Abstract

Dee Lestari's short story Filosofi Kopi (The Philosophy of Coffee) not only tells the story of Ben and Jody's journey in building a coffee shop, but also delves into the existential meaning and absurdity of life. This study explores the absurdity of the philosophical journey through an existentialist approach in Filosofi Kopi. Coffee in this story is positioned as a symbol of Ben and Jody's struggle to face the duality of idealism and pragmatism, specifically Ben's obsession with coffee perfection and Jody's pragmatic view, oriented toward profit. The analysis reveals that the absurdity of perfection, shaken by the presence of Twix coffee, prompts both characters to engage in a profound reflection on the meaning and purpose of life. Ben realizes that perfection lies not only in complexity but also in authenticity and the ability to touch the soul. Meanwhile, Jody begins to appreciate the profound philosophy embedded in coffee. Within the existentialist framework, Coffee Philosophy offers the perspective that humans can find harmony by accepting the absurdity of life and creating personal meaning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between interpersonal communication and narrative writing motivation among DPKU IPB class of 61 students. The research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, involving 100 students as respondents. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire, which had been tested for validity and reliability. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test indicated that the data were normally distributed (p 0.05), allowing the use of the Pearson Product-Moment correlation for analysis. The results show a positive and significant relationship between interpersonal communication and narrative writing motivation, with a correlation coefficient (r) = 0.429 and a significance level (p 0.001). This correlation falls within the moderate category based on Cohen's guidelines. This finding implies that better interpersonal communication is associated with higher motivation for narrative writing. Based on these findings, it is recommended that students enhance their interpersonal communication skills through activities supporting social interaction. Educators are encouraged to create a communicative and supportive learning environment to foster students' writing motivation. Future research is suggested to explore other variables, such as social support or personal interest, that may also influence narrative writing motivation.

Abstract

COVID-19 has led to BIPA learning being conducted online via the Zoom platform. To prevent BIPA learners still in their respective countries from becoming bored with their lessons, providing song material is necessary. The purpose of this study is to describe the implementation of BIPA learning through music media, students' assessment of the impact of songs in BIPA learning, and students' brief statements about the song material. This research is a descriptive qualitative study involving questionnaires given to 12 BIPA KNB IPB 2021/2022 students. The results indicate that students agree to include song material in BIPA levels 2 and 3, with various genres at least once a week, to boost motivation, reduce tension, and make learning more enjoyable. Songs can help train listening and pronunciation skills, improve mastery of vocabulary, grammar, and word meanings, and provide insight into Indonesian culture. The recommended number of songs is two per meeting. The implication of this research is that song material can be integrated into BIPA lessons, but no more than two songs should be used.

Abstract

The lyrics of a song are not just a collection of beautiful words; they also serve as a form of communication that can carry pragmatic meanings, including speech acts that encourage. This research aims to identify and analyze illocutionary acts with encouraging functions in the lyrics of the movie The Greatest Showman. The encouraging function is understood as a type of utterance that offers support, enthusiasm, and motivation to the interlocutor or listener. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, using the speech act theory from Searle (1970) and Searle Vanderveken (1985) as the basis for classification. The classification includes five types of speech acts: assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. The data consist of lyrics collected from nine songs in the film, analyzed in the context of speech events, propositional content, and the effects of the utterances. The results indicate that the encouraging function in the song lyrics can manifest through various types of speech acts, not only in the form of explicit invitations but also through personal statements, commitments, and emotional expressions. Thus, the song lyrics in this movie serve not only as entertainment but also as a practical and pragmatic motivational tool.

Abstract

This study analyzes the history and sociocultural background that gave rise to the mystification of Bogor (Buitenzorg) as a city without worry, and then demystifies and deconstructs it. This research aims to deconstruct the mystification of Bogor as a city without fear by examining the history of collective action that led to resistance in the Bogor area. This study also describes the sociological factors and changes in natural conditions that have changed from the colonial period to the present day. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach and draws on deconstruction theory to reconstruct the history that shapes the identity of the Bogoran. The results of this study show that Bogor, which is famous for being a city without worry, is a result of colonial power conditions. That inherent and maintained identity is the result of knowledge imposed by power. The deconstruction carried out in this study ultimately led to the dismantling of meaning, revealing that Bogor had a more complex history than just being a resting place. There is also a stage for various forms of collective action of resistance from the colonial era, independence, to post-independence.
