Abstract

This research aims to design a new typeface that reflects the characteristics of the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) campus and can be used in a variety of contexts. The new typeface, ITS-Artistech, was created by synthesizing key features into the anatomy of Latin letters, which were extracted from the key characteristics and images of the ITS campus. The typeface is intended to be one of several typographic options that reflect ITS and to pioneer typeface production at ITS, contributing to the theoretical and practical body of knowledge on designing typefaces that reflect campus identity. The research method involved collecting data on the use of typefaces in the ITS environment and ITS profile, conducting perceptual studies to know how people perceive the images and characteristics of the ITS campus, and developing the typeface through a series of iterative refinement steps. The new typeface is a valuable resource for the ITS community, as it helps to promote the university's brand, foster a sense of community, and support the creative process and the research of typeface design. It is also a unique and distinctive typeface that is not based on any preexisting letters. The typeface is available as a digital letterform (font) that can be installed and used for a variety of purposes, including digital and print promotional materials.

Abstract

This study looks into the efficiency of TikTok as a promotional tool for Conseva, an Indonesian company that specialises in fashion accessories and stationery. With an emphasis on reaching a bigger audience, particularly Indonesian women aged 25-34, the study uses a mixed-methods approach to evaluate TikTok's influence on brand awareness, audience engagement, and consumer behaviour. The study examined four different types of films for the Conseva Arctic collection, showing the difficulty of properly engaging the audience and driving customer behaviour through TikTok content. The findings highlight the importance of storytelling and hashtag strategies in digital marketing, emphasising the need for a more nuanced understanding of hashtag success on TikTok. The study's findings add to the expanding conversation about digital marketing by providing insights into the obstacles and opportunities connected with using TikTok as a promotional medium for local brands. However, the study's shortcomings, such as the inability to measure long-term impact and the emphasis on specific material types, should be taken into account when interpreting the results. Future research may address these limitations and expand our understanding of TikTok as a promotional tool for local brands.

Abstract

The rise of moral degradation caused by the waning of knowledge and application of human values contained in Bugis culture (Sipakatau, Sipakakainge’, Sipakalebbi) continues to increase. Seeing this condition, the design of picture storybooks as a medium for visual communication and introduction of cultural values as educational materials were carried out with characters and increasing segmented visual literacy for early children. The title of the picture storybook is "Petualangan Onding". Contains 14 pages and tells the story of a Bugis child named Onding and a monkey endemic to South Sulawesi named Upe who invites readers on an adventure to get to know the three ancestral values of the Bugis tribe: Sipakatau, Sipakainge', and Sipakalebbi. The work creation method is carried out in stages from data collection to the execution process. Data was collected by obtaining primary data from people closely related to the book "Petualangan Onding", and then secondary data from literature studies. The book design process uses visual elements such as colors with a refreshing color mood, typography from the font named “Amalia”, and the concept of flat design illustrations. These elements are mixed in such a way as to create a culture-based visual communication medium for early childhood learning and character education.

Abstract

There are many media campaign models, one of which is an animated music video. In 2021, an animated music video entitled “Sabda Alam” by students of SMK Raden Umar Said (RUS) Kudus won appreciation from national and international filmmakers at the Balinale International Film Festival 2021. As an audio visual-based campaign design, “Sabda Alam” has become one of the creative economic product models produced by vocational high school students. This video presents a narrative about the life of endemic birds in Indonesia that are threatened with extinction. The urgency of the issue of endangered species underlies the importance of this study to analyze the structure of visual narratives in animated music video designs that is able to carry campaign messages in ways that attract attention. This research uses a combination method, namely qualitative and quantitative analysis using a paradigmatic and syntagmatic structural approach in semiotic theory. Qualitatively, examines the visual narrative of animated music videos based on three storyline structures, namely the beginning, middle, and ending storyline. In each part of the storyline, analysis refers to the visualization of visual signs of the subject, event, and setting in the scene. While quantitatively, this study formulates the audience's level of understanding of the campaign message in the animated music video. The results of the analysis of the structure of the visual narrative show that there are paradigmatic associations from the scenes that link the existence of interest as a message clue. While syntagmatically, analysis refers to the existence of a function in the scene about something. The two are interrelated to produce a campaign message about the importance of protecting endemic birds in Indonesia. This study can be an academic reference, both in vocational high schools and universities, in developing inspiring campaign media designs in the creative industry.

Abstract

The relief panels depicting the Angling Dharma story on the Jago Temple offer a valuable resource for researchers, similar to the Kresnayana story reliefs in Prambanan. These reliefs serve as visual narratives, conveying the Angling Dharma epic. The sculptors meticulously selected key scenes from the text, translating them into captivating visuals and arranging them within individual panels. These panels, when assembled, form a cohesive narrative of the Angling Dharma story. In a modern context, this sequence of panels resembles a movie, unfolding the story through a series of images. To encompass the entirety of the narrative within the confines of the relief's surface, the sculptors employed a distinct drawing method known as the "space-time-flat" system. This approach differs significantly from modern Western artistic conventions. The unfamiliar style can pose challenges in interpreting the depicted scenes. This research proposes a descriptive and qualitative analysis of the "space-time-flat" method used in the Angling Dharma reliefs. By delving into this unique drawing system, the study aims to glean valuable insights that can be applied in the creation of various visual media. The analysis can shed light on artistic practices that predate the arrival of Western drawing techniques with their emphasis on naturalism, perspective, and single-moment depiction.
