Advertisement is a medium used to support an activity or a business. Through advertisement, the activity can spread out to the public or people. The study of advertisement can be associated to the field of pragmatics because  it contains several speech acts used by the producer or the content creator to the target of the advertisements itself, which one of them is commissive speech act. In relation to its purpose that is to introduce or to promote a product, either things or services, the commissive speech act is an effective way to use to attract the public’s attention. This research is aimed at identifying and explaining the functions and the strategies of the commissive speech acts. The source of data is the commercial advertisements of household appliances and health products on MNC Shop in December 2018. The data are collected by using observational method with recording and writing technique and analyzed by using pragmatic identity method. The result of the research shows that the commissive speech acts in the commercial advertisements of MNC Shop comprise promising, giving a guarantee, making a bet, and convincing. Meanwhile, the strategies used are direct utterance, literal direct utterance, and literal indirect utterance.

Abstract

Tan Malaka’s political discourses involve various nominative metaphors as the reflection of pseudo lingual symbols, for instance: the strategic use of the word perdagangan ‘trade’ as the camouflage of the word perjuangan ‘struggle’, the use of the term firm and pabrik to avoid the term partai ‘party’, the use of the term rokok ‘cigarette’ which is meant as the rebellion, the hidden meaning behind the word choklat and cacao ‘chocolate’ was pemogokan ‘strike’, the signified behind the signifier kuda ‘horse’ was tentara ‘army’, and the word tebu ‘sugar cane’ indicates the concealed meaning of uang ‘money’. The nominative metaphors on those Tan Malaka’s political discouses and letters were analyzed by Sawirman-e135 frame.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meaning of ISIS names in the Arab mass media from the BREAK theory perspective. The research data were taken from two Syrian mass media: Tishrīn and ‘Inab Baladī. The name Dā’ish is used as the primary discourse, while the name Dā’ish is a secondary discourse. The data was collected by observing the basic technique of tapping and the advanced technique of note-taking. Data analysis was carried out using identity method. The findings show that the meaning of primary discourse is structured through the eclectic use of theory on aspects of sound, form, meaning construction, and meaning changes. The analysis found that primary discourse has a negative meaning tendency and is contrary to religion's moral values (Islam) and state. Meanwhile, the meaning of secondary discourse is carried out by combining the theory of nominal groups, word structures, nominal relations, and stylistics. Secondary discourse has an ambiguous meaning because it represents ISIS as an entity that can be understood in two domains at once: organization and state. The comprehensive analysis of BREAK has shown clear linguistic stages of meaning so the meaning of ISIS names can be clearly understood.

Abstract

Four suicide notes written by three famous people, Jiah Khan, Kevin Carter, and Virginia Woolf, were analyzed in this study. Systemic Functional Linguistics theory especially about transitivity proposed by Halliday is used to see the ideational meaning of all four suicide notes by identifying the elements of the clauses. This study was conducted with a qualitative method assisted by a descriptive statistical method to see the spread and functions of the elements of transitivity in the suicide notes. To analyze the text based on the theory of transitivity, the text is divided into clauses based on the type of process, then each element of the existing process, participant, and circumstantial element is calculated. The results show that out of 170 total processes found, the material process (42.94%) is the most dominant process, followed by the mental process (28.82%), the relational process (19.41%), the verbal process (5.29%), the behavioral process (2.94%), and the existential process (0.59%). Just like the process type, from the two types of participants (who are directly involved and obliquely involved) that exist, actor (22.88%) and scope (15.36%) which are the participants of the material process are the most dominant participants. While the existent (0.31%) which is the participant of the existential process, has the lowest occurrence frequency. For the circumstantial element, location which consists of place and time is the most dominant circumstantial element. The location accounts for 44% of the circumstantial elements in all four suicide notes. Furthermore, Jiah Khan’s suicide note with the material process as the most dominant process describes the unpleasant behavior she experienced, which then leads to betrayal, sacrifice, self-destruction, loss, and loneliness. Whereas Kevin Carter’s suicide note with the relational process of attributive as the most dominant process describes regret, pressure, and despair. Then both Virginia Woolf’s suicide notes show how she blamed herself for what happened although it has different dominant processes between the first suicide note and the second suicide note.

Abstract

This current study, in which the forensic linguistic approach and the theory of textual generic structure were applied, focuses on the judicial text in which Jessica was the defendant and Mirna was the victim. The judicial text, in which Jessica was the defendant and Mirna was the victim, is a dialogical conversation containing the textual procedure referring to structure. The textual structure of the judicial text, in which Jessica was the defendant and Mirna was the victim, is made up of three main phases; they are the textual structure of the opening, the textual structure of the content and the textual structure of the closing. Each phase is made up of sub-phases. The qualitative descriptive method was employed in the study. The data were collected through observation and recording, and were obtained from 17 audio-visual recordings, which were then transcribed into Indonesian. The findings of the study show that (1) the opening phase was made up of the criminal trial phase, the interrogation phase of the defendant’s identity, the indictment reading phase by the general prosecutor ; (2) the content phase was made up of the question phase as to objection from the defendant (exception), the interrogation phase of the witnesses and expert, namely their (a) identities, (b) oath taking, and (c) the testimony of the witnesses and expert and the interrogation phase of the defendant; (3) the textual structure of the closing was made up of the indictment reading phase by the prosecutor, the verdict reading phase, and the trial closing phase. The finding of the study shows the representation of the textual structure as the textual procedural standard based on the judicial text used in the current study.

Abstract

Setiap politisi termasuk Tan Malaka memiliki kata kunci.

Abstract

Awareness Centered Learning (ACL) is a learning model developed to address the problems of students’ lack of awareness during the (language) learning process. The core objective of this model is to develop the internal awareness, good national character, and strong integrity of the students through focusing on authentic ideas and creativity building. This objective becomes the basis of ACL methodology in which the process is framed to be students’ self inflicted determination to contemplate, not only to think and to use. Contemplation on the objects of language learning material is the very ground of designing new authentic ideas and awareness which will shape more profound good character and integrity. ACL views language awareness in the context of learning English as a foreign language to be a mere means or instrument to master the knowledge in the western world, but not to be hegemonized or dominated mentally by Western centrism. Based on this point, the national character and identity to be shaped by ACL through learning English is to be equal to the westerns in producing authentic ideas. The purpose of this writing is to explore the history, concepts, indicators, methodology and philosophy including impact of ACL to TEFL and its contribution to the Indonesian character of education as well. This model had been disseminated in International TESOL Methods held by American English Institute of Oregon University during ten weeks since October 7 to December 13, 2013. ACL gained well reception from hundreds of participants around the world at that time.
