Abstract

Evolutionary computation and swarm intelligence meta-heuristics are exceptional instances that environment has been a never-ending source of creativeness. The behavior of bees, bacteria, glow-worms, fireflies and other beings have stirred swarm intelligence scholars to create innovative optimization algorithms. This paper proposes the Meerkat Clan Algorithm (MCA) that is a novel swarm intelligence algorithm resulting from watchful observation of the Meerkat (Suricata suricatta) in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. This animal shows an exceptional intelligence, tactical organizational skills, and remarkable directional cleverness in its traversal of the desert when searching for food. A Meerkat Clan Algorithm (MCA) proposed to solve the optimization problems through reach the optimal solution by efficient way comparing with another swarm intelligence. Traveling Salesman Problem uses as a case study to measure the capacity of the proposed algorithm through comparing its results with another swarm intelligence. MCA shows its capacity to solve the Traveling Salesman’s Problem. Its dived the solutions group to sub-group depend of meerkat behavior that gives a good diversity to reach an optimal solution. Paralleled with the current algorithms for resolving TSP by swarm intelligence, it has been displayed that the size of the resolved problems could be enlarged by adopting the algorithm proposed here.

Abstract

Arabic is a broadly utilized alphabetic composition framework on the planet, and it has 28 essential letters. The letters in order was first used to compose messages in Arabic, most prominently the Qur'an the holy book of Islam. However, Arabic language has diacritics in the word or letters which are not something extra or discretionary to the language, rather they are a vital piece of it. By changing some diacritics may change both the syntax and semantics of a word by turning a word into another. However, the current researches address the foreground image and consider the diacritics as noises or secondary images. Thus, it is not suitable for Arabic handwritten. The diacritics will be removed from the image and this will lead to losing some good features.   Furthermore, to extract the diacritics, the region-based segmentation technique is used. The image will be measured based on the region properties by first finding the connected component in binary image, and then we will determine the best area range measurement in that region for each image. The proposed technique region based has been tested in nine different images with different handwritten style, and successfully extracted secondary foreground images (diacritics) for each image.

Abstract

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) is an intelligent system which has the capability to recognize the character on vehicle number plate. It is a combination of hardware and software designed to offer the optimum reliability. Since the past decades, many researchers have been proposed to recognize the vehicle number plate and implemented it in various access control, law enforcement and security, including parking management system, toll gate access, border access, tracking of stolen vehicles and traffic violations (speed trap, illegal parking, etc). However, previous researches implemented ANPR system on personal computer (PC) with high resolution camera and high computational capability. On the other hand, not many researches have been conducted on the design of ANPR in Android smartphone platform which has limited camera resolution and limited computational power. The main challenges of implementation ANPR algorithm on smartphone are higher coding efficiency, lower computational complexity, and higher the scalability. The objectives of this research is to design ANPR on Android smartphone, including graphical user interface (GUI) design, process design, and database design. First, a comprehensive survey on the pre-processing, segmentation, and optical character recognition is conducted. Secondly, proposed system development and algorithm implementation is explained in more details. Results show that our proposed design can be implemented effectively in Android smartphone platform.

Abstract

Crude oil is considered as a crucial energy source in modern days. Consequently, the fluctuation of crude oil prices can cause a significant impact on economic activities. Researchers have proposed many hybrid forecasting models on top of single forecasting methods which are utilized to predict crude oil prices movement more accurately. Nevertheless, many limitations still existed in hybrid forecasting models and models that can predict crude oil prices as accurate as possible is required. The motivations of this review paper are to identify and assess the mostly used crude oil prices forecasting methods and to analyse their current limitations. 12 studies that used “decomposition-and-ensemble” framework was selected for review. Wavelet transform is identified as the mostly used data decomposition method while some limitations have been recognized. Future researches should include more studies to further elucidate the limitations in existing forecasting method so that subsequent forecasting methods can be improved.

Abstract

This paper presents the effects of parameters variation over the speed response of vector controlled induction motor drives for high performance applications. The design and simulation of fuzzy logic controller are considered based on design case constant parameter fuzzy logic (DCCPFL) controller. The scaling factors for DCCPFL controller are calculated based on identified motor parameter. The performance of the DCCPFL is compared with conventional PI controller. Three different parameters is tested under no-load and loaded conditions namely rotor resistance, inertia and self-inductance. From the simulation results, it is proved that the DCCPFL have better performance in term of different parameter variations and also load disturbances. Thus the DCCPFL is appropriate to replace the conventional PI for high performance of induction motor drives system.

Abstract

A real-time tracking system with the ability of tracking the moving target using cam-shift algorithm is designed. The basic technique of the stereo vision system is discussed. The architecture, the hardware component and the interface of the tracking system is analyzed. Two digital cameras are fit on the cradle head, and the electric pan/tilt/zoom controller has two independent degrees of freedom: horizontal rotation and pitch. The video signals are captured by two digital cameras, and then the position of the target is calculated. The electric pan/tilt/zoom controller is moved in order to make the target always in the surveillance window. This active system extends vision coverage over wide areas to get more detail information.  DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v11i11.3505

Abstract

Focused on revealing variations of dynamic characteristics of an auto-leveling system used in mobile elevating work platforms (MEWP) at large height, a unified mathematical model composited of a series of sub-models was built for the leveling systems. An effect on dynamic characteristics including the fast response and relative stability from varying-parameters was investigated. Results displayed the displacement-angle factor changing with work-conditions tended to cause fluctuations of the stability, while enlarging the amplifier gain would accelerate system response. Increasing the area ratio was conducive to leveling stability to be reinforced, but lead a different response speed for forward process or reverse leveling, which was harmful to overall stability. The findings would provide essential theory guidance for the design and manufacture of the leveling system devices of high altitude platform. DOI : http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v12i5.4914
