Abstract

Compared to a time-based maintenance schedule, condition-based maintenance provides better diagnostic information on the health condition of the different wind turbine components and subsystems. Rather than using an offline condition monitoring technique, which require the WT to be taken out of service, online condition monitoring does not require any interruption on the WT operation. The online condition monitoring system uses different types of sensors such as vibration, acoustic, temperature, current/voltage etc. Using a machine learning approach, we aim to establish a data driven fault prognosis framework. Instead of traditional wired communications, wireless communication systems such as Wireless Sensor Network have the advantages of easier installation and lower capital cost. We propose the use of WSN for collecting and transmitting the condition monitoring data to enhance the reliability of Wind Parks. Using data driven approach the collective health of the WP can be represented based on the condition of the individual wind turbines, which can be used for predicting the Remaining Useful Life of the system.

Abstract

Power System Protection is very important in electrical power system as it minimizes power supply interruption to customers, and also prevents damages to electrical equipment.  Lately, renewable energy (RE) penetration in power system helps to support and fulfil the increasing demand of electricity to customers. However, the contribution of power from RE such as solar photovoltaic (PV) will increase the fault level and lead to reverse power flow; thus, it will affect power system protection reliability. This paper focuses on evaluating the reliability of differential protection relay during steady state, internal and external faults conditions when the power system is without and with solar PV penetration. Steady state and three-phase symmetrical line fault will be simulated in IEEE 39 bus test system using power system simulation for engineering (PSS®E) software.

Abstract

Image encryption is an important area in visual cryptography that helps in protecting images when shared through internet. There is lot of cryptography algorithms applied for many years in encrypting images. In the recent years, artificial intelligence techniques are combined with cryptography algorithms to support image encryption. Some of the benefits that artificial intelligence techniques can provide are prediction of possible attacks on cryptosystem using machine learning algorithms, generation of cryptographic keys using optimization algorithms, etc. Computational intelligence algorithms are popular in enhancing security for image encryption. The main computational intelligence algorithms used in image encryption are neural network, fuzzy logic and genetic algorithm. In this paper, a review is done on computational intelligence-based image encryption methods that have been proposed in the recent years and the comparison is made on those methods based on their performance on image encryption.

Abstract

This article presents an improved direct torque control (DTC) technique with space vector modulation (SVM) for a five-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) using a sliding mode speed control (SMC).The proposed control scheme of the five-phase PMSM combines the advantages of SMC control and the SVM algorithm. The SMC method insensitive to uncertainties, in particular external disturbances and parameter variations. In this paper, the SMC controller is used to control the rotor speed of the five-phase PMSM based on DTC-SVM. The rotor speed response, torque and stator flux are determined and compared with traditional control method. The simulations results confirm the validity and effectiveness of the proposed control technique in terms of performance and robustness against machine parameter variations (inertia variation). The efficiency of the proposed method applied on the five-phase PMSM is verified by the MATLAB/Simulink.

Abstract

Monomodal biometry does not constitute an effective measure to meet the desired performance requirements for large-scale applications, due to limita-tions such as noisy data, restricted degree of freedom and unacceptable error rates. Some of these problems can be solved through multimodal biometric systems that involve using a combination of two or more biometric modali-ties in a single identification system. Identification based on multiple biomet-rics represents an emerging trend. The reason for combining different modal-ities is to improve the recognition rate. In practice, multi-biometric aims to reduce the false acceptance ratio (FAR) and false rejection ratio (FRR) which are two standard metrics widely used in the accuracy of biometric sys-tems. In this paper, we will examine the different possible scenario in multi-modal biometric systems using RFID, fingerprint and facial recognition, that can be adopted to merge information and improve the overall accuracy of the system.

Abstract

Because oceans account for 70.8% of the Earth's surface, various internet of things (IoT) applications for the marine industry are being researched and developed. The success of an IoT technology in the maritime industry depends on the location tracking technology used and how far it can communicate. In this study, we implemented a marine observation system using low power wide area (LPWA) communication technology to provide maritime IoT services. The proposed marine observation system consists of a marine IoT module and an ocean observation monitoring system. The information collected is GPS information and communication signal reception strength. As a result of an actual field test, we were able to obtain the distance to the gateway by measuring the position through the marine IoT module, and we found that the intensity of communication was proportional to the change in sea level.

Abstract

This paper analyzed the new compact design and negative refractive index (NRI) metamaterial for wideband applications. The proposed metamaterial exhibits NRI and wideband characteristics of the x-axis wave propagation. It displayed the NRI property at the frequency of 1.54 GHz and wideband from 1.26 GHz to 7.08 GHz frequency (L, S, and C band). Moreover, the response of the 1×2 horizontal and 2×1 vertical array structure showed the wideband frequency in the 7.17 GHz to 13.62 GHz and 1.46 GHz to 9.53 GHz, respectively. Electromagnetic simulation software called CST has been used to design the metamaterial unit cell. The metamaterial has been displayed the multi-band characteristics such as L, S, C, X and Ku bands with negative index material properties.

Abstract

In rural Sarawak, the internet accessibility is low due to unreliable power grids to support telecommunication network and large geographical area. The risk for network infrastructure implementation is high for internet service provider (ISP), thus more practical and accurate cost estimation methods should be used. This paper reviews different types of cost estimation methods and the accuracy and feasibility of each methods are discussed and compared for network infrastructure implementation in rural Sarawak. The unique characteristics of rural Sarawak are considered in this work, including the topography, development of rural areas and acceptance of new technologies. Different cost estimation methods are identified for different senarios and availability of data.

Abstract

Smart home appliances scheduling, employing optimization optimization algorithms to reduce utility costs, is gaining traction under the introduction of time-of-use tariffs and the development of internet of things (IoT). The prior electricity cost reduction scheduling algorithms, however, causes substantial discomfort to users for restricting users from using the appliances at their desired times. To address the problem, a novel versatile systematic method is proposed by pricing the mismatch of proposed schedule with users’ usage preference pattern to quantify discomfort, coupled with comfort-cost weight factor. The method employing customizable user preference patterns, user-perceived pricing of mismatch and user-specified comfort-savings weightage, not only captures the complex dependence of comfort to individual preference, but the evolution with time by continuous user survey. The proposed method, formulated to be simple enough to be applied on an Excel spreadsheet, demonstrates substantial reduction of electricity cost and users’ discomfort simultaneously. Studies on the algorithm found it to be robust against of fluctuations of parameters, with optimization performance comparable to prior work. The work demonstrates that despite the complex nature of comfort to users’ behaviors and perception, simple pricing surveys can be used to accurately quantify, compare and optimize users’ comfort together with economic savings.

Abstract

Solar power is mainly harnessed from photovoltaic (PV) panels which are arranged in multiple arrays in a solar farm or solar system. Though, power generation from PV solar system is characterised by uncertain efficiency, many countries with high insolation prefer solar as an alternative way of generating clean energy. However, the efficiency of energy generated from PV panels is affected by the accumulation of dust and debris, even on one panel in an array. This condition leads to the need for regular cleaning of the surface of PV panels. Current labour-based cleaning methods for photovoltaic arrays are costly in time, water and energy usage as well as lacking in automation capabilities. To overcome this problem, a fully automatic solar panel cleaning system with/without water is proposed. Hence, in this paper, the design of a robot for automated cleaning of the surface of PV panel is presented. The design utilizes an Arduino controller system to control the robot movement during the cleaning process. In addition, it is equipped with two rough sponge and a water pump system that can be used to clean dust or debris found on PV panel surfaces. The efficiency of the PV panels before and after the cleaning process is also observed. The result shows that the developed solar panel cleaning robot is able to clean the panel effectively and increase back the output current as well as the maximum power of the panel by 50%, after the dust on the PV panel is cleaned.
