Abstract

This research explores the acquisition and strategic function of Soviet military equipment in the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) during the period 1960–1975. This study employs historical methods, including heuristics, source criticism interpretation, and historiography. The study draws upon primary sources such as official military documents, memoirs of key military figures, and archival reports, as well as relevant secondary literature. The findings reveal how Indonesia, in response to Cold War geopolitical dynamics and the deterioration of relations with the West, turned to the Soviet Union for large-scale military modernization. Soviet-supplied weaponry such as MiG fighter jets, Whiskey-class submarines, and SA-2 missiles significantly enhanced Indonesia’s military capacity, especially in the context of Operation Trikora and Operation Dwikora. However, the political shift post-1965 under the New Order regime led to severed ties with the Eastern Bloc, resulting in severe logistical setbacks and eventual decommissioning of Soviet weaponry. Despite this, Indonesia successfully adapted its defense strategy and conducted Operation Seroja in 1975 using restructured forces and new alliances. This study contributes to understanding the long-term impact of foreign military dependence and the evolution of Indonesia’s defense posture during a volatile geopolitical era.

Abstract

The tuberculosis control program at Beringin Sakti Health Center represents a national public health strategy aimed at reducing the incidence and impact of one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases. However, the effectiveness of this program is significantly hindered by deep-rooted cultural beliefs in communities such as Nagari Taratak Tinggi, West Sumatra. This qualitative descriptive study explores how cultural values, traditional healing practices, and local authority figures affect the implementation of the program. Using in-depth interviews, observation, and document analysis involving 12 informants—including health workers, TB patients, traditional healers, and community leaders—the study finds that tuberculosis is often perceived as a mystical illness caused by supernatural forces, leading people to seek help from shamans rather than medical professionals. The study employs Grindle’s implementation model to analyze the mismatch between policy content and local context. Top-down approaches, lack of cultural sensitivity, and exclusion of local leaders from the planning process contribute to low public engagement and trust. The findings suggest that TB programs must adopt a participatory, culture-based approach by involving traditional and religious figures, using locally meaningful narratives, and promoting respectful, persuasive health communication to bridge the gap between biomedical interventions and local belief systems.

Abstract

This research is a study of Golkar news curated in newspapers during the 1971 election. The writing uses historical research methods consisting of heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography stages. As a result, Golkar, to win the campaign, used the ABG (ABRI, Bureaucracy, Golkar) strategy. Newspaper reports revealed the strategy's implementation through a variety of tactics, including songs, rhymes, and slogans. Golkar used these methods to convey his presence among the people. The news also narrated how much the people supported Golkar. Furthermore, one can observe the disparities in coverage between government-affiliated and independent newspapers. In the end, the propaganda through these newspapers succeeded in making Golkar win the election contest in Semarang City with 58% of the vote. After the victory, the government established KORPRI and conducted party diffusion.

Abstract

This study examines the translation strategies applied to informal English expressions, slang, abbreviations, and memes found on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), focusing on how these context-dependent expressions are translated into Indonesian. The rise of informal language on digital platforms presents challenges for translators due to its dynamic, highly creative, and non-standardized nature. This study aims to identify and categorize the types of informal English expressions and analyze the translation strategies used using Peter Newmark’s frameworks while preserving the meanings and relevances. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the data consists of 21 posts from 3 accounts on X, selected purposively to represent various informal expressions. Each post was translated using DeepL and retranslated manually by the researcher, then analyzed to determine the dominant translation method and translation procedures applied. The findings show that Idiomatic Translation was the most dominant method, while the most frequently used procedures were Modulation, Descriptive Equivalent, and Transference. This study proposes new insights into translating informal digital discourse, especially for slang, abbreviations, and memes on social media, emphasizing that context-sensitive and real-time evolving language used in everyday online interaction is essential for professional translation practice.

Abstract

Advancements in technology enable a swifter translation process, enhancing the circulation of information on a global scale. Nevertheless, the translation process requires supervision to maintain the quality of the news, to ensure the essence of the information is accurately conveyed in the translated output. There are various translation techniques, and typically, each agency has its own standards and regulations governing the techniques and structures. This study aims to analyze the translation techniques in translating CNN news using Molina and Albir (2004) framework and assess the translation quality using Nababan (2015) parameters. It is found that the first news translation has high accuracy but with low acceptability and readability, indicating that the translation results tend to be faithful but sacrifice the other two aspects. The second news translation tends to prioritize the presentation of readings that are easier to understand and accept by readers, but has an impact on low accuracy. The third news translation tends to be able to balance the three aspects with a difference in the average score of accuracy (2.67), which is closely aligned with the scores for acceptability and readability. Based on the final calculation with weighted scores, the results obtained show that overall, the CNN Indonesia translator succeeded in translating CNN International news well and obtained a final average score of 2.70, which is very close to the maximum score of 3.0.

Abstract

This article examines the 1976 Semarang City expansion policy in response to the population surge and socio-economic disparities that emerged in the early New Order era. The study uses a historical-critical approach, drawing on local newspaper archives (Suara Merdeka and Kartika), statistical data from 1973 to 1977, and official regulations (Government Regulation No. 16 of 1976). The research findings reveal that the expansion was initiated locally by Mayor Soepardjo Roestam and later received official approval from the central government. The policy expanded the city's administrative area from approximately 9,742 hectares to 37,366 hectares through the addition of seven new sub-districts. While the expansion succeeded in opening up space for growth and redistributing urban density, it also posed substantial administrative, social, and fiscal challenges. Contemporary media reports highlighted gaps between planning and implementation, including administrative overload at the sub-district level, under-served rural areas, and delayed infrastructure development in newly integrated zones. This article concludes that the expansion of Semarang City in 1976 was a complex spatial planning policy, reflecting the top-down development model of the New Order regime, which prioritized regional expansion as a solution to urban pressures.

Abstract

This research raises the urgency of preserving the Tabot tradition in Bengkulu City, which plays an important role in shaping social identity and social harmony amid the challenges of globalization. This research aims to understand how the younger generation plays a role in preserving the Tabot tradition as a cultural symbol and collective identity and how this tradition strengthens social ties in a multicultural society. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study design, where data was obtained through semi-structured interviews with participants actively involved in the Tabot tradition. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, and data analysis was conducted using thematic analysis techniques. This study found that the participation of the younger generation in the Tabot tradition not only strengthens the sense of local cultural pride and identity but also enhances social cohesion in a diverse society. The main implication of this study is the importance of understanding the role of cultural traditions in shaping social identity and building social capital, which can be a foundation for strengthening the sustainability of local culture in a modern context.

Abstract

History learning in schools is still dominated by conventional methods such as lectures and memorization, which has an impact on low student participation and the linkage between the material and historical reality. In fact, history is a science that is rich in the value of life if it is conveyed contextually and based on real evidence. Museums as cultural heritage preservation institutions have great potential as an authentic and interactive source of historical learning, especially in conveying historical material during the pre-literacy period. One example is the Patiayam Museum in Central Java, which stores important archaeological relics from the Pleistocene period. However, the use of museums in history learning in schools is still limited due to the lack of integration with the curriculum and the limited resources of teachers. Therefore, this study aims to examine the potential of museums, especially the relics of the preliterate period in the northern part of Java, as a source of contextual, relevant, and meaningful historical learning. The study also highlights the importance of collaboration between schools, governments, and museum managers in supporting learning based on local historical sources. Keywords: Patiayam Museum, Education, Learning Resources
