Abstract

VRLA can be the energy storing device of the HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle), photovoltaic system and so on. The most important factor that restricts the improvement of these fields is the service lifetime of the battery cannot reach the expectation. In the charging process, traditional charging method has serious polarization phenomenon. It will decrease its service life. Aimed at the purpose of reducing the polarization phenomenon, this paper proposed the changing current depolarization pulse charging method which is combining the dynamic model of the battery on the basis of analyzing the existential issues in the pulse charging method. By building the hardware circuit to achieve the function and verify their feasibility. The results indicate that, compared with pulse charging method, the new method makes battery fully charged in shorter time obviously and the temperature of batteries rise more slowly. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v10i7.1560

Abstract

The use of distributed generation (DG) within distribution systems has increased for the last two decades due to worldwide increase in demand for electricity and governmental policy change from “conventional” energy to “green” energy. High levels of penetration of DG have many significant benefits but also come with many drawbacks such as voltage drop and power losses. This study presents the impact of DG at different locations in a distribution feeder in terms of the feeder voltage profile. A radial distribution system is simulated using PSCAD/EMTDC simulation software while changing the size and location of DG in the system. The obtained results are used for better understanding on the impact of DG on voltage profile in radial distribution feeder.

Abstract

Street lighting is a component that require an efficient energy management system for comprehensive energy savings. It should provide ultimate comfort and safety to road users that contribute to the stability of economy and social of the country as well to the smart city development. Currently many street lighting especially in Malaysia, which is ON in the evening and OFF before the sun sets without taking into consideration the ambient brightness and also the number of vehicles. This condition may increase the use of energy as well as dangerous to motorist. Thus this Ambient Street Lighting project was developed using embedded-based Arduino microcontroller for lighting management based on the circumstances surrounding of the road. A threshold value is set based on a reading of the actual situation in order to test the functionality of the prototype. The Ambient Street Lighting prototype have reacted with success towards surrounding brightness/darkness and number of cars passing by on the street.

Abstract

The energy crisis has got the serious attention of experts since the middle19th century. Many efforts with significant progresses has been yielded to obtain its solution, such as technology development and diversification of primary energy sources, but the threat of the energy crisis has not been able to be avoided. Early tahun 1990, attention of experts are focused on energy savings, operating efficiencies and transparency. As a result, they have recommended changing the electric power business of the monopoly system to the market system, competition. In a competitive system, the problems will be more complex, especially in the energy price through optimization. One of the popular energy pricing methods today is LBMP, Locational Based Marginal Price, which has been successfully applied by New York, US. Generally, it is determined through ED, Economic Dispatch, calculations. In this case, Operator must do the complicated adjustments, especially for congestion conditions, so that thier results can be applied to the network. The simulation results, both heavy and light loads, showed that the OPF with step reduction can work well. Comparing with ED has to done some adjustments because a few contraints were out of their limits.

Abstract

All digital successive approximation register-controlled delay-lock loops (SAR DLL) are widely used in system-on-chip to solve the clock generation and skew problems for their fast-locking characteristic. However, the conventional SAR DLL has the dead lock problem. So many improved solutions are proposed to solve the dead lock problem. Based on the resettable delay line, improved SAR controller and phase comparator are depicted. By these, a harmonic-free and fast-locking all digital SAR DLL without dead lock is implemented. Post-layout transistor-level simulation results show that the lock-in and relock-in time are both within N cycles of input clock for N-bit SAR controller. Abstract

Depression, anxiety and stress are not trivial conditions applicable for only the weak-hearted. They can be inflicted by anyone of all age groups, gender, race and social status. While some are courageous to acknowledge their condition, others shy away in shame or denial. In this paper, we proposed a “proactive” approach to detecting candidates of depression, anxiety and stress in an unobtrusive manner by tapping into what Malaysians tweet in Malay language. From this preliminary study, we constructed 165 Malay layman terms which describe depression, anxiety or stress as identified in M-DASS-42 scale. Since Twitter is an informal platform, construction of Malay layman terms is an essential step to the detection of candidates. Our study on 1,789 Malay tweets discovered 6 Twitter users as potential candidates, having high frequency of tweets with any of the layman terms. We can conclude that using tweets can be useful in unobtrusively detecting candidates of depression, anxiety or stress. This paper also identifies open research areas.

Abstract

Exchange rate forecasting is important to represent the expectation of exchange rates future values. The forecasting task is due to the economic factor and the historical data used to forecast are exposed to uncertainty and observational error during data collection. The existing auto regression model only deals with uncertainty exist in the model, not in the data preparation. Uncertainties may contained in the data input and should be treated during data preparation which is an early stage of forecasting process. To date, only few researches discuss intensely on a fuzzy data preparation. However, data treatment during data preparation is important to reduce model’s error due to uncertainty problem. Hence, this paper presents an approach to construct Triangular Fuzzy Number to handle uncertainty in data during data preparation. As the Triangular Fuzzy Number is often used to represent uncertain information in a form of interval, this study proposed a procedure to construct Triangular Fuzzy Number from single point data. In this study, the Triangular Fuzzy Number is built in a form of symmetric triangular with 1%, 3% and 5% spread value. Autoregressive model is then used to forecast the exchange rate of Association of South East Asian Nation (ASEAN) countries. The result in this study shows that the forecasting exchange rate is significantly important to trace the movement of ASEAN countries exchange rates and beneficial in forecasting planning.

Abstract

One of the effective ways to diagnose various respiratory diseases is using spirometry test. Good spirometer comes with excellent graphical user interface. Spirometer is used to measure lung parameters such as Forced Expiratory Volume in the first second and the sixth seconds (FEV1 and FEV6). This paper presents an algorithm with Graphical User Interface (GUI) for characterization of respiratory conditions using LabVIEW Software. The whole spirometry system consists of a breathing circuitry with pressure sensor and a data acquisition board (NI sbRIO FPGA board). Results obtained from three different volunteers with different health performances are also presented in this paper. The FEV1/FEV6 ratio of a healthy volunteer is 81.1%, an asthma volunteer is 72.04%, and suspected bronchitis volunteer is 33.4%. Based on these results, the unhealthy volunteers tend to have smaller value of FEV1 with lower area under the curve when compared to healthy volunteer.

Abstract

The effect of time of day and month on the efficient conversion of solar energy to electrical energy using a polycrystalline (PV) module in calabar was studied. A KT-908 precision digital hygrometer and thermometer, and a M890C+ digital multimeter were used in the process. Results obtained shows that photovoltaic produce different levels of peak efficiencies at different times of the day for different months due to the difference in sunrise and sunset times for the months. The results also indicated that photovoltaics will be more efficient in months with low average relative humidity couple with low panel temperature. A peak efficiency of 77% at 12:30 in the month of April was observed before dropping to 73% at 12:00 in the month of May, indicating that there might be further drop in efficiency as we proceed further into the year. Results also show that photovoltaics are more efficient before noon in the month of May than in April while the reverse will be observed in the afternoon.

Abstract

In order to improve accuracy and robustness of the lane detection in complex conditions, such as the shadows and illumination changing, a novel detection algorithm was proposed based on machine learning. After pretreatment, a set of haar-like filters were used to calculate the eigenvalue in the gray image f(x,y) and edge e(x,y). Then these features were trained by using improved boosting algorithm and the final class function g(x) was obtained, which was used to judge whether the point x belonging to the lane or not. To avoid the over fitting in traditional boosting, Fisher discriminant analysis was used to initialize the weights of samples. After testing by many road in all conditions, it showed that this algorithm had good robustness and real-time to recognize the lane in all challenging conditions. DOI : http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v12i2.3923
