Abstract

Kata kunci: sekolah, dilema pendidikan, masyarakat modernAbstractThis study scrutinizes on the dilemma of educational system of modern society in Indonesia. Methodologically, to conduct data and information, the study employs a qualitative approach as methodology as well as documentation and interviews as a technique of data-gathering. The collected data then is analyzed and interpreted descriptively to get a proper conclusion. Based on the reliable sources, this study provides five cases that took place in the Indonesia?s education world. First is the unhumanist curriculum. Second are cases on the student suicide and the violence toward the student. Third is the reality of elite school as a business commodity. Fourth is the poor relationship between educators, students, and the student organization. Fifth is inexpediency of school programs for the students. Eventually, we must materialize a proper education system for Indonesian multiculturalism culture based on the essence of education. Keywords: school, educational dilemma, modern society

The study focuses on two pesantren which are considered as the largest pesantren, they are MusthafawiyahPurbabaruMandailing Natal and RaudhahHasanah Medan. Quantitatively, both pesantren have more than 1000 entries, which come from various regions of Sumatera, and even outside it. The former was the oldest traditional (salafiyah) pesantren in North Sumatera while the latter was one of the earliest pesantren in which the system refers to the modernity of Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor. The method is qualitative research. Interview, observation, and document analysis were used to collect data. This study has found that two pesantren educated their students with moderate values. It can be seen from: First, their Aqeedah teaching mostly refers to the theological school of Asy?ari and Maturity. These two schools of theology are considered as a moderate school by contemporary moslem scholars, and as majority school of ummah in Indonesia. Second, plurality according to them is a necessity. Moslem has to seek for peaceful co-existence and mutual tolerance between the people of different religions and cultures. Third, the term jihad to them is not only in a physical war but also in intellectual, against lust and doing creative work in society.

Abstract

This article discusses the political participation of new voters of WhatsApp users in the city of Medan in the governor election of Sumatra Province in 2018. The purpose of the study was to find out about the understanding of democracy and the level of political participation of new voters who use WhatsApp social media as a political discussion. Beginner voters are defined as community members who have the right to vote, aged 17-21 years or have/have been married and registered as a Permanent Voter List. In order to approach the research problem, this study uses the theory of public sphere and contagion. Public sphere is a digital space where critical, rational and objective discussion is transmitted to others. The problem in this study focused on how political participation of new voters who use WhatsApp in city of Medan in North Sumatra gubernatorial election 2018?. Can WhatsApp social media be considered a public sphere in the digital age? The results of the study show that the political participation of new voters of WhatsApp users has increased significantly but the understanding of democracy is co-opted in the politics of identity. Digital democracy is castrated by politics of identity because of the social situation, family environment, relatives and peers, the influence of the pulpit and the religious scriptures and ethnic communities. Then, WhatsApp social media is not a public sphere but 'mono sphere' or 'solo sphere' which is privatized as a limited discussion room with family, relatives, peers, friends of religion and ethnic friends.

Abstract

Communication has been identified as the underlying factor for human development whether at the socio-scientific, socio-economic or socio-political levels. Globally, development communication has increasingly become a critical component in the pursuit of scientific, economic, agricultural, social and political advancement of human societies. It is within this context that this study uses the historical-analytic, sociological and direct observation methods to appraise the neo-colonial and dualistic development models. In doing this, it highlights critical inferences on how development communication could be more beneficial to developing countries in Africa, specifically Nigeria, by way of communicating science and producing higher end products in the vital sectors of the economy. The conclusion reached is that through the dynamics of development communication the Nigerian populace can be mobilised and empowered to be productively creative in their contributions to Nigeria?s gross domestic product (GDP) and improve their living standard.

Abstract

Kata kunci: kritik, perguruan tinggi, budaya akademikAbstractEducation becomes political arena and it is not neutral. Because of education womb will create idealistic or pragmatic people, humanist or dehumanis, tolerant or intolerant, integrity or the critical integrity, and individualist or socialist. Education has a very significant role in the birth and form certain individuals. All of it depends on the basic philosophy and values on which educational institutions are built and what educational praxis developed. A social climate that is built on the campus, is part of the hidden curriculum which also contribute in shaping the personality of academic society. Current phenomenon shows that there is a conflict of interests between ideology in higher education, the contestation between higher education based on academic values (academic values) that tend ethical-utopian and based on the values of the corporation (corporate values) which tends practically. Ideology of interests in education is real conflict of the interests between idealism and pragmatism. Higher education is supposed to be part of the social institutions that contributed to the formation of ethical-democratic society. When higher education loses its critical reason, it was not able to be a lightening for the community, or become agents of social change. But on the contrary, higher education is getting away from the reality in particular society. Keywords: critic, higher education, academic culture
