Abstract

Understanding the connection between EFL learners’ speech fluency and its connection with motivation could provide alternatives for teachers to improve teaching approaches and develop learners’ self-determination. The study investigated the possible connection between motivation and speech fluency among EFL learners. The theoretical framework of self-determination theory and fluency theory was the beacon. While Self-determination theory may shed light regarding the different types of motivation that learners have, fluency theory can provide a base to understand how learners' speech fluency factors may interact with their motivation. A quantitative approach using correlation analysis was employed to collect and analyse data from 54 EFL learners aged 18-25 studying at a vocational university. The administration of a questionnaire to assess learners’ motivation and speech tasks to measure their speech fluency was employed to gather the data. The results show that for EFL learners in the context of the study, their motivation seemed to influence their speech fluency development. These findings contribute to our understanding of the factors that influence speech fluency in EFL learners and have implications for EFL teachers in designing effective pedagogical interventions to enhance students' motivation and speech fluency.

Abstract

Video profile is a short video designed to introduce an individual, company or organization to the public. It is information about the existence of an object such as product, service, or area which has its own uniqueness, aimed to increase public awareness and trust through a clear picture of the subject being presented. Such video could be published on various media as a part of a marketing campaign. English Department of Politeknik Negeri Padang carried out activity to create a profile/promotional video in one of the thematic villages in Padang City, namely Kampung Manggis, which is located on Limau Manis sub-district, Pauh District. Being potential area in Padang city, this thematic village is the central area of mangosteen fruit in which 80% of the mangosteen productions in the city are from this area. Kampung Manggis is the second-largest mangosteen producer in West Sumatra, providing high-quality mangosteen for both domestic and international markets. Moreover, as an area that is also potential to become one of Padang City's agro tourism destinations, it is necessary to introduce and recommend the place to broader public through right media. There were three stages implemented in creating the video profile; pre-production, production, and post-production. The result was a five minutes-twelve second-video profile, which hopefully, will grade the existence of this thematic village to public after being uploaded to social media

Abstract

EFL pronunciation learning is known to be teacher-centered, in which students are reliant on the feedback given by their teachers. Fortunately, the presence of technology-based learning tools is believed to be able to reduce students' dependency on teachers. A built-in Automatic Speech Recognition technology (ASR): ELSA Speak is a mobile-based application that could help students with pronunciation learning by providing prompt feedback and detailed evaluation of its users' pronunciation accuracy. The objective of this study was to examine the use of the mobile-based application, ELSA, in pronunciation learning and whether it could stimulate learners to become more autonomous. A mix-method approach was employed in this study. The quantitative data, in the forms of pre-test and post-test, was gathered through students' pronunciation recordings available in ELSA. This data was analyzed using the paired sample t-test. In addition, a Google Form questionnaire, in five-point Likert Scale, was used to support the quantitative findings. Meanwhile, a semi-structured interview with selected participants served as the qualitative one. These data were analyzed thematically based on the participants' responses. The result shows that incorporating mobile-based technology into English pronunciation learning could provide an opportunity for students to improve their pronunciation. Moreover, students could also broaden their repertoire of available practice strategies that might be useful to improve their autonomous learning ability.
