Journal Albion Journal of English Literature, Language, and Culture. Journal Albion: Journal of English Literature, Language and Culture accepts articles in any literary related subjects and any research methodology that meet the standards established for publication in the journal The articles must be written in English. Journal Albion : Journal of English Literature, Language and Culture is published twice a year in April and October by The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Pakuan University. It has been published biannually since January 2019. Any submitted paper will be reviewed by reviewers. The review process employs a double-blind review that the reviewer does not know the identity of the author, and the author does not know the identity of the reviewers.

Abstract

Film has been the means of communication. In addition, it has been recognized to be mediated quasi-interaction which shows a monological manner in term of the communication between the contents and the audience. It also can portray the representation of a certain culture in a particular country, specifically Indonesia. In addition to the local culture, Sundanese is the second ethnic majority that mostly dwell in the province of West Java. What is more, the ethnicity still shows rare portrayals on film since there are not many movies that incorporate the Sundanese culture into their stories. Rocker Balik Kampung (2018) by Uli Rahman is one of the films that integrates Sundanese culture to be the big theme. It focuses on a Sundanese rocker who has successfully made a living in the metropolitan city. Moreover, the chief of his village sends a messenger to look for him and bring him back to the village since he is going to get promoted to become the next chief in the village. Furthermore, he experiences dilemmas since he needs to encounter some protests from the notable village elder. This research was aimed at investigating Sundanese values and ideology on Rocker Balik Kampung (2018) by Uli Rahman. The research used qualitative approach through semiotics analysis by Roland Barthes. The analysis utilized denotation and connotation level of signs through various scenes on the film. The data collection technique was done using document analysis. The result showed that Somèah values and the ideology of Cageur, Bageur, Bener, Singer, and Pinter are really prominently depicted on the film.   Keywords: Sundanese; cultural values; ideolo

Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the anxiety that has been experienced by the main character from the novel If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo. Through the analytical descriptive method and supported with psychoanalysis theory, the present writer also concludes that the main character has experienced the anxiety, which gives the influence in her social life. This anxiety is influenced by the internal and external factors. Two differences background which affected are sexual disorder behavior of the main character and harsh environment which made the main character has experienced the anxiety as long as her life. Abstract

This article is entitled The Impact of Psychological Trauma on The Life of The Main Character in The Novel Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman”. This study aims to determine the factors and impacts of psychological trauma on the life of the main character (Eleanor). The method used in this research is descriptive method and uses library research data analysis techniques by describing the intrinsic and extrinsic elements that are contained in the novel. The theory used is Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis. Psychoanalytic theory is used with the aim of knowing the personality state of the main character by looking at her past history. The results of this study show that the house fire that was deliberately carried out by her biological mother had an effect on Eleanor's personality and life.Keywords : trauma; impact of trauma; main character; psychoanalysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe purpose of this research is to study the theme, lexical and contextual meaning in the lyrics of the songs frequently sung in Quiver Center Academy (QCA) school, located in Gading Serpong, Tangerang city. This research uses descriptive analysis method. The analysis  result in the conclusion that noun is the most category word that has lexical and contextual meaning in the songs. The main reason why these words have lexical and contextual meaning is to know the meaning of the song in a deeper way. Moreover, they also support the understanding of the theme in QCAs are divinity, destiny, integrity, victory, struggle, and dedication.Keyword: theme, lexical meaning, and contextual meaning.

Abstract

This study analyzes the main characters defense mechanisms when experiencing conflict in Neil Gaimans The Ocean at the End of the Lane. This research uses descriptive analysis method with a literary psychology approach that focuses on Sigmund Freuds psychoanalytic theory regarding defense mechanism. The research technique is library research. The research findings reveal that the main character performs defense mechanisms such as rationalization, sublimation, denial, identification, and repression when he encounters unwanted feelings.Keywords: main character; defense mechanism; psychoanalysis; literary psychology; anxiety.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the antagonist in order to show the form of terror through acts of terror committed by the antagonist in Nicholas Sparks See Me. Processing data in this analysis uses descriptive-analytical methods and literature studies that are based on intrinsic and extrinsic elements as well as previous research on psychoanalytic terror. Based on the results of the analysis, the antagonist committed to acts of terror to Maria and this is expressed through every act of terror that he does. In addition, the antagonist does not have a mental disorder and this action is purely carried out on the basic of the hatred he holds, then turns into a desire to take revenge by committing acts of terror over his daughters death. The three acts of terror carried out by Avery were first, manipulating people, second, sending threatening message, and third by carrying out acts of violence which are part of the acts of terror.Keywords: antagonist; characterization; revenge; terror.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze word stress and factors that cause the differences in pronunciation in the news reading videos of students majoring in Public Relations. Using the descriptive method, this study focuses on how students pronounce words stress by comparing the pronunciation with Standard American English (SAE). Through the transcription of the news reading, it is found that there are 30 words containing word stress. Working with 10 selected informants, results reveal that the students can pronounce 16 words with the correct stress. 11 words are pronounced in different syllables and 1 word is pronounced without stress. The rest of the data indicates diverse answers by the informants but still highlights the mispronunciation. The factors that cause difficulties in the pronunciation of word stress in English are the interferences of the mother tongue, the inconsistency of some sounds in English, the differences in phonological rules between English and Indonesian, and lastly, the lack of exposure to English as a medium for communication.Keywords: pronunciation; word stress; syllables.

Abstract

AbstractThe main topic of this research is the struggle of an African-American woman in facing discriminatory treatment.  It is a study on the main character in Margot Lee Shetterly's novel: Hidden Figures. The process of this research involves the overall story, intrinsic elements: character and characterization, conflict, setting and plot and also extrinsic elements: liberal feminisme, multicultural feminism and racism. This qualitative research is conducted by applying descriptive analysis method along with library research technique, leading to the identification that racism and feminism turns out to cause discrimination. The main character, Katherine, undergoes dicrimination on  education and employment for African-American people. These experiences eventually prompts the main character to fight against discrimination by proving that she is capable of becoming the first black woman who works for NASA.Keywords : discrimination, female main chracter, feminism, racism, struggle

Abstract

The main topic in this research is gender discrimination which is based on the study of the main character in Bina Shah's Before She Sleeps. This research process involves the whole story, intrinsic elements: characters and characterizations, settings, and conflicts, as well as extrinsic elements: gender discrimination, patriarchy systems, and power relations. This qualitative research is supported by descriptive analysis methods and literature study techniques which result in findings that politicized gender disparities are the cause of gender discrimination. The main character, Sabine, experiences several forms of gender discrimination namely limited access to education and not allowed to work. Her only choice is to be a good housewife with three to five husbands, and to bear as many children as possible. Abstract

AbstractThis research discusses the psychopathic behaviour of the antagonist, John Bristow, in the novel The Cuckoo`s Calling by Robert Galbraith. This research aims at identifying the characteristics and causes of  psychopathic  behavior of the  antagonist and the impact on others and himself. The research was conducted using descriptive analysis method and psychoanalysis approach. John, who has hurt others without remorse, is not afraid of repeating his crime. He is able to deceive and manipulate others, not to mention coldhearted, and has a lack of emphaty. Strong id and weak superego originating from John's lack of attention and affection from his parents and closest people are the causes of John`s psychophatic behaviour. John`s psychopathic behaviour in turn causes others to suffer and causes himself to lose his family.Keywords : The Cuckoo`s Calling, Psychopathic Behaviour, Superego, Id, Family.
