Abstract

This paper reports the results of an English language needs analysis carried out at different multinational engineering companies in Batam, Indonesia. Through the implementation of needs analysis questionnaire to 50 engineers from various engineering companies, the perceived importance and frequency of linguistic needs of learners in terms of skills and sub-skills are specified. The results show that most engineers perceived reading as the most important skill, followed by listening, writing, and speaking; whereas, in terms of frequency, reading has also been perceived as the most frequent skill, followed by listening, writing and speaking. Emphasis should be put on receptive skills (a total mean score of 16.048) rather than productive skills (a total mean score of 15.423). However, findings also depict those engineers considered some of the oral communicative event(s) such as reporting work to superiors to be very frequent at work. The implications of the findings indicate that materials design and development should consider the incorporation of workplace scenarios as the basis for activities.

Abstract

The Banjar tribe in South Kalimantan has a traditional Bubungan Tinggi house, which is intended for nobles. This house is made of wood, in the form of a stilt with one roof angled upwards. This paper examines the solar geometry factor on the high ridge house, which is found on the pointed roof having a small geometric factor, so that the solar energy absorbed on the taper roof is small. This proves the local wisdom of the community in getting thermal comfort in their homes.

Abstract

The oil and gas industry deals with various challenges, and one of it is to comply with frequently changing environmental regulations in monitoring and management system. In this project, the focus will be in the necessity for oil and gas industry to monitor the movement of their employees especially for whom that were conducting tasks in remote areas to wisely optimise the runway resources while simultaneously reaching the needs of delivery schedules. To oversee the workers position, a comprehensive floor mapping system that indicates the real-time status of individuals is required on 24/7 basis. Therefore, the use of beacon system with IOT platform will be applied in this project. The concept is such as the employees are required to carry a customised beacon badge, for this badge will communicate valuable information to the Bluetooth gateway that coordinates the collected information to a cloud-based system for floor mapping process. In other words, an investigation and implementation of a beacon system through a Bluetooth gateway to a cloud-based system in accordance with IEEE 802.15 standard will work out.

Abstract

A lot of couples do early marriage, but most of them do not understand what marriage really means. The unpreparedness of the couple in marriage can have a big impact on their married life which leads to divorce and also have a negative impact on their children. An Android-based pre-marriage and parenting education information system can be an alternative to simplify the preparation and learning process for couples and parents. The method used for the analysis and design of the pre-marriage and parenting education information system uses the literature study method and data collection methods such as: observation and questionnaires to married couples and their parents, the aimed as a source for designing and building information systems related to pre-marriage and parenting education. The results of the method used include couples and parents being able to learn and prepare for married life as well as increasing knowledge about child parenting through their Android smartphones with the materials sourced from experts and there was a forum that can be used to discuss with other users or discussion with educator.
