Abstract

Secondary caries can occur due to microleakage at the edge of the restoration followed by invasion of micro-organisms and sa-liva through the dentinal tubules; if left untreated, causes pulp necrosis. The aim of this article is to provide information on root canal treatment with fiber post restorations and composite restorations in pulp necrosis teeth due to secondary caries. A 17-years-old male patient came to dental clinic complaining of a pain in his upper right anterior tooth since 2 weeks ago. The tooth was filled with tooth-colored filling 1 year ago. The clinical examination, tooth 12 necrosis and there was a composite restoration on the mesial to incisal part with a discoloration at the border of the restoration. The radiograph shows a radiolucent area at the apical of the tooth and a radiopaque area in the coronal surrounded by a radiolucent area. Open access was performed on the palatal area for subsequent root canal treatment and continued with fiber post insertion and direct restoration with composite resin. Control was carried out 6 months after the completion of treatment; the adaptation of the restoration edge was good and there were no complaints from the patient.

Abstract

Background: Oral infections are currently treated with synthetic drugs, namely antimicrobials (antibiotics and antifungals) that can cause resistant bacteria, so alternative antimicrobials from herbal groups are needed. Arabica coffee peel contains phytoche-mical compounds (polyphenols, alkaloids, saponins) which have potential as natural antibacterial. Purpose:To examine the benefits of waste of arabica coffee rind in inhibiting growth of Streptococcus mutans, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Candida albicans. Methods: This experimental laboratory with the post test only group design was started with making of freeze dried coffee peels 25%, 50% and 75%; positive control used chlorhexidine and nystatin. The antimicrobial test method was performed by the diffusion method and the growth of microbial colonies was calculated using a colony counter. Result: Antimicrobial effect increased at all concentration of test solutions to the three microbes. This shows that there is a strong positive relationship between concentration and the number of microbial colonies. The higher concentration of dried arabica coffee peels, the greater the effect of microbial killing power. The biggest effect is on C.albicans, P.gingivalis, S.mutans, consecutively. Conclusion: arabica coffee fruit skin can be used as an antimicrobial oral cavity against the growth of S.mutans, P.gingivalis and C.albicans.

Abstract

The method of chemically cleaning dentures by immersion in an effervescent denture cleanser solution for a long time can affect the transverse strength. Betel leaf extract can be used as a natural disinfectant because it contains essential oils that are antimi-crobial by denaturing cell proteins. This study was intended to examine the decrease in the transverse strength of heat polymeri-rized acrylic resin plates after immersion in 15% betel leaf extract solution. The posttest only control group design study used a sample of 24 HPAR plates, which were divided into 6 groups. The plates were immersed in distilled water for 72 hours to re-duce the residual monomer, immersed in 15% betel leaf extract solution, the positive control group in Fittydent® and the nega-tive control group in aquadest for 1 and 6 hours. The transverse strength was tested using the Universal Testing Machine and the data were analyzed using the one-way Anova test. The results showed the average transverse strength after immersion for 1 hour in 15% betel leaf extract, Fittydent®, and aquadest, respectively, namely 46.512±10.965 MPa, 72.744±22.395 MPa, and 81.522±28.854 MPa; after soaking for 6 hours, respectively, namely 49.171±14.246 MPa, 73.894±25.844 MPa, and 71.860± 17.553 MPa. The LSD test showed that there was a significant difference in transverse strength (p<0.05). It was concluded that the immersion of the HPAR plate in 15% betel leaf extract solution for 1 hour and 6 hours decreased the transverse strength.

Abstract

This article describes a 16-year-old male who was referred to the Prosthodontics Department due to avulsion of the right upper central incisor and fracture of the left central incisor; the avulsed tooth was lost at the accident site. The patient refused to have his teeth prepared except for broken teeth so a single cantilever retainer denture bridge was made with fiber post design and ovate pontic. Radiographic examination was performed to evaluate the apical condition of the fractured tooth followed by initial im-pression for diagnostic wax-up, treated endodontically to prevent pulp necrosis. Preparation was carried out on tooth 21 using gingival retraction floss and the patient using provisory for 4 weeks. The final impression of the double impression technique was carried out with polyvinylsiloxane. The bridge is cemented using dual-cure resin cement. It is concluded that this ovate pontic design is very suitable for the treatment of the anterior region to achieve the best esthetic result as the main requirement.

Abstract

This article describes about the apexification of open apex with apical plug in immature permanent maxillary incisor teeth. A 12-year-old girl came to the Dental Hospital Hasanuddin University with a complaint of cavities in her upper front teeth. The teeth were filled one year ago, and it fell out about six months later. The right upper tooth had been swollen and sore a few days be-fore. There is a history of colliding at the age of 8 years. Radiographic examination showed a wide root canal on tooth 11 and an open apex with radiolucency in the apical area on teeth 11 and 21. So the diagnosis of these teeth was chronic apical abscess and asymptomatic apical periodontitis, respectively. After performing open access, the root canal was prepared using conventional cir-cumferential techniques, then dressing using calcium hydroxide was given for 2 weeks. Next, the apical plug procedure was per-formed using MTA. The patient showed no complaints of pain after treatment, and the size of the radiolucency image in the pe-riapical area of the tooth was reduced. So, it is concluded that apexification treatment with apical plug is one of the effective treatment methods to overcome the problem of open apex in immature permanent teeth. Abstract

Objective: Orthodontic treatment is the longest dental procedure performed. To accelerate tooth movement, orthodontists and periodontists have developed a new technique, termed Wilckodontics or periodontal accelerated osteogenic orthodontics. This technique combines selective alveolar corticotomy techniques, particulate bone grafts, and orthodontic force. This review aims to discuss the concepts and technique of Wilckodontics as a combination of interdisciplinary treatment. Methods: An internet-based search was conducted to identify various literatures discussing Wilckodontics using several keywords. Results: Wilcko-dontics can accelerate tooth movement in adult patients and shorten treatment time. Compared with conventional orthodontic treatment, this technique shows advantages in terms of treatment cycle and treatment effect. In addition, the Wilckodontics does not increase the risk of root resorption, periodontium injury, and alveolar bone defects. Conclusion: Wilckodontics re-quires various diagnostic parameters and modification of the procedure. With the right synergy of orthodontist and periodon-tist, successful treatment can be achieved.
