Abstract

This research aims to describe the effectiveness of contextual learning models of creative writing based on the literary ecology of Indonesian Language and Literature Study (PBSI) students at Education Faculty (FKIP) Muhammadiyah University of Tangerang. The research method used in this research is Research and Development (R&D). The population in this study were all students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program in Academic Year 2020/2021 of semester VII who have taken Creative Writing courses while the sample in this study were 20 students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program of Muhammadiyah University of Tangerang. The results of this study showed that after pre-test and post-test trials in creative writing courses based on literary ecology in PBSI students at FKIP Muhammadiyah University of Tangerang the learning model used had positive results and had a significant increase the students’ poetry writing skills. This can be seen in the results of the pretest signification test obtained an average of 3.5 and post-test results obtained an average of 7.05. Therefore, researchers can conclude that the learning model developed by researchers in creative writing courses based on literary ecology is feasible and effectively to be used. The learning model made was final and has fulfilled the requirements to be implemented in the classroom.

Abstract

Classroom activities becomes one of necessary and beneficial efforts for enhancing students’ speaking ability. However, that endeavor will be advantageous and will not waste the time if the students like them. Therefore, this research aims at investigating students’ affect toward classroom activities on English for daily conversation subject together with their reason to have such kind of that affect. This belongs to mixed method research. The instruments used to collect the data were questionnaire along with interview guide. There were 78 (Seventy Eight) students participated to obtain the quantitative data and there were 12 (twelve) students to gain the qualitative data. The data obtained from the questionnaire were analyzed based on formula suggested by Heaton and Djemari et. All.  Meanwhile, the data got from interview guide were analyzed based on the theory recommended by Miles and Huberman. The finding of this research revealed that there were 80.76 %  (Eighty point seventy six) students had strongly positive affect toward classroom activities applied by the lecturer on English for daily conversation subject.  The reasons were the students convince that they can encourage them to speak and can increase their speaking ability and may provide the students’ opportunities to speak. Furthermore, classroom activities can express their idea creatively and can stimulate them to think quickly, critical and creative. Besides, through classroom activities, they have the bravery to speak English. It indicated that most of students like to have classroom activities. In nutshell, there are students’ positive response toward classroom activities. Then, they also have the rationale reason why they have such kind of that affect. It indicated that there were no psychological problem faced by the students when the lecturers applied classroom activities on English for daily conversation subject. It can be interpreted that the providing classroom activities which usually employed by the lecturers can be continued to be applied as an effort to increase students’ speaking ability.

Abstract

Logistic sectors are moving forward day by day, year by year. Their evolution brings big changes in the economic growth of countries. It drives the significant improvement in human life includes human life style, human’s needs, and human capacity. Their services has to be in agile and effective ways to reach the customer’s satisfaction. This research observes the capacity building of human resource in logistic sector in supporting the performance development of logistic companies in Indonesia especially about English capacity. The researchers use qualitative research in logistics sectors by observing, interviewing, and disseminating questionnaire to the owner, director, manager, supervisor of logistic company. Based on the research’s result, English capacity had by operational and administration staffs of a logistic company influence the business because a staff that has good English skills will run the communication as well to the customers directly and indirectly. It is because the customers of a logistic company are international customer and foreign company which have representative office in Indonesia. Explicitly, the results show that a maritime academy should prepare the human resource or in this context is a logistic sectors’ staff candidate must understand about the use of English before working in logistic sectors to support the moving forward of the company.

Abstract

The objective of this reseach is to find out the difficulties and the dominant factor that faced by the English students in understanding the listening section of the toefl test. This research used descriptive quantitative method. 18 students as the total population and 18 students become a sample of this research. The instrument of the reasearch was questionnaire adopted from Hamouda in Raini (2019). The questionnaire consist of 27 statements and devided into 7 tables. The result of this research shown that the highest percentage by using mean is in physical setting (50%) and the dominant factor is in physical setting (50%) where the problem that were the difficulty to concentrate with noises around and unclear sounds from poor quality-CD player are the biggest difficulties to the English students UNIB. It could be concluded that the content of listening test and physical setting become the highest difficulties and the dominant factor that faced by English Students UNIB. It was recommended for the  English lecturer should pay more intention towards to listening material and find more suitable method or technique in teaching listening course and students should find another option to cover the listening skill.

Abstract

This study attempted to investigate the types of sentence structures spoken by Joe Biden and Donald Trump in the election night speech in the year of 2020. The design of this research was qualitative and quantitative research. The total of 101 sentences of both Joe Biden and Donald Trump were analyzed by using syntactical structure analysis. The instruments of this research were documentation and checklist tables. The data were analyzed by using Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s theory, and Carnie’s theory was used for the rules in portraying the tree diagram. The results of the study showed that all types of sentence structures appeared in both speeches. In Joe Biden’s speech, there were 40% simple sentence structures, 26.7% complex sentence structures, 16.7% compound sentence structures, and 16.7% compound complex sentence structures. In Donald Trump’s speech, there were 59,2% simple sentence structures, 19.7% complex sentence structures, 15.4% compound sentence structures, and 5.6% compound complex sentence structures. In other words, the simple sentence structures appeared the most dominant in both Donald Trump and Joe Biden speeches. It is recommended that other researchers should study the sentence structures of other American presidents (e.g. Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barrack Obama) in order to expand the descriptions of sentence structures of the US presidents in general.

Abstract

The background of this research is the lack of student participation and involvement in learning English in the classroom especially for vocabulary learning. This is caused by the lack of students’ motivation, laziness and less understanding of students in mastering vocabulary. The purpose of this research is to describe the students’ participation and the students’ improvement in vocabulary after applying scrabble games. The method used in this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). The data collection technique of this research are observation, interview, and measurement. The tools of data collection technique are observation sheet, interview guideline, and test. The researchers applied Classroom Action Research (CAR) where the data divided into two kinds of descriptions; they were Qualitative and quantitative. The researchers obtained the data from cycle one and cycle two and then described it into qualitative and quantitative description. From data the analysis, it showed that there was a significant improvement in the students' participation and students vocabulary mastery. It can be seen from qualitative and quantitative data. From qualitative data, the students’ participations were increased from the first cycle into two cycle. Meanwhile, from quantitative data, the result of the test improved significantly from both cycles.  It could be concluded that the scrabble game technique improved students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

Local culture is a crucial aspect in human life. Local culture relates to the way of human life such as thinking, feeling, and acting. It is undeniable that local culture could be used in the academic context as the medium in learning English. By using local culture, students will be able to empower their ability in thinking, speaking, and writing. Therefore, the teachers are required to design the learning process by providing local culture contents or materials that the students are familiar with. This research aimed to analyse whether Junior High School's teachers have implemented three ways in a local culture based on teaching English which was proposed by Goldberg and to find out whether the students feel more enthusiastic in learning by using local culture content. Besides that, this study was to investigate and measure the influence of local culture on students’ skills before and after using local culture contents in learning English. The data of research were collected from two Junior High Schools in Timika-Papua, Indonesia. They were SMP N 2 and SMP N 8. The method of this research was both quantitative and qualitative. In gaining the data, the researcher distributed the questionnaire to 107 students and interviewed two teachers and two students. After that, the researcher collected the data, identified, and analysed it by using SPSS 26.0. The findings revealed that Papuan English teacher have used local culture contents in providing the English materials for the students. On the other hand, students’ skills can be improved to be better by using local culture contents in learning English.

Abstract

This research aims to find out types of using language style on speech by Aaron Beverly, titled “Unbelievable Story and the possible reason why the style use dominantly. The method used in this research was descriptive quantitative research. The data were analyzed with using Martin Joos Theory (1976) to find the types of the style. The data were 70 utterances from 1 speech script. The findings showed that there were 4 styles used in the speech, namely frozen style, formal style, casual style and intimate style. The language style of the speech tended to have casual style as the most dominant style. It was possible to the speaker making an interesting light speech with the dominant casual style. The speech might be presented in fun topic and chronology where it became informal situation which was more relaxed in using language. Finally, the researcher suggests to the student to be able implement the style in presentation class or in learning public speaking. Also, the next researcher who interest to conduct research in the same study to connecting research to the next new literary ideas such as in public speaking skills in business.

Abstract

This research aim to finds out types and the most dominant of lexical cohesion used in the song lyrics The Greatest Showman movie soundtrack album. The methodology of this research is descriptive quantitative method. The objects of this research are 5 song lyrics in The Greatest Showman movie soundtrack album namely “A Million Dreams, Never Enough, This Is Me, The Other Side and Rewrite The Stars. The data were collected by using observation sheet and table checklist. The collected data were analyzed by using statistical formula. The result of this research showed that:1. All types of lexical cohesion namely repetition, synonym, superordinate, general words and collocation were found in the song lyrics The Greatest Showman movie soundtrack album. 2. The most dominant type of lexical cohesion is Repetition. It was concluded that repetition occurred dominantly because the composer or writer want to tell the reader and listener that the focus of discourse is in the words which have been repeated to emphasize certain meanings in order to attract attention listeners and to enhance beauty in songs.

Abstract

In this era, teachers need to choose the proper method in teaching and vice versa; students’ participation in the classroom should be one of biggest concern for the teachers. With the right method, learning activities can be more effective to the students and will also improve their participation. This study intends to use Numbered Heads Together (NHT) as one of cooperative learning method to improve students’ participation in classroom. The methodology that being used is Classroom Action Research (CAR) and the research method is quantitative. The researchers will observe and implement the method by making two exercises in group, then give a self-assessment questionnaire to the students about their opinion to individual activities and group work activities. The results showed that NHT method is successfully improved students’ participation and activeness in the classroom with each of the students recorded to have significant improvement in their participation, while there are pros and cons from the self-assessment about the students’ preferences for each individual and group work activities. There are also advantages and disadvantages from NHT method itself. The disadvantage is no doubt making the student uncomfortable and don’t like to work in group. Further research is suggested to take action to the disadvantage of cooperative learning method.
