Abstract

This study was conducted based on the misperception’s students in different mother tongue when delivered conversation in English. The aim of this study is to know the interference dialects of mother tongue in English conversation The data was taken from observation field notes and video-audio recorder in junior high school in Pasuruan city because in this school include of differentiate of mother tongue (Javanese and Madurese) the data analysed uses qualitative methods. Then, the result of observation field notes displayed by narration. The data was transcriptions of the discussion and phonetics were analysed by Cambridge advanced dictionary. The data shows: Javanese students less accuracy when produced /æ, ɛə, i: eɪ, aʊ, ə:, ɔ:, u:, ɒ, ɪə, əʊ, ʊ, ɑ:, ɪ, ʊə, ɔɪ, aɪ/ but no interference in conversation process, the conversation still work. for the madurese speakers less accuracy when produced consonant, it sometimes made a lack when conducted conversation. The researcher found sometimes the Javanese speakers misplaced of the articulation when producing ‘F’ and ‘V’ changed by ‘P’.

Abstract

This research simulates the use of ProWritingAid as an AI-Powered writing tool for checking the grammar and spelling of English writing. This research uses descriptive qualitative. The analysis shows that in using ProWriting, visit https://prowritingaid.com/. On the homepage, several menus appear both Login and Sign up. On the left side, the displays Get Started (it's free) for the free version, and Purchase for the pro/premium version. If we don't have an account, we need to register an account with Google, Facebook, and Single Sign On (SSO). We can register with an email and enter a password. We need to fill in several questions including "What type of writer best describes you?". Several options are Fiction, Non-Fiction, Academic, Business, Blogger, Copywriter. and 2) Choose where you would like to start using ProWritingAid. Several options are Chrome Extension, Windows, and Web Editor. We can start typing to begin writing or uploading a document. We will be assisted to check it and given assistance to improve our writing. The initial trial shows that in checking students’ writing using ProWriting, the students’ document score shows 50 %. Several errors are found in grammar, spelling, and style. Other trials are needed to check students' writing in grammar, spelling, and other errors. Grammar and spelling checker tools need to be investigated so students can find a suitable application to assist them in writing English. It is recommended that future research can discuss ProWritingAid and rater analysis reports to gain a deeper understanding of the writing errors.

Abstract

Understanding the connection between EFL learners’ speech fluency and its connection with motivation could provide alternatives for teachers to improve teaching approaches and develop learners’ self-determination. The study investigated the possible connection between motivation and speech fluency among EFL learners. The theoretical framework of self-determination theory and fluency theory was the beacon. While Self-determination theory may shed light regarding the different types of motivation that learners have, fluency theory can provide a base to understand how learners' speech fluency factors may interact with their motivation. A quantitative approach using correlation analysis was employed to collect and analyse data from 54 EFL learners aged 18-25 studying at a vocational university. The administration of a questionnaire to assess learners’ motivation and speech tasks to measure their speech fluency was employed to gather the data. The results show that for EFL learners in the context of the study, their motivation seemed to influence their speech fluency development. These findings contribute to our understanding of the factors that influence speech fluency in EFL learners and have implications for EFL teachers in designing effective pedagogical interventions to enhance students' motivation and speech fluency.
The Impact of Working Memory on Language Gain of Corrective Feedback: A Meta-analysis Liping, Chen

Abstract

The theme of working memory has been attracting increasing interest in second language acquisition because working memory is one important cognitive variable affecting the language learning process. Previous research has focused on the relationship between working memory and corrective feedback, but the impact of the methodological factors used to measure working memory and corrective feedback in those studies on the effectiveness of working memory and corrective feedback remain unclear. The current study provides a meta-analysis of studies of working memory on the effects of language gains after corrective feedback. In this meta-analysis, samples from 12 primary studies involving 489 participants were retrieved to calculate average effect sizes of the correlations between working memory and language gains of oral corrective feedback. The results found that working memory has a positive small effect sizes on language gains of oral corrective feedback (r =.321). The findings also showed the methodological factors had an impact on the correlation between working memory and language gains of oral corrective feedback (e.g., types of corrective feedback provided, measures of working memory used, research setting of studies, and academic status of participants). These findings make a better understanding of the working mechanics of CF and WM. These findings also make methodological suggestions for future research on the study of WM on language outcomes of CF in second language acquisition.

Abstract

       This research aims to describe the politeness strategy of the tourism practitioner which is tour guides in Borobudur tourism areas. Thus, in tourism industry tourist act as a gust and tour guides as a host, in which typically tourism practitioners will try to act politely and follow the politeness strategies as possible when they serving to tourist to ensure their satisfaction. The level of satisfaction can be determined by the politeness strategies of their behavior used towards the guests including the politeness strategy of their tourism service language. This research was done in Borobudur tourism areas, the main tourist destination in Magelang, Central Java. People can further strengthen their social relationships and respect each other's self-image by emphasizing polite communication. Through direct conversations with tourists from other countries, unique informal learning results in speech variations in English that are distinct from standard English rules. The purpose of this qualitative, descriptive, and conversational analysis study is to describe the linguistic phenomena pertaining to politeness strategies in the English variation of tour guides. This research method used a qualitative research design. Data collection technique were carried out through field observation, document review. Data analysis technique were based on the Brown and Levinson theory with conversational analysis. The result show that from speech data of positive and negative face. In data positive politeness that found 13 and 15 for negative positive politeness included hedging. The use of grammatical and lingual markers in the speech of tourism practitioners such as the use of the word (maybe, thank you, yes, good, may, like that, that’s it ...) become a model of politeness in the language of tourism practitioners in the Borobudur tourism areas.Keywords— Politeness Strategy, Politeness marker, Conversational Analysis, Tour guides.
