Abstract

Most numerical studies on flow over buildings simplify the geometry of the roof and assume that it is flat. This may lead to misrepresentation of the flow as the roof of actual buildings contains some sort of roughness. In this study, the flow over the administrative building of Universiti Tenaga Nasional is investigated for multidirectional flow conditions. The actual topology of the building is gridded and simulated using the steady-state Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation. Four points at the top of the building are identified and the wind statistics at these designated locations at three different heights are investigated. The optimal location with the highest average wind speed and consistent wind speeds for all wind angles is identified and is earmarked as a potential location to install the wind turbine.

Abstract

The design of directive antenna using Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) superstrate is proposed in this project. The suitable design FSS as superstrate layer is very important to enhance the high directivity and narrow bandwidth on the antenna. By using the FSS layer to design the superstrate layer, there are able to determine the reflection coefficient accordingly to the desired frequency.

Abstract

This study evaluate effectiveness of learning Linear Algebra using gamification strategy. In this study, gamification with storytelling strategy is used as teaching tools to attract student to learn Linear Algebra. This study using Polytechnic Malaysia syllabus with focus group of Diploma students for semester three (Mechanical Engineering) and semester four (Electrical Engineering) for two topics; Matrix and Numerical Method. They are five methods of calculation simultaneous linear equations which is ‘Inverse’, ‘Cramer's Rule’, ‘Gauss Elimination’, ‘Lower Upper Doolittle’ and ‘Lower Upper Crout’. They are three main phases to develop this gamification; Pedagogy Phase, Design Phase and Evaluation Phase. Mixed methods approach combining quantitative (survey) and qualitative (Electroencephalogram) is used to evaluate students learning process using Linear Algebra gamification application. The findings of the five items surveyed showed that the acceptance of the prototype of the Linear Algebra Gamification Application was very encouraging from a total of 104 students. This is because all 38 questions for the five items earn a median of four and this indicates the majority of students choose “Agree” and “Strongly Agree”. The findings also show the percent “Agree” and “Strongly Agree” for all questions having a high percentage of between 61.5 and 94.2. This shows more than half satisfied and likes to use the Linear Algebra Gamification Application prototype. With the development of the Linear Algebra Gamification Application prototype, it is hoped that the use of learning based can be extended to a variety of subjects as well as topics to make the learning process more interesting and fun as well as helping to motivate students to learn

Abstract

on the analysis of operation principles of conventional self-exciting electronic ballast, the cause of high switching loss has been researched. In order to reduce switch temperature and increase the reliability of the whole circuit, drive circuit of self-exciting electronic ballast has been improved to achieve soft switch. Circuit simulations and experimental results are coincided with the analysis of theory. In the end of this paper, the design procedure and winding method of self-excited transformer are introduced.

Abstract

Object descriptor has become one of the key factors for a robust and accurate tracker. In this paper, we propose an object descriptor combining color information and motion detection. A tracked object can be described by its hue histogram excluding the background pixels around the tracked object for restraining the disturbing of complex background environments. During the tracking process, we model the object descriptor by Gaussian Mixture Model for adapting the appearance variation of the tracked object. Tracking experiments in the frame of particle filter show that our proposed object descriptor can effectively improve the robustness and accuracy of object tracking under the situations of complex environments and appearance variations. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v11i6.2616

Abstract

Recent studies have shown that network coding can improve the performance of the distributed storage systems. However, most of these studies are theoretical which mainly focus on the bandwidth efficiency. This paper aims to provide a practical system, so NCStorage, a network-coding-based distributed storage system, is implemented. NCStorage implements network coding on the Internet, so users from all over the world can access it. Unlike traditional technologies such as erasure coding and fountain coding, re-encoding operation at storage servers is required by NCStorage. We observe that, benefiting from the re-encoding at the storage servers, the required repair bandwidth employed to repair a failed storage server is reduced, the computation overhead is balanced, and the security is enhanced. Both the encoding at the clients and the re-encoding at the storage servers are based on a deterministic algorithm. Finally, we deploy 8 storage servers in different places to evaluate the performance of the NCStorage, and the experimental results validate the analysis results.  DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v11i12.3709

Abstract

Nowadays we all are surrounded by Big data. The term ‘Big Data’ itself indicates huge volume, high velocity, variety and veracity i.e. uncertainty of data which gave rise to new difficulties and challenges. Big data generated may be structured data, Semi Structured data or unstructured data. For existing database and systems lot of difficulties are there to process, analyze, store and manage such a Big Data. The Big Data challenges are Protection, Curation, Capture, Analysis, Searching, Visualization, Storage, Transfer and sharing. Map Reduce is a framework using which we can write applications to process huge amount of data, in parallel, on large clusters of commodity hardware in a reliable manner. Lot of efforts have been put by different researchers to make it simple, easy, effective and efficient. In our survey paper we emphasized on the working of Map Reduce, challenges, opportunities and recent trends so that researchers can think on further improvement.

Abstract

The advent of advanced technology has led to the increase of electricity demand in most countries in the world. This phenomenon has made the power system network operate close to the stability limit. Therefore, the power utilities are looking forward to the solution to increase the loadability of the existing infrastructure. Integration of renewable energy into the grid such as Distributed Generation Photovoltaic (DGPV) can be one of the possible solutions. In this paper, Chaotic Mutation Immune Evolutionary Programming (CMIEP) algorithm is used as the optimization method while the chaotic mapping was employed in the local search for optimal location and sizing of DGPV. The chaotic local search has the capability of finding the best solution by increasing the possibility of exploring the global minima. The proposed technique was applied to the IEEE 30 Bus RTS with variation of load. The simulation results are compared with Evolutionary Programming (EP)  and it is found that CMIEP performed better in most of the cases.

Abstract

The congestion of road traffic is one of the most problems facing the ambulance transportation to provide fast healthcare service for patient. In this work, ambulance tracking with messages transfer system has been designed and implemented such that a central monitoring and tracking unit can observe ambulance using MQTT IoT protocol. Where each vehicle is occupied with an intelligent embedded system (Raspberry Pi) unit. When an ambulance is being in the road, it will communicate with other vehicle or road traffic by means of CoAP IoT protocol as a direct device to device communication. The proposed system has been designed such that driver use voice chat and the system are completely hand free. The voice message is being transfer into text by using speech recognition based Google API library, and then the received text message is converted again to speech by using text to speech algorithm. An encryption–decryption process-based stream cipher has been used. The message between IoT nodes has been encrypted using One Time Pad (OTP) and DNA computing. Furthermore, the required key sequence was generated using a linear feedback shift register (LFSR) as a pseudo number key generator. This key sequence was combined to generate a unique key for each message.

Abstract

Glucose concentration measurement is the basis of noninvasive detection of blood glucose concentration. It is significant in scientific research. In this study, Near Infrared Spectrum (NIRS) and regression analysis methodology were combined to measure the glucose concentration. The spectrum of glucose solutions was obtained with the Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectrometer, and then the data was used for regression analysis. In addition, the method of Paritial Least Squares (PLS) was used to achieve principle components and various spectral preprocessing methods were discussed. During PLS modeling, the Savitzky-Golay could improve the Prediction Residual Error Sum of Squares (PRESS) within 6%. The experiment results demonstrate that NIRS has the potential for the measurement of glucose solution. DOI : http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v12i4.4060
