Abstract

This study explains the discourse structure of antagonism in one of Trump’s political speeches. The analysis also describes the function of antagonistic discourse for Trump’s political purposes against his opponents from the Democratic Party like Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren. CDA is the approach used in this research. The theories of political frontier antagonism from Malmberg, Howarth, and Stravakakis supported by the annihilating dynamics of meaning from O’Dawyer are applied to the data taken from the transcription of Trump’s political speeches. The findings show that Trump utilizes specific nouns modified by adjectives to form a political barrier of antagonism between him against the opponents of the Democratic Party. The structure of discourse found in this study shows that Trump uses antagonism in his political speech to inflict a heavy blow to his opponents’ political image.

Abstract

This study, which was conducted as part of the final thesis in the master’s degree program in English didactics, attempted to measure the effects of Competitive Team-Based Learning (CTBL), developed by Hosseini (2000, 2020 & 2021) at Mashhad Education Office in Iran, vis-à-vis Student Teams-Achievement Divisions (STAD), developed by Slavin and associates (1977) at Johns Hopkins University in the U.S., on the reading comprehension of Iranian EFL intermediate students. As an emerging innovative Cooperative Learning (CL) oriented approach, CTBL accentuates systematic implementation of teamwork in competitive environments with a democratic ambiance. The findings of some researchers on the effectiveness of this revolutionary approach to language teaching/Education have been brought to the fore for the benefit of those interested. Sixty students were selected out of 75 based on their scores in a PET reading test. Then they were randomly assigned to two groups: control and experimental. Each group consisted of thirty participants, which were divided into seven teams of four – the two remained students in each class worked in pairs. While the control group was instructed via STAD method of CL, the experimental group was instructed via Hosseini's approach to (language) teaching (i.e., CTBL). The reading comprehension test (posttest) was used at the end of the study to assess the probable progress in the reading comprehension ability of the students. The results on an independent T-test showed statistical significance at P≤0.05 level that can be attributed to the effect of CTBL on the participants' reading comprehension achievement. Probable reasons for the success of CTBL have been elaborated at length. Implications of the study as well as some suggestions to language teachers, syllabus designers, methodologies, and researchers have also found a place at the end of this paper.

Abstract

The current paper has focused on evaluating Saudi junior students’ writing performance at Albaha University. In this direction, the study aims to assess the academic key performance indicators of Saudi male students who study Writing (1) course in the first term of (2019) in the College of Science and Arts in Almandaq. About 24 students participated in this study. They were divided into two groups: a control group (n=12) and an experimental group (n=12). A pretest and posttest were carried out to collect the necessary data for both groups. To analyze the data, the study used percentages and the comparison of key performance indicators based on the Thorndike Approach for evaluating students' results and the natural distribution for their grades. Results revealed that while 24% of the control group participants failed to pass the posttest, all the experimental group respondents passed in the posttest after implementing the course through Blackboard. These results showed a statistically significant difference between the control group and the experimental group in favor of the experimental group. In light of these findings, the academic key performance indicated that the students' writing skills improved after implementing the treatment through the Blackboard Portal which helps in enhancing students’ writing skills and achieving the students’ learning outcomes in the College of Science and Arts in Almandaq and other Colleges at Albaha University.
