Abstract

This study aimed to analyze English compound words in Republika news article. The purpose of research is finding the forms of compound words and the meaning of compound words found in Republika news article. To achieve the objectives, the writers use descriptive qualitative as the type of the research. The data are in form of compound words, in collecting the data the writers use documentation technique and the steps are reading the article, selecting and collecting the data systematically in accordance with the forms and the meaning of compound words. Based on the data analysis the writers found 11 data of compound words in Republika news article. There are three forms of compound words, they are Noun compound (7 data), Verb compound (3 data), and Adjective compound (1 data). And the meaning of compound words, there are 7 data which belong to transparent meaning and there are 4 data which belong to opaque meaning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relation of Students’ anxiety and reading comprehension  among senior high school students in Klari Karawang, West Java Province, Indonesia. Participants of this study were thirty students of twelve grade at  SMAN 1 Klari Karawang The study was conducted with a quantitative approach and performed in Klari, Karawang. Based on the findings, the result show there is no significant correlation in Students’ anxiety because in the data show the significant is 0,051 more than 0,05 (> 0,05). The result also show there is no significant correlation in Reading comprehension because in the data show the significant is 0,051 more than 0,05 (> 0,05). Based on the data obtained from thirty participants showed that treat anxiety is 10% , state anxiety is 17%  and situation specific anxiety is 73%.  Measurement of reading  anxiety was done by using Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Scale (FLRAS). Moreover, the researcher give a suggestion for teacher to make a preventive activity, for example to avoid students’ anxiety in reading comprehension, the teacher can provide comfort environment in learning activity, it will help to decrease students’ level of anxiety and it is necessary to motivate student to increase their desire to read more English text and understand the context.

Abstract

The aim of this paper was to know type of clause relations used in The Guardian Article and to find out the dominant type of clause relation, entitled Destroying the world's natural heritage: 'Komodo is Reaching a Tipping Point'. The researcher using the data from online newspaper with qualitative method and descriptive analysis. The researcher uses Winter theory in 1977 to analysis type of clause relations. The result shows that there are two types of clause relations that used in The Guardian Article, there are Matching Relation & Logical Sequence Relation with some sub-types. The most dominant type that found in The Guardian Article is Cause-Consequence. Keywords:  Clause Relation, Online News, Discourse

Abstract

One of English skills which is important to be mastered by the students’ is writing skill. Writing is a creative and expressive process. Students need to explore their ideas and compose into a good text. The objectives of this research is to find out types of error and the most dominant error writing using simple present tenses in a descriptive text made by the seventh grade students of MTs Asih Putera. The research design is qualitative design. The data were gathered from students’ test as a document analysis. Then, the researcher analyzed, classifying errors the students’ work based on types of errors by Dulay (1982). For calcuting the data, the researcher used one formula to know percentages errors. The result of this research, showed that there are 73 items of errors which occur in students’ sentence. It is found that 42 items or 57,53% errors are omission, 10 items or 13,70% are addition, 16 items or 21,92% are misformation, and 5 items or 6,85% are disordering. The conclusion based on the research result data, most student were made error in using simple present tense in a descriptive text, especially was ommision errors.

Abstract

This paper describes the using of flash cards to improve mastery of the vocabulary of young learners. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the effectiveness and ineffectiveness of flash cards used in teaching vocabulary for young learners. Researchers conducted research using quantitative methods to elementary school children in SDN 2 Cijenuk. The study was conducted in four steps: first planning action, second implementation, and third observation, and last reflection. Data were collected using quantitative data collection techniques. The results showed that the use of Flashcards can improve the mastery of children's vocabulary. This can be seen from the average value of the test that increased from 71.50 on the previous test to 85.55 in the post-test. Using a flash card can make students pay attention to the lessons well and not make students bored, also makes the learning atmosphere more controllable. Keywords:  Vocabulary Mastery, Flash Card, Young Learner

Abstract

This research entitled An Analysis Speech Act Used By Anna As The One of Characters in “Frozen” Movie Script, in this analysis the writers to find out the utterances that appear and the influence for the hearer aster the utterances is stated. Each speech showing three parts of speech acts, namely locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary. However, this study only focuses on the discussion of illocutionary acts because basically the aim of the research is to find out what illocutionary acts used by Anna as one of the characters in the frozen movie so that the sense of a speech can be understood well in certain social interaction. The film of Frozen was chosen as the source of the data in this research because of the many illocutionary acts of speech spoken by Anna. The data was collected from the “Frozen” movie script . Based on the result of the study, the data found there are five kinds of illocutionary acts in the script, namely; 102 representatives forces,  32 directives forces, 11 commisive forces,  41 expressives forces, and 1 declarative force.

Abstract

The objective in this research was to find out whether or not  The use of Picture Series in Teaching Speaking was effective to improve the students’ speaking ability to in Junior High School. In this research the writer used one group pretest-posttest designs. The population of this research in FirstGrade class students of the Junior High School and the sample in First class. The instrument of this research was speaking test. The data of this research were collected by giving pretest and posttest.  Then, The collected data was calculated by using SPPS version 24. The result of this research show, that Normality distribution value of pretest 0.132 and significance values of posttest is 0.200 the data was normal because both of significance value more than 0.05,and significance value (2-tailed) of t-test lower than 0.05.  It mean the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected.Thus, it can be concluded The use of picture series in teaching speaking  is effective in improving students speaking ability, it is similar to this research.Keywords:  Picture Series, Speaking Skill

Abstract

This research paper aims at finding whether the students’ ability in listening can be improved by activating students’ previous knowledge. The research was conducted at English education study program of faculty of IKIP Siliwangi Bandung. The research used random sampling class and test by giving pretest and post test. Two classes are experimental class and control class, when the experimental class  got a better score than control class.The experimental class was increased in listening ability. Most of the student’s of experimental class students’ stay in fair category.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify deixis forms and meanings used in Jakarta post articles. This study was applied qualitative descriptive. Then, it was analyzed by using the Dylgjeri and Kazazi concept the data was table from in article Jakarta Post. The findings indicate that the types of deixis found in articles selected from the Jakarta Post are the first person there are I, Me, My, We, and Our (In third person there are She, Her, His, Him, and They), deixis spatial (there are school, class, hospital, on the stairs, world, here and there.), and temporal deixis. (there are now, then, five month ago, today, and yesterday). The results of this study show that person deixis is used 157 times and have percentage 66.5% spatial deixis is used 54times and have percentage 22.8% and temporal deixis is used 25times and have percentage 10,5% Keywords:  Pragmatic, Deixis

Abstract

This study is aimed to investigate the influence of scrabble game in teaching vocabulary mastery at tenth grade students of SMKN 7 Pandeglang. This research used randomized matched subject pretest posttest design control group.Seventy students were appointed as the representative sample of this research. Samples were taken by considering students’ English score. The resulted data analyzed and compared by using comparison technique, whether the researcher compared the results of pre-test and post-test of both different groups, average score pretest and posttest of accountancy class (did not use scrabble) is 41.74285714 average score pretest and posttest is 49.37142857 (use scrabble game). Based on analysis of data, this research showed that students who are taught by using scrabble game got higher score than students who are taught without any teaching technique.Keywords:        Teaching Vocabulary Mastery, Teaching Vocabulary’s Game, and Scrabble Game
