Abstract

The need for rehabilitation services in nursing homes (NH) for the elderly is increasing each year, and this need is fulfilled both with ordinary clinical rehabilitation center visits, as well as community-based rehabilitation (CBR) inside the facility. However, a proper situation analysis is needed to establish a well-delivered CBR program in the NH, a niche to be fulfilled in this study. This study used a descriptive measurement and cross-sectional design to target the elderly who are living in the NHs. Consecutive sampling was done in the largest NH in Jakarta, in Cipayung District. Participants who were dependently ambulated were assessed in the NH clinic, whereas the independent ones were assessed in their room. Nutritional status and blood pressure measurement was done in the first visit, whereas psychiatric and activity of daily living (ADL) were done in the second visit. In the first visit, 32 (20%) participants were undernourished, whereas 25 (83%) participants have a psychiatric disorder in the second visit. More than half of the participants were also dependent on their ADL (n: 17; 57%). Malnourishment, mental illness, and higher dependency were found in subjects, which affect the conducted CBR programs. An inter-professional team (including a nutritionist, public health expertise, physiatrist, and psychiatrist) may be needed to conduct a well-established CBR program, as well as further study to find magnitudes of each aspect.

Abstract

The children of today’s generation are considered as digital natives, which means that they have the capacity to navigate technological terrains to the best of their abilities and create online communities in new storyworlds. Minecraft and Roblox, two sandbox open-world mobile games, are manifestations of such ability to create worlds, survive in difficult gaming situations, face opponents in combat, and interact with players within a community. Even more so, such transmedia engagements allow the child participants, as evidenced in this study, to transact with players and the app itself to introduce new playstyle strategies that complement or subvert the gameplays originally set by developers. This study aims to explore how child users navigate through various transmedia storyworlds to socially construct shared meanings of their engagements. By proposing a novel “techno-immersion” as a method of data construction, the researcher joined four child participant–characters in their journey as they traverse from one gaming storyworld to another. Several transactions emerge in such a transmedia engagement, including player-to-player negotiation of playstyle; diverging playstyle away from prescribed gameplay; harnessing the gameplay rules to achieve personal goals in engagement; player-to-player and player-to-media negotiations to create new gameplay; and interaction as means of negotiation. It was also found that child users of mobile games are empowered in harnessing the rules of the game to their personal gaming goals and freeing from the binds that limit them from their engagements, towards becoming fully realized child characters in their transmedia storyworlds.

Abstract

This study evaluates the enforcement of public health protocols in deciding the COVID-19 distribution chain. The evaluation is based on contributions among international students in higher education and examined their experiences and activities engaging in activities against the COVID-19 epidemic. The research focuses on the collaborative activities of students of Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia with Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin State Islamic University Banten, Indonesia. Through observation and direct and online involvement with the community, the study is qualitative and employs an inductive approach. Survey feedback was received in collaboration with five students from each university. This study is qualitative using an inductive approach, through observation and direct interaction with the community. The results show that there are still among the public in Santri Village who ignore the dangerous threat of COVID-19 to their health. The results also found that the community did not fully implement the health protocol. This study proposes a more detailed study of the attitudes of communities ignoring the dangerous threat of disease outbreaks to themselves. This collaboration faces constraints from the point of view of not yet yielding optimal results and requiring more creative efforts to help the community increase their awareness to carry out health protocols in times of disaster.

Abstract

Using community involvement as a lens, this study analyzed the amount of distribution and utilization of a public higher education institution's research outputs in Bicol, Philippines. The Diffusion and Dissemination Theory alongside the use of Knowledge For health (K4Health) of the United States Agency for. International Development (USAID) Model served as the theoretical and conceptual underpinnings of this study that facilitated the analysis of research produced by the institution, its dissemination, the enablers, and barriers, and until utilization. The case study design was used to portray an in-depth analysis of the institution’s situation from research output generation to the enablers and barriers to research utilization. The analysis of graduate student and faculty research revealed a predominance of quantitative descriptive study on the issue of “research in aid of policies.” Documentary evidence on research outputs utilized in policies, programs, and projects is minimal. For the faculty, the enablers on research utilization are promotions and incentives while for the graduate students it is a provision of better library services and research resources. The faculty considered personal and professional issues as barriers while the graduate students cited accessibility of resources, access policies, and professional/work-related issues. Overall, the utilization of research in the institution characterizes Conceptual Research Utilization (CRU) only. In conclusion, the overall dissemination and utilization of research are still beset with leadership, management, access to dissemination tools, research resources, and researcher motivation issues. Due to insufficient attention being placed on research applications to capacitate and empower the community, the approach contributed to low research output utilization. It is suggested that the proposed action plan based on the findings of this study be implemented.

Abstract

The Republic Act 10912, otherwise known as the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Act of 2016, was passed into law to promote and upgrade the practice of healthcare professions in the Philippines. Since the establishment of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Economic Community (AEC), CPD has been considered an area of development through which Filipino professionals are trained to become globally competitive. The Philippine government upholds several agreements made among ASEAN member-states, including recognizing professionals in every ASEAN country, facilitating the mobility of professions within the region, exchanging expertise on standards and qualifications, promoting best practices, and providing valuable opportunities for the training and capacity building. This policy analysis paper evaluated the advantages and disadvantages of the new law in terms of enhancing the capability of professionals through CPD programs. Thus, this article identified the benefits and burden experienced by Filipino healthcare professionals since its enactment. To name a few, the advantages include improving professional competencies, acquiring and refining the necessary knowledge and skills for career advancement, achieving personal and professional growth, and becoming globally competitive while the disadvantages include high cost and expense, inaccessibility and unavailability of CPD programs, additional requirement despite the work overload, lack of support, time constraints among family and loved ones, and limitations of rest and relaxation. Policy directives in addressing these salient issues in the implementation of the law are also recommended. The CPD is indeed a critical factor in ensuring that Filipino healthcare professionals are empowered and globally competitive. In return, their societal contributions will benefit the country’s welfare and economic growth, continued development toward AEC and globalization, and community engagement within the ASEAN region through mobility.

Abstract

This paper discusses the transgender community's fight for justice and developmental rights since 2014 and the response of the Indian Government toward this assertion. The point of choosing 2014 as the starting point is not because the fight for their justice actually begins in this year but because India witnessed an intensification and an increase in public visibility of transgenders’ mobilization following the recognition of members of transgender communities as legal citizens through the landmark Indian Supreme Court (Court) verdict called the National Legal Services Authority Union of India (NALSA). In documenting transgenders’ mobilization and the state's response, the author has substantially relied on secondary sources—newspaper articles and pieces in magazines, blogs, and other online community networks. The narratives of a few transgender activists and intellectuals reaffirm the critiques offered through the media and online community blogs and networks. It gives one the impression of a neoliberal state, which, while willing to protect the constitutional rights of many marginalized groups, finds it hard to fulfill promises that might require the allocation of substantial fiscal and monetary resources. The consistent collective mobilizations of the transgender communities, however, resulted in some concrete gains and developmental rights.

Abstract

The main aim of the study is to identify political public relations approaches that can be applied by the government and other bodies responsible for conducting elections in Nigeria to mitigate and eliminate vote buying. The study adopted a qualitative approach in the contextual analysis of data collected specifically from secondary sources. The results revealed that vote buying has become synonymous with elections in Nigeria. After reviewing some related empirical studies, several factors responsible for vote buying in Nigeria have been identified, including poverty, lack of education, high cost of buying forms to contest elections, and many others. Moreover, where votes are purchased by political parties and candidates, the essence of elections as a credible leadership selection process is often put on the line. Another disadvantage associated with vote buying is that the practice can produce leaders who have questionable characters and are not the actual choice of the masses. Where this practice is condoned, this can lead to bad governance and, ultimately, underdevelopment. Therefore, the study recommends good governance and enough sensitization campaigns as political public relations strategies of combating vote buying in Nigeria.
