Abstract

Things Fall Apart is a novel potrays the background of traditional life and primitive culture Ibo tribe in Umuofia, Nigeria, Africa and also the impact of European colonialism towards Africans’ society in the early 19th century. The research applies the qualitative method and it supported by the sociology of literature approach. The primary data are taken from the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Based on the analysis the researcher conducts, the impact of European colonialism in Africa which not only brings a positive impacts but also negative legacy. There are several points of the impact European colonialism in Africa : existence of christianity, existence of language, establishment regulation and contribution to development.

Abstract

This research was a descriptive research with qualitative approach. It aimed to investigate the difficulties faced by class A students in the Mathematics Education Study Program in mastering four English language skills (Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening). The subjects in this study consisted of 26 students who were selected by purposive sampling. To obtain the data, The researchers used two instruments, namely interviews and questionnaires. Questionnaires were distributed to students to find out the information about students’ difficulties, while interviews were submitted to informants to clarify information obtained from the questionnaires. The data were analyzed through three stages; data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions or verification. The results showed that most of the students had difficulties when they learnt English such as lack of vocabulary, low grammar mastery, and pronounciation. These three problem were regarded as the obstacles to them to perform the four English skills. In addition, facilities in learning as well as techniques or methods used by lecturers in the teaching and learning process became the factor influenced students in mastering English.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate the code-switching in communication between nurse and patient which takes place in South Malang. The people speak Indonesian language, Javanese, and Madurese; therefore, they are living in a bilingual society. This research uses questioner to collect demographic data and audio recordings to collect the communication production between nurse and patient while a nurse is giving an initial assessment. The data are analyzed by looking at the code-switching from a sociolinguistic view. The result shows that nurse and patient use code-switching not because they cannot speak one of the languages but they do not want to throw respect to each other. It can be seen from the word used in Javanese which is part of the mid-high Javanese speech level.

Abstract

Optimizing information and communication technology (ICT) in language learning is best solution for boring conventional classes. It promises both lecturers and students better achievement in teaching and learning. Especially in Grammar for TOEFL (name of course taught in the fourth semester of English Education Study Program at STKPI PGRI Pasuruan), did the (lecturer) researcher decide to use NST TOEFL Explorer as one of ICT products to solve some instructional problems. In order to achieve the objective, thus this research was designed as a classroom action research and it used field notes, interview, and TOEFL test as instruments. The use of NST TOEFL Explorer did not simply require students to operate the application; therefore the research team seeked for and implemented working strategies to improve the students’ mastery in Grammar for TOEFL. The data from fieldnotes discovered the students were feeling enjoyable in using NST TOEFL Explorer. Moreover, from intervew, the students stated that learning grammar by NST TOEFL Explorer could make them motivated and confident in joining real TOEFL. The data collected by TOEFL test showed that the students could gain high scores. As a result, NST TOEFL Explorer could improve the students’ mastery in Grammar for TOEFL not only cognitively but also psychomotorically.

Abstract

This present study aimed to improve students’ writing ability through self-assessment technique. The researcher used an action research method with two cycles. Each of cycle compromised four procedures namely: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The data was collected by observation and test. The researcher used an observation sheet towards students and teacher’s activities during teaching and learning process. In addition, the researcher used test to assess students’ achievement in writing. The subject of this study were 25 students of English Literature in Universitas Muhammadiyah Gorontalo who enrolled Essay Writing Subject in academic year of 2016/2017. The result showed that students’ writing ability improved significantly through self-assessment technique. The students had improvement in five aspects such as content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanics. The students’ writing average score achieved 86,2. The students’ response towards the technique was good, that the students agree of the benefits they obtained through self-assessment technique.
