Journal Albion Journal of English Literature, Language, and Culture. Journal Albion : Journal of English Literature, Language and Culture with registered number e-ISSN 2657-0696 invites submission of studies co-authored by faculty, students, and or community partners in the areas of English literature, linguistic, and culture. Journal Albion: Journal of English Literature, Language and Culture accepts articles in any literary related subjects and any research methodology that meet the standards established for publication in the journal The articles must be written in English. Journal Albion : Journal of English Literature, Language and Culture is published twice a year in April and October by The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Pakuan University. It has been published biannually since January 2019. Any submitted paper will be reviewed by reviewers. The review process employs a double-blind review that the reviewer does not know the identity of the author, and the author does not know the identity of the reviewers.

Abstract

AbstractThis study aims at denoting the features of female speech and its functions that Michelle Obama applied in the Talk Show United States of Women Summit. In addition, the purpose of this study is to also denote the features of male speech, so as to see which feature is the most dominant in use. The study results in the finding of 18 data of women's utterances. There are 7 types of speech features consisting of 2 data adjectives, 1 datum of tag question, 2 data of raising intonations on declaratives, 1 datum of avoidance of strong swear words, 6 data of emphatic stress, 2 data of lexical hedges and 3 data of intensifiers. The female speech features in the analysis serve as hedges device and booster device. The present writer also sees that Michelle uses two types of male speech features in 4 data, they are 3 pieces of minimal responses and 1 command and directive. Therefore, it can be said that the use of female speech features in this research are more dominant than male's.Keywords: mens speech features, womens speech features, functions of womens speech features.

Abstract

This article is interested in studying the utterances used by a teacher in a virtual  classroom. The study is conducted in Kindergarten 2 class, James Education Centre located in Bogor. The method applied is descriptive qualitative, using recordings and note taking as a technique to attain data.  Looking into the illocutionary act, which is the meaning of utterances proposed by Searle, the data reveals that  69% of the teacher utterances are directives, 18% assertives and 12% expressives. The meaning of directive speech act is commiting interlocuters to do something. Assertives are used as  statements and reports, while expressives as compliments and expressing gratitude. Keywords: utterance; speech act; illocutionaryact; directives.

Abstract

This study analyses the perlocutionary effect of the central characters utterances that signifies gender-based discrimination in Anne with an E series season one (2017). This study uses descriptive-qualitative method. By using Austin and Searles theory on Speech Act and a feminist perspective, the perlocutionary act is analysed through the analysis of type, form and function of utterances. The results of the study indicate that there is resistance and disapproval of gender discrimination. From the central characters utterances, 3 forms of gender discrimination were identified, namely marginalization, stereotype and subordination.Keywords:perlocutionary act ;speech act; Anne with an E series; gender discrimination.

Abstract

The main topic in this research is changes in the main character as a person with Asperger's syndrome in Kathryn Erskines Mockingbird. The process of this research involves the whole story, intrinsic elements: character and characterization, conflict, and setting. This qualitative research is supported by descriptive analysis method and library research technique that shows the main character as a person with Asperger's syndrome can experience character changes even though the research states that person with this syndrome is quite difficult to progress in terms of social interaction. A person with asperger syndrome has a persistent nature, but gradually the main character is able to pass through all the processes of change in her life. Abstract

This research is entitled “Connotative Meaning in Song Lyrics on Ariana Grande’s Album”. The purpose of this research is to identify the connotative meaning in the song lyrics on several Ariana Grande’s album, to classify the types of connotations, and to explain the connotative meaning. This research uses descriptive method. In collecting data, the writer focuses on words, phrases, and clauses that have connotative meanings and classifies them based on Olikova’s theory in Stylistic and Social Cognition (2007) which classifies connotative meanings into positive and negative meanings. The result of this research is that there are thirty words, twenty phrases, and three clauses that contain connotative meanings in the song lyrics, and the connotative meanings have variations in their descriptions.

Abstract

The film is known as the audio-visual means of communication. Moreover, it encompasses so many genres, especially horse horror films film has been well-known in the context of Indonesias film production. Horror films have a tight bond with the Indonesian audience since most people believe in mystical and supernatural occurrences. The existence of the religious leader becomes important to drive out the ghosts from hauntings. Maximum by Riza Pahlevi is one horror film that portrays the coming of the Islamic religious leader as the problem solver over the haunting problems in the movie. The purpose of this research is to analyze the representation of the Islamic religious leader in the film Makmum by Riza Pahlevi. The research made use of a qualitative approach and took the denotative and connotative semiotics concept by Roland Barthes. The data collection technique was conducted through document analysis. The research result presented that the images of the Islamic religious leader comprise having a deep Islamic religious knowledge, becoming loyal to the teachings, and becoming righteous according to religious beliefs shown through varied scenes in the movie.Keywords: Horror Films; Representation; Semiotics; The Islamic Religious Leader.

Abstract

Abstract This research, is an analysis on the main characters struggle to obtain her freedom based on The Underground Railroad, a novel by Colson Whitehead. The purpose of this research aims at the displaying modes of oppressions that the main character has to undergo as a dark-skinned slave secretly trying to find  ways to escape. The data are analyzed with qualitative descriptive analysis method involving the intrinsic aspects and the theory of forms of oppression by Iris Young. In support of this study, library research technique is used for additional sources. The research results in the identification that the main character has to undergo fivefaces of oppression: exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialsm, and violence. Eventually, it turns out that both internal and external factors have brought her a success in escaping from slavery and in winning her freedom. Keywords : black-skinned, freedom, oppression, slavery

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to identify the types and strategies in translating idioms used in Paula Hawkins' novel The Girl on the Train. The research methodology applied isdescriptive qualitative.The results show that the types of idioms (ODell and McCarthy 2010)found in the novel are similes, binomials, proverbs, euphemisms, cliché, and fixed statement and other language. Using the theory by Baker (2011), the idioms in the novel are mainly translated using the strategy; translation by phrase. Other strategies that are also applied are using idioms of similar meanings but dissimilar forms, using idioms of singular and form, translating by omission of entire idioms, and borrowing the source language. Keywords: Idioms; Translation Strategy.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The topic of this research is the influence of power relations which gave rise to injustice against the female character in Philippa Gregorys The Red Queen. In a relationship, whether between individuals or groups, there is usually a figure who has more control than others. In this sphere, Foucault calls this kind of relationship power relations”. Power relation is something that can be said to be commonplace, but this is detrimental to one party, especially to women. Therefore, this study aims to show the harm suffered by women due to the influence of power relations by centralizing the analysis on Lady Margaret Beaufort, the main character of a noble woman in the context of the 14th and 15th centuries in England. The type of research used is qualitative research that is supported by library technique. The research findings shows that power relations in the 14th and 15th centuries are very strong in the life of the royal community, and it gives birth of injustice to the main character such as: (1)Steriotype, (2)Subordination, (3)Symbolic violence and, (4)Marginalization. Abstract

Sexual harassment has been rampantly happening in universities in Indonesia and has become the focus of the government, higher education institutions, and most people in Indonesia to tackle the problem. In actual practice, the victims of this violence do not speak up since they have experienced the epistemic violence over the threats given by the perpetrators. This research dismantles the news construction on Syafri Harto’s sexual violence case in Riau University, Indonesia. The data sources were six news headlines derived from three online news sites, such as cnnindonesia.com, kompas.com, and news.detik.com. The collected data taken were six news titles on Syafri Harto’s sexual harassment case within the university. Moreover, the data analysis took Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Norman Fairclough. The research finding shows that the headlines take diverse syntactical functions and dictions, the sites have different characteristics in producing the news, and the sexual harassment case is seriously discussed as a collective concern.
