Abstract

Emilie Java 1904 by Catherine Van Moppès is a French novel that portrays Indonesia's portrait in Java in 1904, a century of Dutch colonialism in Indonesia. This novel describes Indonesian colonialism through the third lens, a narration from a French person's point of view. This research aims to identify the historiography of Java in 1904, where the Dutch carried out deep colonialism using a new historicism perspective. The qualitative descriptive method was used. The data involved words, phrases, and sentences containing Javanese historiography in the novel. This study found that 1) the Javanese people are friendly, embrace Islam, and have solid ancient beliefs. The nature of Javanese men who still despise women is also reviewed; 2) From the European perspective, Java's conditions are described as exotic and beautiful but chaotic and dangerous; 3) Colonialism is also seen from a neutral side by writing that shows the negative side of priyayi and the arbitrary attitude of the Dutch toward the natives. This novel implies that the Javanese were civilized before the Dutch came, which contradicts the primary purpose of Westerners coming to the East. Otherwise, she also showed the negative and positive side of Java and its people toward the Dutch.

Abstract

Romance is always referred to as a way for men to dominate women through the identity, roles and attitudes that women must carry out in a love relationship. However, in the development of feminism, the breaking of masculine and feminine stereotypes has the effect that love no longer restrains women. As a female singer and songwriter, Taylor Swift tells many romance stories in her songs. This research discusses how Swift rewrites women in romance. The twelve selected songs explain that women know their existence, identity, position, and thoughts in romantic relationships. Gender equality in romance is also expressed in these songs through how women can become subjects in romance. She has the same role, status, desires and rights as men in romance. Women cannot only choose to break up but also take responsibility and face separation as well as men. She dared to separate, did not whine, and could continue life without her lover.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how emotional dynamics, particularly heartbreak, affect the learning process of English Education students. The method used is mixed-method, with a sequential exploratory approach, where qualitative data is collected first through interviews with 5 students, then analyzed and continued with quantitative data collection through questionnaires filled out by 55 students. The results showed that heartbreak impacts on various aspects of learning, such as difficulty concentrating, decreased motivation to learn, lack of confidence, and delays in completing academic assignments. In addition, social pressure factors and lack of emotional support also worsen students' conditions. Thus, strategies are needed to help students manage their emotions in order to maintain learning effectiveness. This study confirms that emotional factors should not be ignored in the academic environment

Abstract

Abstract

This article examines contemporary Indonesian literature as a space for identity negotiation using a new postcolonial perspective. The research focuses on how post-1998 literary works not only represent classic colonial trauma, but also bring forth more complex identity dynamics through hybridity, third spaces, diaspora, and transculturalism. This study uses a qualitative approach to literary text analysis, examining the works of Ayu Utami (Saman), Leila S. Chudori (Pulang), Eka Kurniawan (Lelaki Harimau), and Laksmi Pamuntjak (Amba). These four works were selected because they representatively present the debate on identity in the era of reform and globalisation. The results of the study show that identity in contemporary Indonesian literature is constructed through fluid, non-linear, and dialogical narrative strategies. Saman presents the negotiation of female identity and the body as an arena of resistance; Pulang articulates diaspora identity and transnational politics; Lelaki Harimau reinterprets the relationship between violence, gender, and trauma in a local-global context; while Amba presents a space of collective memory that transcends national boundaries. Analysis shows that contemporary literature functions as a discursive arena where national and global identities are negotiated, debated, and recreated. This article contributes to the expansion of the horizon of postcolonial studies in Indonesia by shifting the focus from classical colonialism to the post-reform context. Practically, this research encourages the use of literature as a medium for multicultural identity education, cultural diplomacy, and critical reflection on Indonesia's position in the global era. Further studies are recommended to explore digital literature, diaspora literature, and interdisciplinary approaches such as digital humanities in analysing the dynamics of identity in contemporary Indonesian literature.
