IJOLTL invites original manuscripts in the fields of language, language teaching, linguistics, and applied linguistics. Although articles are written in English, the IJOLTL welcomes studies dealing with the teaching of languages other than English as well. Research on culture of various perspectives as well as linguistics is also welcome. In addition, IJOLTL also considers papers in the areas of applied linguistics, language testing, pragmatic, sociolinguistics and discourse analysis. Reviews of literature are also acceptable for the IJOLTL. The length of paper should be between 3,500 to 8,000 words as defined in the author’s guidelines.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify derivational and inflectional morphemes in song lyrics of Lewis Capaldi. Specifically, the purpose of this research is to know the affixation process in the song lyrics, to classify derivational and inflectional morphemes, and to know the most dominant between derivational and inflectional morphemes in the song lyrics of Lewis Capaldi. The method of this research used descriptive qualitative. The object of this research was taken from the song lyrics of Lewis Capaldi’s album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent as the first album. The result of this research shows: (1) there are 42 words suffixes such as -ing, -ed, -s, -ness, -able, -ly and one-word prefix re- (2) There are 29 inflectional morphemes and 67,44% while derivational morpheme occurs 14 times and 32,56%, it means inflectional morpheme is the most dominant than derivational morpheme.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to figure out the mispronouncing English vowel sounds that are mostly made by University Students. The data were from 30 students of the Office-Administration Study Program Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika as the object of this research. The qualitative method is used for analyzing the recorded sounds that were produced by the students. The vowel sounds investigated in this research were sounds of [ɑː], [ɜː], and [ᴐ:]. The researchers gave 7 words each that contain the vowel sounds. The result indicated that most students produced the mispronouncing sound [ᴐ:]. They often missed or slip between [ɑː] and [ᴐ:]. This happened when the words tested were unfamiliar for the students.

Abstract

This study examines the sociocultural aspects of waria’s slang. Considering the current problems, the descriptive method was used to describe the results of this study. The object of this study is the various language used by transgenders in their daily communication. The data were collected, categorized, analyzed, and the results were presented in the form of a description along with examples. Sociocultural aspects that exist in waria’s slang can be the sociological, sociolinguistics, as well as cultural aspects of the slang emergence among transgenders. Sociological aspects include the use of slang among transgenders inclusively. Those aspects are the use of speech units in the form of words, phrases, sentences, and discourses. Furthermore, the establishments of waria’s slang are as follows: the sounds game, permutation, a play, replacements, additions, acronyms, and analogies. While the cultural aspects include waria’s slang function within the culture among the society members, which for: humoring, bullying, unifying, and as a communication tool.

Abstract

In a musical drama, a good song certainly supports the performance of the musical. When writing lyrics, many songwriters use figurative language to make their songs more lively and meaningful. One of the types of figurative language used is metaphor. This paper aimed to discover the conceptual metaphors in Les Misérables original Broadway soundtrack's selected song lyrics and find the meanings of metaphors found in song lyrics of Les Misérables original Broadway soundtrack. In the data analysis, a qualitative approach was applied to find the literal meanings and metaphorical meanings of the conceptual metaphors. The data were collected from 10 selected songs of Les Misérables' original soundtrack. The results showed that there were 25 conceptual metaphors of 48 lyrics taken from 10 songs. More specifically, 14 conceptual metaphors are classified as structural metaphors, five as orientational metaphors, and six as ontological metaphors in the selected song lyrics.

Abstract

This research is motivated by an interest in literacy particularly the script of films. This study aims to analyze the types of deixis on Zootopia movie scripts. This study is designed by using the quantitative and qualitative descriptive approaches. The data used in this study was the script of Zootopia film. Entirely, this research only focusing on analyzing the types of deixis in every scene of the movie. In this film, there are 41 scenes but only 15 scenes were selected for data analysis. The data was presented in tables and used diagrams in providing the tendency of deixis used on Zootopia movie script. The results showed that types of person deixis were 83%, discourse deixis 8%, time deixis 7%, spatial deixis 2% while other types 8%. In conclusion, there are all types of deixis were found in the Zootopia movie script, especially the type of time deixis found in various kinds of temporal category as many as 29 expressions such as next time, tomorrow, today, before noon, later, ago, soon, once a month, since, three hundred days, sixty-five days, five years, six years and a thousand years.
