Abstract

In this paper, a proposal was made to recreate an energy harvesting technique using biomass energy such as twigs, leaves, wood, paper, and charcoal emitted by burning the said materials and harvest the energy from the released heat. The harvested energy is then converted into a voltage that can be used to charge devices such as mobile phones or even turn on emergency lights. In terms of its application, the system can be used to provide backup power during disaster especially during a flood or other causes of power outages. The system can also be used to charge electronic devices during outdoor activities in remote areas where electricity is inaccessible such as camping or other outdoor activities. This system can produce free electric power that can also be extremely beneficial in third world countries. The cost of the module used is also much cheaper than other existing harvesting methods such as solar panels or water turbines. Based on test data collected using IoT platform, charcoal was determined as the best material in terms of output power generated.

Abstract

Recently, Sensor-Cloud has been widely utilized in various domains, providing real-time monitoring and remote observations. The sensory data is collected from different heterogeneous WSNs, uploaded to the cloud, virtualized, and served for many user applications. However, the survivability of the physical sensors is a challenge, where the nodes are battery-powered and must be utilized wisely. The need is to extend their lifetime and, thus, ensuring cloud functionality and user satisfaction. In this paper, we address the energy-efficiency of the physical sensors in the Sensor-Cloud paradigm. We propose a new scheme based on layered architecture, in which data transmitted to the cloud through a multi-hop routing. The new scheme introduces a novel algorithm to define a set of nodes called the bridge layer, receiving data from the cluster-head-layer and forwards to the sink node layer. Nodes in the bridge layer are selected according to their final score defined based on their energy-efficiency and distance-efficiency as given by the algorithm. Thus, ensuring a robust layer that helps in reducing the transmission energy and extending overall network lifetime. Our simulation results show an improved performance of our scheme over the scenario without the bridge layer, in terms of several parameters we considered.

Abstract

The most dangerous type of cancer suffered by women above 35 years of age is breast cancer. Breast Cancer datasets are normally characterized by missing data, high dimensionality, non-normal distribution, class imbalance, noisy, and inconsistency. Classification is a machine learning (ML) process which has a significant role in the prediction of outcomes, and one of the outstanding supervised classification methods in data mining is Naives Bayess Classification (NBC). Naïve Bayes Classifications is good at predicting outcomes and often outperforms other classifications techniques. Ones of the reasons behind this strong performance of NBC is the assumptions of conditional Independences among the initial parameters and the predictors. However, this assumption is not always true and can cause loss of accuracy. Hoeffding trees assume the suitability of using a small sample to select the optimal splitting attribute. This study proposes a new method for improving accuracy of classification of breast cancer datasets. The method proposes the use of Hoeffding trees for normal classification and naïve Bayes for reducing data dimensionality.

Abstract

The hematocrit (HCT) is the most important measurement in the blood profile. It has been used for early diagnose of the specific blood diseases such as anaemia, leukaemia and malaria. The microhematocrit is the conventional method of measurement of HCT manually which is time-consuming and uncertain due to human error. An automated system for measuring hematocrit will minimize the human-error and the time which will give the ability for medical staff to serve more patients. This paper aims to demonstrate an automated system for measuring the HCT based on microcontroller. The designed system based on Arduino Atmega 2560 microcontroller and combination array of lighting emitting diode and photodetectors. The transmission and the absorption characteristics of the red light (660nm) through the centrifuged blood sample in a capillary tube are calculated and used to determine the HCT. The outputs are analyzed to determine the haemoglobin (HB) and packed cell volume (PCV). The significant correlation (r=0.9856, p=3.106*10-4) between the PCV readings of the proposed system and the conventional method has been observed. The most important finding is the precise of PCV and HB readings for the proposed system compared with previous automated methods as well as the conventional method have been obtained.

Abstract

In this research, the performance of the 19 nm single gate MOSFET is enhanced through the implementation of the high permittivity dielectric material. The MOSFET scaling trends necessities in device dimensions can be satisfied through the implementation of the high-K dielectric materials in place of the SiO2. Therefore, the 19 nm n-channel MOSFET device with different High-K dielectric materials are implemented and its performance improvement has also been analysed. Virtual fabrication is exercised through ATHENA module from Silvaco TCAD tool. Meanwhile, the device characteristic was utilized by using an ATLAS module. The aforementioned materials have also been simulated and compared with the conventional gate oxide SiO2 for the same structure. At the end, the results have proved that Titanium oxide (TiO2) device is the best dielectric material with a combination of metal gate Tungsten Silicides (WSix). The drive current (ION) of this device (WSix/TiO2) is 587.6 µA/um at 0.534 V of threshold voltage (VTH) as opposed to the targeted 0.530 V predicted, as well as a relatively low IOFF that is obtained at 1.92 pA/µm. This ION value meets the minimum requirement predicted by International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductor (ITRS) 2013 prediction for low performance (LP) technology.

Abstract

The recent advances in technology, the increased dependence on electrical energy and the emergence of the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) were all factors in the increased need for smart, efficient and reliable energy systems. This introduced the concept of the Smart Grid (SG). A SG is a potential replacement for older power grids, capable of adapting and distributing energy based on demand. SG systems are complex. They combine various components and have high requirements for real time reliable operation. This paper attempts to provide an overview of SG systems, by outlining SG architecture and various components. It also introduces communication technologies, integration and network management tools that are involved in SG systems. In addition, the paper highlights challenges and issues that need to be addressed for a successful implementation of SG. Finally, we provide suggestions for future research directions.

Abstract

Hadith is the second source of Islamic law after Qur’an which make many types and references of hadith need to be studied. However, there are not many Muslims know about it and many even have difficulties in studying hadiths. This study aims to build a hadith search engine from reliable source by utilizing Information Retrieval techniques. The structured representation of the text that used is Bag of Word (1-term) with the Weighted Inverse Document Frequency (WIDF) method to calculate the frequency of occurrence of each term before being converted in vector form with the Vector Space Model (VSM). Based on the experiment results using 380 texts of hadith, the recall value of WIDF and VSM is 96%, while precision value is just around 35.46%. This is because the structured representation for text that used is bag of words (1-gram) that can not maintain the meaning of text well).

Abstract

Many important subtle changes in the environment are invisible to the naked human eyes. These subtle changes occur because of colour variations, such as blood flow in a human face that leads to face colour change, or motion variations, such as vena movement under human skin and vibration of buildings. The human eye requires optical microscopes to detect these variations. Alternatively, new technologies, such as high-speed imagery and computer processing, can be used to detect these variations. These computerised microscopes depend on computation rather than optical amplification to amplify subtle colour and motion changes in videos. The most popular technique to achieve computation-based microscope is the Eulerian video magnification (EVM). However, several challenges in EVM still need to be solved to meet the requirements of real time and video quality. This paper presents a comprehensive study of EVM methods and reviews the related literature. The strengths and drawbacks of existing works are discussed, and the important research fields and challenges in the area of EVM are concluded.

Abstract

This work has presented the interaction between tangential/sagittal cylindrical thin lens in the titled plane parallel crystal. Stability criterion parameters are measured under the control of curvature radius of a spherical mirror, the thickness of the tilted plane crystal, the refractive index of tilted plane crystal, the thickness for a plate of matter and phase angle of the sagittal cylindrical thin lens. Beam radius waist is plotted against the focal length of the tangential cylindrical thin lens. Focal length for both thin lens in resonator crystal is optimized to upgrade the resonator system operation efficiency.

Abstract

Nowadays, the digitalization of the production-based industries is driven by emerging technologies tools. The concept of lean manufacturing (LM) towards Industry 4.0 was developed where data analytics of engineering processes are analyzed and connected to reduce wastes. Many authors discuss about the benefits of extending data analytics as a method to support decision. However, the absence of comprehensive framework on how to embed LM and IT tools has existed as a new challenge. The aim of the research is to initiate a framework of model driven decision support system (MD-DSS) where data simulation and communication technologies are accompanied for manufacturing process improvement. In this research, Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) data was captured through internet networking system and simulate to predict the improvement output. The main information flow route within MD-DSS are demonstrated in detail to show how decision-making process. To illustrate the applicability of the MD-DSS, it has been applied at food industry in Malaysia. The results show that the MD-DSS can easily be adopted in factories facilited with internet network to support decision-making of improvement plan activities.
