Abstract

Characteristics of material can be explored and used as a channel of creativity in designing buildings. Nevertheless, the material exploration process must be able to support efficient use of resources throughout the building's life cycle, starting from material selection, design, construction, maintenance, to demolition. Glued Laminated Timber (Glulam) is an alternative material which is wood-based materials, can be renewed and has low embodied energy. By using channel of creativity (focus on material, the characteristics of glulam are used as an approach to designing a building. The type of building that used as an object of exploration is a simple non-space building, called shelter. The design process is a cyclical series of phases: analysis, synthesis, and evaluation to obtain the most appropriate design. The analysis phase (glulam, shelter, and focus on material) create design criteria that will be used to produce several alternative designs at the synthesis stage. Then, some alternative designs are evaluated at the evaluation stage to get the most appropriate design. This research aims to find out schematic design of shelter in the form of single curves and double curves, composed of 60x60 cm glulam elements joined with notched technique.

Abstract

Geographically Surabaya is crossed by the Kalimas River which runs from south to north with several branches to the east. Therefore the utilization of this river bank has an important role to increase the ecological and visual value of the city while securing the city space assets. Utilization of river banks as active and attractive city parks has been carried out by the Surabaya City Government. Some of them are Taman Prestasi, Taman Eksresi, and Taman Buah. These three parks are both on the banks of the river which are river border spaces which are not allowed to be made buildings. This study aims to identify the typology of space formed in city parks located on the banks of rivers. Then the findings of the resulting typology of hope can be useful in the development of urban parks on the banks of the river. This study found that the geometry of the park formed is a linear park with a linear circulation path as well. Access to the linear park can be from the middle or the end of the park. So that space to attract visitor activity at the ends of the park so it does not become a dead space that is empty of visitors. The types of spaces created at the end of the park include playgrounds, foot reflexology paths, historical monuments, mini libraries and food courts.

Abstract

The discourse on experimental pragmatism, as a paradigm in architecture is very limited. Different than experimental architecture, pragmatism in experimental pragmatism architecture adds a dimension of rational actualization in a design speculation, so that it has the potential to answer the challenges of changing world. This study aims to obtain experimental pragmatism paradigm model in architecture using content analysis method. It was learned that experimental pragmatism (PE)in architecture can be modelled as design paradigm that prioritizes the strength of discovery goals (T) and their actualization in the experiment process (P) and design output (L) according to their attributes. Attributes of ‘process’ are method and parameter (MP) while atributs of ‘outputs’ are characteristic and parameters (SP). Experimental architecture and experimental pragmatism are equally related to aspects of goals, processes and outcomes, but differ in emphasis. Experimental architecture emphasizes aspects of the process, while architectural pragmatism emphasizes aspects of goals that are more related to the non-physical stages of architectural programming.

Abstract

The increasing needs of daily life is certainly involve the market. The market is one of place for business opportunities for traders, the majority of which have small businesses. As the number of consumer demand increases for the necessities of life, then formed a market known as the 'shocking market'. It named “shocking” market because the market is temporary with traders who are always moving locations to find a crowded point of buyers. The activity is only for some time and lasts only a few hours. Usually this shocking market stands at a place that has other functions, such as a sidewalk or open field that has a potential point of bustling buyers in the surrounding environment. The shocking market presence can be assessed through its movement patterns, in which the movement patterns of traders by means of groups and at certain times are the background of this study. The presence of the shock market was reviewed in order to uncover the pattern of movement of traders in the shock market in the Marunda Rusunawa area. The method used is a qualitative rationalistic method, with interview and observation techniques in the field. The results of this study shows the movement pattern of the shocking market traders in Marunda Rusunawa and the reasons behind them moving in groups.

Abstract

Observing from the concept of city identity, Bandung has an identity as a creative city. However, there are still many architectural buildings that do not reflect Bandung's identity as a creative city. Bandung Creative Hub is a center of creativity that is used by the people of Bandung City as a means to create, interact, and collaborate. As a center of creative activity for the city residents, Bandung Creative Hub has certain visual aesthetic elements that can reflect the identity of the City of Bandung as a creative city. This study examines the characteristics of the visual aesthetic elements of Bandung Creative Hub as a building that represents the identity of Bandung City as a creative city. Using a qualitative descriptive method that analyzes Bandung Creative Hub based on visual aesthetic variables, including aspects of composition, cohesiveness, balance, symmetry, proportions, scale, rhythm, contrast and harmony. Visual aesthetic aspects of the Bandung Creative Hub building have attractive characteristics as a representation of Bandung's identity as a creative city. Bandung Creative Hub is an iconic building in its area because of its more prominent characteristics compared to the surrounding buildings.

Abstract

The formation process of a building from the construction phase up to the use of building require much energy. It triggers the happening of global warming. Although the concept of building sustainability applies from now on, but the effect is considerably less, because it doesn’t concern the energy used that consumes on the construction phase. This scientific article is about the effort of reducing the carbon footprint through the concept of carbon neutral that allows the carbon consumption of building returns to zero point by the CO₂ emission reduction in electrical energy consumption. The method is summative evaluation on the architectural work of The Glaxo Smith Kline Carbon Neutral Laboratories for Sustainable Chemistry at Nottingham University to reviewing the electrical energy consumption from the construction phase to the use of the building. The result of this method is proving the building that use photovoltaic technology, which change the sunlight into electrical energy contributes 60,2% of the total electrical energy needs on the effort of CO₂ emission reduction through the systems which the excess energies produced are as carbon credits for “paying back” the carbon used during the construction phase. Through this building, human, nature and technology can walk in harmony without being second-numbered.

Abstract

The economic improvement in the fashion sub-sector was contributed by local small and medium business (SME) brand owners engaged in the fashion sector. Local Pride Movement is a movement to support local brands that will foster the interest of Indonesian people to look at domestic fashion brands. Bandung as Parijs Van Java in Indonesia, produces many local fashion brands, known as the founders of fashion factory outlets (FOF), which are fashion tourism destinations. However, this FOF began to decline with the 4.0 industrial revolution, where shopping was done online, so many home industries did not have a place to display their merchandise. To keep up with online shopping trends, Fashion Outlets are needed that specialize in local brands, with the aim of promoting and increasing the sale and purchase of local industries. The design of this Fashion Outlet uses the theme of Local Pride with the approach of Contemporary Architecture, which elevates the Art Deco style in the current era. Contextualism design method, namely aligning the appearance of the building with the context of the surrounding environment, with the International Style style. The results of the design concept are containers with a variety of atmosphere and local fashion brand shopping experience, such as Shopping Street, Thrifting Market (buying and selling used goods), Indoor Retail, Event and Food Market Floor which is equipped with Local Culinary Stand, auction room and temporary gallery, and Rooftop Retail which is outdoor space on the upper floor.

Abstract

Due to the ozone layer depletion, global warming and climate change, there is a significant increase to reduce carbon emission. Practitioners and academia undertake studies to promote environmentally friendly built environments. Developed countries have established specific standards to achieve a carbon neutral as their commitment to contribute for a better earth condition. Design phases are considered as the early stage where the environmental approach needs to be applied to predict the building performance as soon as possible to maximise the energy efficiency of the proposed building. Another significant factor affecting the building energy performance is climate. Climate becomes the first parameter to generate building proposals as it is contextual to the site. This study aims to assess the application of environmental approach in designing educational building in temperate climate in the early design stage. The combination of design and simulation helps to define the best design proposal to adopt passive design that harvest the environment condition as much as possible to deliver comfort into the building.

Abstract

The Kowloon Hong Kong area is an urban area in Hong Kong which consists of the Kowloon and New Kowloon Peninsula. This area is the city center of Hong Kong which has high mobility, and is rich in activity. The kowloon area has a variety of facilities such as offices, commercial, business, public facilities, residential, conservation and recreation. Most of the regional architecture has an international or modern style that makes the infrastructure of good quality and becomes an attraction for visitors. Kowloon is an area that has the most visitors from Hong Kong residents because there are office areas and tourists because of the many hotel facilities in the Tsim Sha Tsui area, especially shopping areas, international culinary delights, and are the most popular spots for tourists. This study aims to examine the concept of imagability and permeability in the development of the Kowloon area using the Kevin Lynch theory. Imageability is a depiction of the physical qualities of an object or area. Permeability is the quality of accessibility and humanmovement activities in an area. The results of the research show that the Kowloon area has excellent image of the city path, node, landmark, district and edge and permeability regarding block accessibility, lane width, and very good line relations so that it can be assessed that the Kowloon area is a legible area
