Journal Albion Journal of English Literature, Language, and Culture. Journal Albion : Journal of English Literature, Language and Culture is published twice a year in April and October by The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Pakuan University. It has been published biannually since January 2019. Any submitted paper will be reviewed by reviewers. The review process employs a double-blind review that the reviewer does not know the identity of the author, and the author does not know the identity of the reviewers.

Abstract

The topic of this research is the depression experienced by the main character in the Jasmine Wargas My Heart and Other Black Holes with the formulation problem on how the form of depression in the main character is and the efforts made by the main character to overcome the depression that she is going through. This research uses the descriptive analysis method with data analysis techniques in the form of a literature study using the perspective of literary psychology and a psychological review of depression and intrinsic elements such as character and characterization, plot, conflict, and settings. The results of this study are that the main character experiences a major depression with various physical, psychological, social symptoms, emotional and motivational symptoms, and some triggering factors that are psychological factors with several self-defense mechanisms and the main character's efforts in overcoming her depression.Keywords: Depression; Main Character; Self-defense Mechanism; Overcome Depression.

Abstract

 Abstract This thesis is titled "An Analysis on Adjective Clause in Daniel Defoes Robinson Crusoe." This study aims to show the dominant function and type of adjective clause. In addition, this research is also conducted to show the fragmentary differences between Early Modern English and Modern English. The researcher used the adjective clause theory of Oshima and Hogue which included 6 functions and 2 types of adjective clause. The method used in this study is library qualitative or in other words library research.From this study, it can be concluded that 94 clauses data with functions and types of adjective clause were found and the dominant function of the adjective clause was relative pronoun as object 35 data equivalent to 37.23%. The difference in fragment between Early Modern English and Modern English is occured in the use of suffix st, -est, and t, the use of do auxiliaries, the use of pronoun thou, the use of the word will vs shall and the use of demonstrative pronoun.Keywords : adjective clause, functions and types of adjective clause.

Abstract

The occurrence of language variation is not only caused by homogeneous speakers but also because of diverse social interactions. This diversity will increase if the language is used by many speakers, because guidelines for social interaction is needed. This research discusses components of speech event, domain and the use of language variations of the main character in the movie Black Panther (2018). The purpose of this research is to identify the language variations used by the main character, and to show that the components of speech event which support the choice of the language variations. Using the descriptive analysis, and the proficient free listening techniques, the research yields to identify speech variations according to Martin Joss. The most frequently used of language variations by the main character is the casual style. The most scarcely language variations used are the intimate style and the consultative style. It can be proven that the component of speech event and domain strongly supports the use of the language variations.Keywords: components of events; domain; language variations; main character.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study aims at denoting  the image of female masculinity through the study of the main character in the novel The Spy by Paulo Coelho. The main character, Mata Hari,  works as a dancer and hetaira, but is accused of spying because of her profession. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with library research technique. The results of this study indicate that female masculinity described in the main character is considered hegemonic masculinity, that is, the kind of  masculinity formed through behavior, personal experience, and cultural processes. This masculinity is denoted in the presence of the main characters characteristics, such as  self-nature, adventurous, free, selfish, reckless, active, and courageous.Keyword : Female masculinity, Hetaira, Masculinity-femininity.

Abstract

This research investigates how community ideology relates to cultural expressions and the religious experiences of its members. Maiyah Jamparing Asih is a religious study community with unique practices. The study focuses on how the formation of community ideology ultimately influences and is reflected in the cultural expressions of the Maiyah Jamparing Asih community. This research adopts a qualitative approach using ethnography. Participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis are the methods employed to collect data. Members of the Maiyah Jamparing Asih community, along with community elders, are the research respondents. The results reveal that the community ideology of Maiyah Jamparing Asih emphasizes spiritual values, unity, and social harmony. The strongly understand religious teachings and strives to incorporate them into daily life. In Maiyah Jamparing Asih, cultural expressions are reflected in various aspects of action, such as performance arts, music, contemporary and traditional poetry and religious rituals and expressions. These expressions also illustrate how community ideology shapes their cultural practices and meanings. This research provides a better understanding of how community ideology relates to cultural expressions in the context of religiosity.Keywords: Ideology, Maiyah, Religion,  Culture.

Abstract

This study is aimed to identify the kinds of presupposition and the triggers used by the characters in the movie Gifted. It is also aimed to interpret the implicit meaning in them and to describe the common ground between the speakers and the listeners. This study is a qualitative research using descriptive analysis method. The data are collected by using uninvolved observation and note-taking technique. The analysis result shows that there are 54 data of presupposition usages and common ground. According to the analysis, presupposition and common ground commonly appear more in daily communication caused by the triggers of implicit assumption, the close relationship between the speakers and the listeners, and the community they are attending.Keywords: common ground; presupposition;character.

Abstract

The topic of this research is related to the character change experienced by the main character in the novel Assassins Creed: Forsaken by Oliver Bowden. This research uses the descriptive analysis research method with the literature study technique which produces findings in the form of intrinsic elements such as characterization, plot, conflict, and setting. Extrinsic elements, namely psychological theories, through the perspective of psychoanalysis, are used to find out the factors that cause the character changes to occur in the main character. Other findings in this research also include character change caused by an event and interaction with other individuals.Keywords: Changes of Character; Main Character; Change Factor.

Abstract

This research is an analysis on the violation of cooperative principles in the movie  Avengers that also describes the type of violation of cooperative principle contained in every conversation in the movie.  The research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research is the conversation that occurs in the movie Avengers, whilst the object of this research is the data containing forms of every conversation violations of the cooperative principle in the movie Avengers. The technique used in collecting data is called note technique. The data obtained is classified based on the form of violation of cooperative principles. The result of the research shows that the form of violation of the cooperative principle that occurs in the Avengers movie consists of four maxims: the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality, the maxim of relevance, and the maxim of manner. The violation on the maxim of cooperation occurs because of the same knowledge held by the speech participants and the speech partners in discussing a problem, clarifying information, and changing the subject.Keywords: Violations of cooperative principles, maxim, movie, avengers.

Abstract

Polygamy in the context of  Indonesian society is frequently seen as an issue that is related to  pro and contra attitudes shown by women in terms of how they respond to such marriage system. The issue of polygamy raised in this article is focusing on the discourse of polygamy built in this film, Berbagi Suami (Love for Share) (2006), through the study of the female central characters that experienced polygamous marriages. The aim is to reveal the discourse of polygamy in this film through Hall's constructionist approach and Foucault's discourse concept using descriptive analysis methods and semiology. The results of the analysis show that the discourse of polygamy in the Indonesian context is described as a matter of pros and cons that comes from women’s responses to polygamous marriages. Despite the pros and cons, polygamous marriage is still seen as a complex marriage system that is detrimental to women.  Women are represented as victims that are shown by the impacts obtained from polygamous marriages such as economic hardship, not getting the justice they deserve, physical abuse, exhausting physiological and physiological conditions, and social labeling.

Abstract

The research "Correlation between The Elements of Racism with Spades Card Game in the Poem by Terrance Hayes We Should Make a Documentary about Spades” " aims to find the correlation between the Spades game and the problem of racism in the studied poetry. This research uses descriptive methods and qualitative approaches to find correlations that have been mentioned previously. This study shows in several lines, the problem of racism experienced by the black race is described by the Spades card game. This study shows that the use of the Spades card game in the poetry is closely related to slavery during colonialism and the problem of discrimination against the black race during The Great Depression. The connection between the racial issues in these two periods with the Spades card game is in the connotation of the word Spades itself which is related to slavery that occurred during the colonial period and the Spades card game which is exclusive to the black race.Keywords: Spades; Racism; Correlation; Discrimination
