Abstract

Reverse culture shock is the next level of culture shock phenomenon that is commonly caused by asymmetric locations and frequently happens to sojourners returning to their homeland. Cities like Malang and Surabaya are examples of asymmetrical locations that are highly contrasted in terms of life pace as Malang is slow-paced while Surabaya is fast-paced. This circumstance potentially establishes such culture shock phenomena. This study, therefore, aims to examine the culture shock and reverse culture shock phenomena experienced by sojourners by focusing on its influence in shaping their personal traits and views. This study is categorized as qualitative research. The data collection technique is in the form of interviews with the sojourners who have met the criteria. This study applied Mizerow’s theory of transformative learning to analyze the data. The result of this study reveals that all participants had undergone both culture shock and reverse culture shock experiences. They also showed indications of which phenomena have influenced their personal traits and views in certain perspectives, specifically in shaping gratitude traits..

Abstract

Need for achievement is an inner drive possessed by individuals to achieve the desired goals. The theory used in this study is David McCelland's theory with the need for achievement theory (1971). The purpose of this study was to determine the dynamics and description of need for achievement in SMP X Surabaya students. This research used a qualitative study approach. The choice of method and design is in accordance with the research objectives, namely to explore the need for achievement from the subject's point of view along with the dynamics that arise in the data collection process. The results of this study indicate that both subjects have a high need for achievement, because they have aspects of need for achievement and are followed by several attitudes such as self-confidence, gratitude, the role of spirituality, positive meaning and so on.There are several factors that make both subjects have a need for achievement, including having class goals and being balanced with productive activities so that they can make both subjects become empowered. Not only that, the attitude of a champion's heart is also determined by having an unyielding attitude, a hardy person, self-confidence, and having a sense of gratitude. Such a big push makes both subjects also have a need for achievement.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of idioms and their translation strategies in the Indonesian subtitles of the movie Herbie Fully Loaded. The background of this study stems from the challenges faced in translating non-literal idioms rich in cultural nuances, particularly in audiovisual contexts with technical limitations such as duration and display space. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this study identified 70 valid idioms that appeared in the movie’s dialogue and visual elements. The idioms were then classified according to Fernando’s (1996) theory into pure idioms, semi-idioms, and literal idioms. The analysis results show that pure idioms and semi-idioms each dominate with a percentage pf 47.14%, while literal idioms only account for 5.72%. Idiom translation strategies were analyzed using Baker’s (2018) theory, and it was found that the most dominant strategy was paraphrasing (85.71%), followed by the use of idioms with similar meanings but different forms (11.43%). Only one idiom was translated using an idiom with similar form and meaning, and one idiom was omitted. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on automotive-themed idioms in family movies, as well as its exploration of te reasons for choosing the paraphrasing strategy in the context of subtitle limitations and cultural differences.

Abstract

This study examines translation strategies used in the Indonesian versions of ten popular Disney songs, in response to the growing importance of culturally resonant translations in global media. With over 2.5 million Disney+ Hotstar users in Indonesia, localized song lyrics play a key role in enhancing audience engagement. Using a descriptive qualitative method and documentation analysis, this research analyzes English and Indonesian lyrics of songs such as Let It Go, A Whole New World, and Beauty and the Beast. Findings show paraphrasing as the most frequently used strategy (165 instances), followed by adaptation and substitution (59 each), omission (25), and addition (2). These results highlight how translators prioritize meaning and musicality in Indonesian renditions. The study concludes that song translation requires balancing semantic accuracy, rhythm, and cultural context. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of audiovisual translation in multilingual and multicultural contexts. Future work may explore similar strategies across other languages and media platforms.

Abstract

English as lingua franca, the main focus is on achieving mutual understanding rather than using perfect grammar or sounding like a native speaker. However, students often face challenges in speaking fluently due to different accents, proficiency levels, and cultural references, which can lead to misunderstandings and communication disruption. Such strategies help speakers maintain politeness, ensure clarity, and improve efficiency in their interactions. In professional contexts, these three strategies are important to support smooth and successful communication between individuals from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. This study aimed to fill the gap by focusing on the real experiences during internship of Applied Foreign Language students involved in business communication using English as a lingua franca. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research found that students employed various communication strategies to manage language gaps. The use of politeness, clarity, and efficiency strategies helped to improving their confidence, enhancing their professional self-respect, and encouraging more active participation in workplace interactions. In conclusion, these communication strategies are effective tools that help students handle language challenges, maintain clear and respectful communication, and engage more fully in professional settings where English functions as a Lingua Franca.

Abstract

One of the service companies in Surabaya is currently undergoing a generational leadership transition, marked by the emergence of millennial leaders in key positions. This study aims to explore the leadership style of a millennial leader in a multigenerational team context, with a focus on identifying behaviors aligned with the four dimensions of transformational leadership: idealized influence, inspirational motivation, individualized consideration, and intellectual stimulation. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through participant observation over three working days and semi-structured interviews with the subject. The findings indicate that the subject actively applies transformational leadership, particularly through motivational encouragement, coaching, and inclusive decision-making processes. Although direct observation revealed stronger expressions of inspirational motivation and intellectual stimulation, interview data confirmed the presence of all four transformational dimensions in the subject’s leadership approach. This leadership style contributes to a positive team climate, increased engagement, creativity, and productivity. The study reinforces the relevance of transformational leadership in managing multigenerational teams and highlights the adaptive capacity of millennial leaders in contemporary organizational settings.

Abstract

This research investigates the impact of digital financial inclusion on the marketing strategies of micro enterprises in Tomohon, Indonesia. Digital financial inclusion refers to the accessibility and use of financial technology by micro enterprises to enhance their operations and marketing efforts. The study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing in-depth interviews and case studies to gather data from micro enterprise owners who have adopted digital financial technology. The findings reveal that while the adoption of digital financial technology among micro enterprises in Tomohon is still limited, it has shown significant potential in improving marketing efficiency and expanding market reach. The use of social media platforms, e-commerce, and digital payments has enabled these enterprises to overcome geographical limitations and reach a broader customer base. However, the research identifies several challenges, including low financial literacy, inadequate technological infrastructure, and limited support from government and financial institutions. These challenges hinder the widespread adoption of digital financial technology among micro enterprises. To address these issues, the study recommends the development of comprehensive financial literacy programs, investment in technological infrastructure, and incentives for the adoption of digital payments. Continuous monitoring and evaluation of these initiatives are essential to ensure their effectiveness in promoting sustainable growth and inclusivity. The research concludes that digital financial inclusion can be a catalyst for economic growth and development in Tomohon, provided that the identified barriers are effectively addressed.

Abstract

History education on the Indonesian Proclamation of Independence at the high school level often faces challenges due to predominantly narrative and textual methods, hindering students from deeply internalizing its meaning and actively participating. While various digital media innovations have emerged, their drawbacks include limited two-way interaction, high production costs, and insufficient school infrastructure. This study examines the relevance and effectiveness of the sociodrama method as an innovative alternative. Sociodrama enables students to empathetically experience historical events and figures, fostering active participation, collaboration, and communication, while requiring minimal infrastructure. The successful implementation of sociodrama is largely determined by the teacher's role and readiness as a facilitator, students' preparedness and active involvement, the historical accuracy and quality of the scenario, and a conducive learning environment. Thus, the sociodrama method is expected to enhance student participation, cultivate nationalism, and deepen their understanding of the human dimension within the history of the Indonesian Proclamation of Independence.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of free education policy in Indonesia from a constitutional law perspective, aiming to assess the extent to which this public policy aligns with the constitutional mandate under Article 31 of the 1945 Constitution. The research adopts a normative juridical approach combined with empirical analysis to evaluate how free education policies are formulated, implemented, and enforced across different regions. Legal documents, regulations, and policy instruments such as the School Operational Assistance (BOS) program and regional regulations were analyzed alongside field data collected through interviews and case studies. Findings reveal a significant gap between constitutional norms and policy practices, as many schools continue to impose informal fees under various forms—contrary to the constitutional guarantee of free and accessible education. Inconsistent interpretations of regulations at the local level, weak institutional capacity, and inadequate oversight mechanisms contribute to persistent violations. The discussion highlights the need for clearer regulatory formulations, stronger enforcement frameworks, and increased legal awareness among citizens and educational stakeholders. Furthermore, the study underscores the importance of civil society participation and effective governance in ensuring transparency and accountability. Based on these findings, the research recommends harmonizing national and regional regulations, strengthening institutional capacity within schools and local governments, and introducing legal mechanisms such as class action suits to enable citizens to claim their constitutional right to free education. Ultimately, realizing the constitutional promise of free education requires a multidimensional and legally grounded approach that prioritizes justice, equality, and public accountability.
