Abstract

Background: The necessity to always use a mask in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to a new term called maskne. Maskne is the appearance of acne that is triggered by wearing a mask. It usually occurs specifically in the area covered by the mask, focused on the cheeks, chin, and nose. Objective: This study aims to determine the risk factors associated with the occurrence of maskne. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on the Faculty of Medicine students, Universitas Sumatera Utara class 2018. This study uses primary data from questionnaires and observation of respondents' face photos. Results: Based on statistical analysis, 99 out of 221 respondents (44.8%) experienced maskne. Bivariate analysis shows p-values <0.05 for gender, duration of mask use, and previous acne history. On the other hand, it was obtained p-value >0.05 for the type of mask and mask changing habit. Conclusion: Based on multivariate analysis, the p-value <0.05 for gender indicates that gender is the most dominant risk factor in the incidence of maskne. Furthermore, there is a significant association between gender and the occurrence of maskne. Females are twice as likely to experience maskne.

Abstract

Background: More than one and a half million of whole world population are infected by Soil Transmitted Helminths. The most common types of Soil Transmitted Helminths found in human are Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and Hookworm (Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale). Soil Transmitted Helminths infections are usually found on individuals with poor hygiene, low socioeconomic status, and high risk occupations, such as sheep farmer. Sheep farming in Indonesia is generally a small-scale farm with modest technology. Livestock herding on the pasture may cause the livestock to consume Soil Transmitted Helminths-contaminated grass. Soil is the medium for the maturing of Soil Transmitted Helminths fertilized egg into infective form. Modest handling aspect and poor sanitation allow Soil Transmitted Helminths to be found in farm soil. Objective: To identify Soil Transmitted Helminths in the soil of a sheep farm in Manggis Village, Serbajadi District, Serdang Bedagai Regency. Methods: This observational descriptive study was conducted with cross-sectional approach. 100 of soil samples were collected per 8 square meters through quota sampling from a sheep farm in Manggis Village, Serbajadi District, Serdang Bedagai Regency. The data was collected by carrying out flotation technique in laboratory.. Results: Soil Transmitted Helminths eggs were discovered in 17 (17%) out of 100 samples, Hookworm eggs in 14 samples (14%), and Ascaris lumbricoides eggs in 5 (5%) samples. Conclusion: There are Soil Transmitted Helminths in soil of the sheep farm in in Manggis Village, Serbajadi District, Serdang Bedagai Regency.

Abstract

Background: Osteosarcoma remains a challenging disease, especially for young patients, due to its tendency to spread to the lungs and resist treatment. Identifying reliable markers at diagnosis could help doctors start more effective treatment earlier and improve patient outcomes. Two blood markers, ALP and LDH, may offer insight into a patient’s prognosis. Objective: This study explored whether pre-surgery levels of ALP and LDH could predict survival in osteosarcoma patients. Methods: Researchers reviewed medical records of patients diagnosed with osteosarcoma at RSUP Haji Adam Malik Medan from 2015 to 2017. This retrospective study included those who met the necessary criteria and had complete data. Results: The study found no strong evidence linking ALP or LDH levels to five-year survival. ALP had a very weak negative correlation with survival (r = -0.019), while LDH showed a weak positive correlation (r = 0.093). Median ALP was 212 U/L; LDH was 489 U/L. Sensitivity and specificity were moderate for both markers. Conclusion: There is no significant relationship between ALP and LDH with five-year survival.

Abstract

Background: Immune biologic markers that can predict clinical response to anti-PD-1/PD-L1 therapy are needed to identify and validate tumor immunotherapy studies. High PD-L1 expression is associated with increased clinical response in patients with various types of cancer treated with inhibitors of the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway. Objective: The researcher wanted to see the clinicopathological characteristics of invasive breast carcinoma according to the immunohistochemical expression of PD-L1. Methods: This study is a descriptive study with a cross-sectional, retrospective approach by looking at secondary data from the medical records of the Department of Surgery, Haji Adam Malik Hospital from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2021. Results: Immunohistochemical expression of PD- L1 was positive in 76.6% of invasive breast carcinomas and negative in 23.3% of invasive breast carcinomas. Immunohistochemical expression of PD-L1 was positive in non-specific IBCs that predominated in every molecular subgroup of breast carcinoma. Conclusion: Tumours can show positive or negative PD-L1 expression through several biological processes with different functional significance, namely the genetic mechanism of constitutive or oncogene-induced PD-L1 expression, PD-L1 expression induced in T cells, and absence of PD-L1 expression. Due to the absence of T cells and genetic events that block the expression of PD-L1 despite T cell infiltration.

Abstract

Background: The pituitary gland is the master gland regulating body hormones. From the anterior pituitary’s corticotrophs, adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) is secreted and influences corticosterone production in rodents via the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis. ACTH and corticosterone are commonly used as hormonal stress markers. Disturbances in ACTH and corticosterone are seen in diseases like Addison’s disease, Cushing’s syndrome, and metabolic syndrome. Objective: To observe which diet induces the most and least stress on Sprague Dawley rats’ physiology. Methods: Thirty-five Sprague Dawley rats were divided into five groups (n=7) and given different diets (control, high-fat, high-protein, high-sugar, and high-starch) with tap water ad libitum. After eight weeks, blood samples were collected and serum separated. ACTH and corticosterone were extracted, purified, identified, and quantified using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with photodiode array (PDA) analysis. Results: High-sugar diet led to the highest ACTH blood level. Both high-fat and high-sugar diets showed the highest corticosterone peaks. Conclusion: Consumption of high-fat and high-sugar diets for eight weeks is suggested to induce physiological and metabolic stress in Sprague Dawley rats, as evidenced by HPA axis activation.
