Abstract

This study examines the implementation of fear marketing in the promotion of deworming medicine and analyzes its ethical implications from the perspective of Islamic economics. The research specifically investigates how fear-based marketing narratives are constructed, how they influence consumer behavior, and to what extent such practices conform to Islamic economic principles. This study employs a qualitative case study approach using digital content observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation techniques. The collected data were analyzed through thematic analysis involving data reduction, categorization, interpretation, and comparison with the normative principles of Islamic economics, particularly ṣidq (truthfulness), tadlīs (deception), and gharar (uncertainty). The findings reveal that fear marketing is systematically implemented through exaggerated health-threat narratives, dramatized visual representations, persuasive medical terminology, and urgency-based communication strategies designed to stimulate consumers’ emotional responses. These practices significantly influence consumers’ purchasing decisions by increasing fear, anxiety, and impulsive buying behavior while reducing critical evaluation of information. From the perspective of Islamic economics, the study finds that the use of misleading claims, disproportionate health information, and manipulative emotional appeals potentially violates the principles of ṣidq, tadlīs, and gharar because the promotional content tends to obscure factual transparency and create information asymmetry between sellers and consumers. The study highlights the importance of ethical marketing practices grounded in Islamic values, emphasizing honesty, transparency, consumer protection, and the avoidance of exploitative communication strategies within the digital health marketing ecosystem.

Abstract

Coastal reclamation has become a significant strategy for urban development, but its implementation often creates tensions between economic growth and the protection of coastal communities’ livelihoods. This study aims to evaluate the socio-economic consequences of coastal reclamation in Manado, Indonesia, particularly its impact on affected Muslim fishing communities, through the perspective of maslahah mursalah. This research employs a qualitative socio-legal approach by combining empirical field research and normative legal analysis. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with traditional fishermen, local government representatives, and relevant stakeholders in Maasing Village, supported by field observations and analysis of coastal development policies and legal documents. The data were analyzed thematically by examining the relationship between reclamation policies, community welfare, and the objectives of Islamic law (maqasid al-shariah). The findings indicate that reclamation has generated uneven socio-economic consequences. Although the project has improved urban connectivity and supported infrastructure development, affected fishermen experience reduced access to fishing areas, declining income, increased operational costs, and uncertainty regarding livelihood sustainability. Limited community participation and inadequate socialization have further contributed to perceptions of exclusion among fishermen. From the perspective of maslahah mursalah, these conditions demonstrate that reclamation has not fully realized public welfare principles, particularly in protecting livelihood and wealth (hifz al-mal) and maintaining social stability. The study highlights the importance of integrating economic development with social justice, environmental sustainability, and meaningful community participation in coastal governance.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between Zakat Scholarship Support, Islamic Financial Behavior, and Academic Performance among university students receiving zakat scholarships from four zakat institutions in Medan. A quantitative cross-sectional design was employed using questionnaire data from 64 scholarship recipients, selected through proportional sampling. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 3.0. The results show that Zakat Scholarship Support has a positive and significant relationship with Academic Performance (β = 0.390, p = 0.048; f² = 0.274), while Islamic Financial Behavior also has a positive and significant relationship (β = 0.507, p = 0.001; f² = 0.464). The model explains 64.9% of the variance in Academic Performance (R² = 0.649) and demonstrates predictive relevance (Q² = 0.470). Islamic Financial Behavior shows a larger practical contribution based on its effect size. These findings indicate that both variables are relevant to the self-reported Academic Performance of zakat scholarship recipients, although the cross-sectional design does not support causal conclusions. This study suggests that integrating zakat-based financial assistance with financial literacy and behavioral coaching is a promising direction for future research and program evaluation for recipients of zakat scholarships.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the influence of market power on the profitability of Islamic rural banks (IRBs) in Indonesia, with ownership and location incorporated as moderating variables and several control variables included in the empirical model. Profitability is measured by return on assets (ROA), while market power is proxied by the Lerner Index. The control variables consist of bank-specific internal factors and macroeconomic conditions that may also affect bank profitability. The study examines 154 Islamic rural banks over the period from 2015 to 2023 using quarterly observations and an unbalanced panel data structure. To account for the dynamic characteristics of bank profitability and potential endogeneity issues, this study employs dynamic panel data regression estimated using the system generalized method of moments (system GMM). The empirical results show that market power is an important variable influencing the profitability of IRBs. Another important finding indicates that the effect of market power on profitability becomes stronger when IRBs are owned by local governments. In contrast, the influence of market power on profitability decreases for IRBs located on the island of Java. These findings imply that healthy market power needs to be supported by managerial efficiency in order to improve the competitiveness and profitability of IRBs. In addition, considering the importance of geographical differences, the Financial Services Authority (OJK) should develop policies for IRBs through a spatially differentiated policy approach that takes into account variations in location.
