract

The application of nail connection for part of the structural construction in Indonesia is still become the main choice. Connection type that must be counted on seriously for structural construction, are tension, shear and momen connection. Nangka wood is a type of woods that available in sawing or community woods work around Bogor. Rasamala is endemic and unique woods from West Java. Nails as connection are cheap, available and workable. This research objective is to investigate the effect of diameter and amount of nails to double shear connection strength on two type of woods. The results showed that the increase of diameter and amount of nail will rise the capacity of total allowable load per shear plane (RT) or double shear connection strength of nangka woods and rasamala-steel plate, but this phenomena is different for allowable load capacity per nail per shear plane (R) for both of that type. Design value for nangka wood based on diameter size 4,1; 5,2 and 5,5 mm are 261; 358 and 365 kg respectively, and for rasamala wood the design value is sligthly low, which is 227; 311 and 321 kg respectively. The minimum value becomes fundamental for determining design value of total allowable load per shear plane connection (RT) based on amount of nail (4-10), which is determined by multiply the value of certain type woods with amount of nails used. Key words: double shear, displacement, allowable load per nail per shear plane (R), total allowable load per shear plane (RT)

Abstract

The management of a protection forest often faces a dilemma between the importance of conservation and the importance of the needs of the local people in the area. Managing the area will on’t be so effective and disturbed if there is only minimal participation and insufficient support in interaction from the local people. Various factors of heterogeneous people will influence the form of interaction that occurs between the people and the area. The aim of this study is to know and measure the participation of the local people in managing the protection forest and to analyse the characteristics (both individual and organizational) that influence the level of participation collectively in preserving the protected forest area. This research is designed as a survey research having the character of a descriptive co-relationship between the variable dependent i.e. Community participation and the variable of individual and organizational characters as a heterogeneous factor in protection forest area. This research population is the active community who manage the land (dusung) around the protection forest area in Gunung Nona (HLGN) in Ambon. Data analyses used tests the technical Chi square and its participation level test the co-efficient of the contingency. Results show that the characteristics (both individual and organizational) that have a close connection and influenced the level of participation in preserving the HLGN area are their knowledge about the protection forest, the scope of the authority of dusung land, the status of ownership of the dusung, the period of involvement in the organization and the relationship between the organizer and the public members in the organization. People’s participation in managing the HLGN is based on the perceived benefits and how they manage the dusung depends on their own character or morale. Key words: Participation, Heterogeneous, Dusung.

Abstract

One of the many problems of pine wood as furniture raw material is bluestain attack. The purpose of this research was to improve the quality appearance of pine wood by using oil and heat treatments. Materials used in this study consist of four attack levels of pine wood, namely heavy, moderate, mild and no attack. Oil heat treatment condition was 200ºC for 1 and 2 hours, while heat treatment condition was 170ºC, 185ºC and 200ºC for 1 and 2 hours. Eight treatments had been applied for this research with three replicas. The result of this study indicates that pine wood for any treatment using oil heat treatment is darker compared to control, so the bluestain is less apparent. Meanwhile, heat treatment has no effect to improve the quality appearance. Key words: Pinus merkusii, bluestain, quality enhancement, oil heat treatment, heat treatment
