Abstract

This study presents an amended unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) which explores key factors affecting Malaysian consumers ' willingness to accept mobile-commerce. A questionnaire survey has been used to collect information from 400 Malaysian smartphone users using a random stratified sample and analyzed using structural equation modelling (SEM); with the use of Smart PLS 3.0. Results show that acceptance and use of mobile-commerce services can also be predicted by the behavioural intentions of users, whose performance expectancy, efforts expectations, social effects, mobility, personal innovations and perceived trust are significantly affected. From these variables, perceived trust is the most significant determinant that directly affects behavioural intention to use mobile-commerce services in Malaysia. It is then followed by mobility, personal innovation, social influence, performance expectancy then effect expectancy. Facilitating Conditions and moderating variables such as gender, age, education, income, marital status, experience and payment have no significant effect on Behavioral Intention to use mobile-commerce services in Malaysia. In conclusion, this study shows that behavioural intention and the use of mobile commerce services in Malaysia have a direct effect. The study will help dealers to avoid spending thousands of dollars on investments that have little impact on whether the customer is embracing and using mobile-commerce. The study also provides quantified indicators and offers a framework for the understanding of the Malaysia mobile-commerce system. The report concludes with a study of the effects of the research findings and provides recommendations for future research.

Abstract

In long-haul optical communication systems consisting of single-mode fiber spans and fiber amplifiers, such as an erbium-doped fiber amplifier, signal distortion causes performance to deteriorate because of group velocity dispersion and fiber nonlinearity. A combination of dispersion management and optical phase conjugation is an effective technique of compensating for the distortion. In an optical link configured with this combination, the dispersion map mainly affects the compensation for the distorted optical signals. Improvements in system performance have been reported for various types of dispersion maps. In this study, a symmetric type of dispersion map with respect to the midway optical phase conjugator is proposed. The effect of the proposed dispersion maps on the compensation for the distorted 24 channel × 40 Gbps wavelength-division-multiplexed signals was assessed through numerical simulation. It was confirmed that antipodal-type dispersion maps are most appropriate for the compensation, as well as for the flexibility of the link configuration.

Abstract

In general, the extraction of the vehicle plate is a previous step of plate recognition, and it actively studied for several decades. Plate localization is used in various security and traffic applications. In this paper, the proposed method is efficient to localize a plate for the multinational countries. The proposed method consists of three levels. The first level is the preprocessing that contains several steps. The digital camera capture images have been taken about twenty meters from the car with zooming two to three meters. Images are resampled using the zooming technique (bilinear interpolation) that makes the dimension of image (1024 x 768) pixels. The resampled images are resized to (940x 730). These images are converted to grayscale (green channel), and the bilateral filter is applied for removing noise. The second level is plate detection that adopts morphological operations, image subtraction, and vertical edge detection (Sobel). At the last Connected component analysis and Hough transform are used. The third level is the Deskew plate that notifies the plate may skew so that Hough transform is used to detect the largest line segment. Then, the images are rotated using bilinear interpolation. About 860 images are tested for different countries (Iraq, Belarus, Armenia, Hungary), and the accuracy is 98.99 % for extraction of the plate and 100% for the Deskew plate. Thus, the proposed system shows high efficiency in achievement.

Abstract

A multiband and wideband frequency reconfigurable antenna is presented. A wideband from 3.5 GHz to 9.0 GHz is achieved by introducing one stripline in the middle of a slotted bowtie antenna, whereas multiband is obtained by integrating an additional two slotted arms at the end of bowtie-shaped. As a result, the antenna operated at multiband mode (1.7 GHz and 2.6 GHz) and wideband mode (3.5 GHz to 9.0 GHz) simultaneously. The reconfigurability of the antenna is attained through switches. Five states are achieved with three  pairs of switches configurations. All results are presented and discussed, including S11, current distribution, radiation pattern, and gain. The antenna is suitable to be used in multimode communication systems.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the study of the asynchronous generator self-excited during operation in isolated mode. It concerns the analysis of a robust control of the asynchronous machine in order to improve the quality of the electrical energy produced in different environmental circumstances, and to promote the use of renewable energies in rural areas to improve education, the supply of drinking water, livestock and agriculture, access to information and communication. The present work concerns the description and modeling of the various mechanical parts of the wind turbine. It also tackles the steady-state and transient modeling of the asynchronous generator under self-excitation conditions. The practical results and the simulation ones have shown the influence of the self-excitation capacity on the output quantities of the wind system (voltage, current and torque) in vacuum and under charge (resistive and inductive). In the case where the asynchronous wind turbine is connected to a network, it imposes amplitude, waveform and frequency. But in the case of isolated sites, the asynchronous machine has a low power factor, what means it requires reactive energy. To correct this irregularity, we can improve the power factor by using variable capacitors. The excitation current (reactive power) must be permanently supplied according to the load connected. This requires an intelligent system that regulates the electrical energy produced.

Abstract

Sonar, radar and communication systems solely depend on antenna arrays for signal attainment. These arrays are capable of producing directional signals which can be steered in a certain direction. Faulty elements in an array will result in distorted radiation pattern with increased sidelobe levels.  Far-field faulty antenna detection is necessary due to the near field repairing at complex systems like spacecraft. This paper proposes simulated annealing (SA) optimizing method to find the faulty element’s location in a linear array. In this study, a Chebyshev array is presented with the SA optimization method to detect faulty element location with a random permutation of failure locations tested. This method can successfully detect faulty antenna in a linear array. Even though, this method is developed for linear array it can easily be adapted to a planar array.

Abstract

Maintaining the quality of the water quality is one of the important aspects that play a substantial effect on the aquaculture industry especially in the tilapia industry. The quality of the water needs to be continuously monitored as any deviation from the allowed critical parameters such as water temperature and potential of hydrogen (pH) can cause unwanted scenarios such as disease, stress, higher mortality rate and profit loss. Currently, the monitoring process adopted by most fish breeders is done manually by using a portable sensor. This approach is found to be very tedious, ineffective use of manpower and time consuming particularly for the large-scale aquaculture industry. Hence, this research focuses on developing a simple, low-cost automated water quality monitoring system for the tilapia industry via LabVIEW software. The developed system will be able to monitor the parameter in real-time continuously with the capability of record and analyze each reading in a more efficient way. A data acquisition (DAQ) of NI myRIO-1900 is used as an interface between sensors and a monitoring station equipped with LabVIEW. Additionally, the developed system is equipped with an alarm system to alert the user when any deviation of the parameters occurs. Result shows that the system has a small range of average relative error of 4.28% and 6.22% for temperature and pH level respectively as compare to the portable sensor. Note that the errors are down to the selection of sensors. Furthermore, the developed prototype of the monitoring system has advantages in terms of its flexibility in extending the system with more sensors and allows a longer period of data collection without human intervention. The system is also upgradable with the integration of a control element to control the parameter when the monitored parameter is exceeded the threshold value. Succinctly, the system offers lots of advantages to the aquaculture industries with further improvement leads to better performance.

Abstract

Smartphones, since their emergence has become a significant part of our lives and Android is popular of all. They are successful due to the increasing availability of user applications to answer every possible need, so it is of great importance to ensure security and privacy when handling personal and sensitive information of the user. To secure the data on mobile devices, users use applications available on the Google Play store, which help to hide data on their devices known as Hidden Applications. Hidden applications are categorized as one of the major applications used for data hiding and storing. These applications can be used to hide date from snooping, intrusion and against the data theft. Therefore, the proposed framework in this research helps to find either they store and hide data in efficient manner or not and if they do so either it is encrypted or not. In this paper, main objective is to identify the privacy threats which end users face by using such applications, analyse these application’s behaviour, working, their code to understand how data is hidden and if the information is encrypted, it can be retrieved or not. The work not only focuses on the identification of hidden data/apps; it also provides a mechanism to recover and reconstruct the data from these hidden parts of the memory. In the end, present the results obtained by using the proposed framework in a case file so that it can be used in a criminal court case.

Abstract

License plate recognition (LPR) is one of the classical problems in the field of object recognition. Its application is very crucial in the automation of transportation system since it helps to recognise a vehicle identity, which information is stored in the license plate. LPR usually consists of three major phases: pre-processing, license plate localisation, optical character recognition (OCR). Despite being classical, its implementation faced with much more complicated problems in the real scenario. This paper proposed an improved LPR algorithm based on modified horizontal-vertical edge Projection. The method uses for detecting and localising the region of interest. It is done using the horizontal and vertical projection of the image. Related works proved that the modified horizontal-vertical edge projection is the simplest method to be implemented, yet very effective against Indonesian license plate. However, its performance gets reduced when specular reflection occurs in the sample image. Therefore, morphological operations are utilised in the pre-processing phase to reduce such effects while preserving the needed information. Eighty sample images which captured using various camera configurations were used in this research. Based on the experimental results, our proposed algorithm shows an improvement compared with the previous study and successfully detect 71 license plates in 80 image samples which results in 88.75% accuracy.

Abstract

In this paper the phenomenon of inverse response from systems was investigated and its transient response thoroughly analyzed. Inverse response is shown by non-minimum phase systems and some minimum phase systems. Transient analysis of these systems is lacking in literature A case study was done for a non-linear, non-minimum phase CSTR (continuous stirred tank reactor), which was identified and a novel optimized trajectory for temperature feed was synthesized, which is a non-linear dynamic constrained optimization problem solved using ACADO for a particular chemical reaction. Different control schemes were also implemented on other systems as well, which exibhit inverse responses, including model reference adaptive control. The finding shows that PID-ZN goes with the inverse response, is unable to suppress it and requires large control effort which can have serious hardware limitations. Robustness is another area where PID is lacking with these systems. MRAC shemes were able to overcome all these issues. For CSTR also, these findings hold true thus points at using advance stratigies in process control industries for maximzing product yield.
