SULUK: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, dan Budaya is a half-yearly journal published by the literary studies program of Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Ampel Surabaya. Suluk provides a forum for the scholar of literary studies, with special reference to linguistics, literature, and culture. The journal publishes articles on literature, language, philology, and culture of Indonesia with a special interest in the study of literature/language from different geographical areas such as Arabic, Indonesian, Javanese, etc. Suluk is accredited by Crossref, Google Scholar, Garuda, Indonesia Onesearch, Dimensions, Microsoft Academic, Index Copernicus International, Research Bible, and ROAD. Suluk uses the Open Journal System and email. It is a double-blind peer-reviewed by the international and national reviewers. This journal is an open-access journal which means that all content is freely available without charge to the user or his/her institution. Abstract

Penelitian ini mengangkat masalah kesadaran manusia dalam menjaga ekosistem yang semakin memprihatinkan. Tujuan penelitian ini menelusuri pelbagai fenomena ekologis bahari dalam narasi cerpen Pemanggil Kematian karya Jemmy Piran. Data primer penelitian bersumber dari laman Ruang Sastra (ruangsastra.com) dikaji menggunakan pendekatan ekokritik Buell. Ekokritik Buell menelusuri komponen alam nonmanusia, legitimasi kepentingan alam, tanggung jawab manusia pada alam, dan dinamisasi alam. Hasil penelitian menympulkan bahwa terdapat elemen nonmanusia yang ditemukan dalam cerpen karya Jemmy Piran, yaitu fenomena satwa laut, fenomena ekosistem laut, dan fenomena mistik laut. Legitimasi alam menunjukkan laut sebagai ekosistem yang menjadi pusat hukum tatanan dan adat masyarakat pesisir. Tanggung jawab pada alam ditunjukkan oleh sikap peduli kepada laut, beretika dalam menangkap ikan, menjaga kebersihan laut, dan menjaga satwa laut. Sedangkan dinamisasi alam tampak pada laut mengalami perubahan kondisi akibat pengaruh perilaku manusia yang menggunakan cara ilegal dalam menangkap ikan. Kesimpulan penelitian menunjukkan terdapat narasi mistik yang diimajinasikan pengarang melalui karya sastra (cerpen) sebagai model pewacanaan, yakni melalui kepercayaan terhadap sosok penjaga laut Harin Botan. Dengan kata lain, hal tersebut membuktikan jika budaya dan mitos masyarakat merupakan faktor pendukung kelestarian alam karena dengan kepercayaan tersebut masyarakat menjadi takut melakukan tindakan eksploitasi terhadap alam.

Abstract

Mitos tentang kecantikan mengukuhkan perempuan sebagai representasi dari keintiman, seksualitas, dan kehidupan sendiri. Naomi Wolf menyebutkan mitos purba tersebut didengungkan dalam peradaban manusia sejak zaman dahulu. Produk-produk kecantikan yang menjamur menunjukan bagaimana kuatnya hegemoni mitos tersebut memengaruhi kehidupan manusia. Tak hanya produk kecantikan tetapi sampai pada ilmu dan kesenian telah lekat dengan mitos kecantikan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan narasi mengenai mitos kecantikan pada tokoh perempuan (Nami) dalam serial komik One Piece karya Eichiro Oda. Penelitian ini dilakukan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatis dengan analisis menggunakan teori mitos kecantikan Naomi Wolf. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa masih kental terdapat mitos kecantikan dalam komik One Piece (khususnya serial 1). Tokoh perempuan dalam komik selalu digambarkan bertubuh sempurna, khususnya Nami—berwajah cantik, dada besar menonjol, pinggang kecil, kaki jenjang. Namun secara paradoksal, di balik tubuh ideal seorang perempuan tersebut ternyata berdiam sifat iblis, sifat jahat seperti licik, serakah dan kejam. Mitos kecantikan ini kental menjadikan perempuan sebagai objek yang menarik sasaran pembaca komik yang notabene maskulin. Hal ini sangat berbeda dengan gambaran maskulinitas, dalam komik kaum adam seolah diperbolehkan bermuka hiu atau berbadan panda.

Abstract

The mass media tends to use euphemisms in political news narratives. The euphemistic was chosen by the editor to avoid controversy due to the broadcast of a news material. This research aims to discuss the types of euphemisms in the news narrative on Tempo political articles (December 2022-January 2023). Political euphemism is seen through van Dijk's paradigm which focuses on local semantics and lexicon, especially how political leaders tend to use this style of language as a political linguistic tactic. The data in the form of political texts were then tested again with Allan and Burridge's concept of euphemism who thought that euphemism as an ideal style of language in social communication in order to achieve maximum effect to avoid sensitive topics. The results of the study conclude that there is a tendency to use euphemisms in word and phrase classes by politicians. Their linguistic corpus consists mostly of metaphors, synecdoche, borrowing, hyperbole, abbreviations, and acronyms.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the representation of society and culture in Middle Eastern countries, including Morocco, Syria, and Jordan in the novel Geni Jora. The theory used is the theory of travel literature with the concept of representation of others according to Carl Thompson. Travel literature is a report about the world that is written based on the author's subjectivity and has a role in shaping the reader's knowledge. The results of the analysis show that the novel Geni Jora uses exploratory journey narratives and presents critical and courageous subjects. Morocco is described as a tolerant Islamic country because it succeeded in combining European modernity with past Islamic religiosity and Jewish culture. While Syria is described as a modern country, it is less religious and too Westernized. Likewise, Jordan is described as an Islamic country, but too westernized and inconsistent with Islamic ethics. The novel represents a contemporary travel literary genre that presents alternative and realistic narratives about the condition of the Middle East as a complex and diverse region. The novel also represents the contemporary travel genre which has not succeeded in narrating cosmopolitanism by still presenting competitive narratives and travel subjects that are superior when interacting with the characters encountered.

Abstract

Penyimpangan perilaku para protagonis dalam Sentimentalisme Calon Mayat (2023) merupakan bagian tak terpisahkan dari sistem kota yang mekanis dan kapitalistis. Perilaku-perilaku aneh tokoh-tokoh dalam cerpen Sony Karsono adalah sebuah bentuk perlawanan warga kota terhadap lingkungan sosial yang mekanis dan kapitalistis. Resistensi aktan-aktan cerita menjadikan tubuh sebagai medium pembebasan kungkungan kota yang serba materialistis, membatasi, dan menindas. Artikel ini berfokus pada perilaku menyimpang karakter-karakter utama cerita demi menghadirkan pengalaman esensial kehidupan kota yang unik, tipikal, karakteristik urban yang dibangun secara kapitalis. Protagonis yang bersetubuh dengan mayat, kawin dengan boneka, menikmati bunuh diri, onani pada saat dengar lagu kebangsaan, menggubah sajak-sajak seks vulgar perkotaan ditengarai sebagai perilaku parafilia. Memanfaatkan paradigma David Harvey mengenai situasi spasial kota, artikel ini memahami jika pelbagai perilaku protagonis yang parafilis adalah sarana untuk melihat kehidupan manusia kota yang ditopang kapitalisme. Perilaku parafilia tokoh-tokoh utama cerpen diletakkan dalam kerangka perlawanan penghuni kota terhadap habitat sosial yang kapitalis. Sistem kota yang mekanis dan kapitalistis sengaja diciptakan oleh pihak rezim kuasa yang ingin menciptakan status quo demi mempertahankan kekuasaan dan dominasi. Cerpen-cerpen dalam Sentimentalisme Calon Mayat menawarkan pembacaan kota secara berbeda agar terlepas dari cengkeraman kuasa kota yang menindas.

Abstract

Code-mixing is a phenomenon where two or more languages are combined in speech or writing. It occurs when individuals use elements from different languages within a single utterance, whether it be a word, phrase, or clause. Code-mixing is not limited to oral communication; it is also prevalent in written forms, including literary works such as novels. One of the novels that employs code-mixing is Antares by Rweinda. The characters in the novel utilize code-mixing to communicate with each other. Therefore, this study addresses two main questions: what are the types and forms of code-mixing present in the novel Antares by Rweinda. The types of code-mixing include inner and outer code-mixing, while the forms of code-mixing encompass words, phrases, and clauses. This study aims to examine and describe the types and forms of code-mixing in Rweinda's novel, Antares. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method to effectively describe the data, focusing on the main research objectives. The results indicated the presence of two types of code-mixing: six instances of inner code-mixing, including Sundanese and Javanese, and thirteen instances of outer code-mixing, such as English and Arabic. Meanwhile, in terms of form, code-mixing was observed in fourteen instances in word forms, where English words dominated. Additionally, five instances were identified in phrase form, also predominantly consisting of English words. However, no instances of code-mixing were found in clause form.

Abstract

This research identifies lexical bundles which are connected to move analysis in research article of Science & Technology. The corpus-based analysis was used to acquire lexical bundles qualification of frequency and range. A number of bundles which were listed in the corpus were identified structurally and functionally using taxonomy approach by Biber et al., (2004). Further analysis was conducted to connect lexical bundles expression with rhetorical move. Connecting lexical bundles and move analysis in research articles aims to test whether lexical bundles can be used as move markers in academic discourse. The classification of move in a full-length research articles was adapted from Nwogu (1997). In the various structural and functional forms of bundles which are found in this study bring to the list of lexical bundles which indicate various move. The finding of this research is mainly supporting previous study where some bundles expressions have strong connection to rhetorical move in research article. Other finding shows that lexical bundles expressions could occur in more than one move. However, we found that not all of the bundles could express specific move (e.g. the value of the, the length of the, absorption process of the) and not all move is expressed by lexical bundles (move 8).
