Abstract

In recent decade, with advancements in telecommunications and information management systems technology and the increasing requirements of various sectors of the power industry for monitoring and controlling all of the network components (from production to consumption) power companies feel necessary to add intelligence to their grid as a scientific and practical solution to the utility industry. In most of the developed countries, electric power companies are planning to put priority on Smart Grid planning and for fulfilling this, implementation of Smart Metering Systems and energy management are the first and most basic step. Certainly, in the implementation of smart grids and smart metering infrastructure, power companies will face two major challenges, the cost of implementing these systems and the implementation complexity of the system. Therefore, this paper examines the challenges and strategies in order to better implementation of these systems in electrical grids.

Abstract

Considering attraction of the nearest exit, repulsive force of the fire, barrier and its display style, effect of fire exit location on escape time in fire hazard, a mathematical model of evacuation process model was build based on cellular automatic theory. The program was developed by JavaScript. The influencing factors of evacuation were obtained through the simulation model by inputting crew size, creating initial positions of crew and fire seat stochastically. The experimental results show that the evacuation simulation model with authenticity and validity, which has guiding significance for people evacuation and public escape system design. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v11i11.3484

Abstract

Cloud computing assures to deliver reliable services through advanced data centers built on virtualized compute and storage technologies. Users demanding more cloud services will be able to access applications and data from a Cloud anywhere in the world in a pay-as-you-go model. In this paper, we focus on cloud-based performance testing for the applications. We use Load Storm testing tool to configure and test plans to measure the performance of web applications in online social networks. The experimental observations designed to assess the performance fluctuations of social networks on maximum consumer demand days have given specific data pointers which could be utilized for further studies of web service enhancements.

Abstract

The exploratory research on subscribers' switching choice has vital theoretical and practical value. We present eighteen factors which influence subscribers' switching intention based on the Discrete Choice Model, and then establish the DCM for subscribers' switching intention of the 3G/4G operators in China. With a consumer oriented perception, variables are divided into four parts, including subscriber’s characteristics, mobile usage traits, terminal needs and satisfaction. Based on the survey data supported by China Academy of Telecommunication Research of MIT, the study illustrates that there are six factors significantly affects the subscribers switching choice respectively in two scenarios(with MNP or not), but in either scenario they are not all the same. The results of the model provide a strong evidence for operators' decision-making of subscription design and 3G/4G marketing strategies, and it will enhance subscriber holdings of the 3G/4G operators. Meanwhile, it will support the authority to make proper asymmetric MNP policy. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v12i2.3822

Abstract

When the transmitting and receiving coils are equivalent with or not significantly smaller than their separation distance between the two coils, the results of numerical simulations for transfer efficiency of system show that the maximum coupling of two coils or maximum transfer efficiency occur with a certain tilt angle between two coils, which means the two coils with parallel on the same axis is not able to obtain the maximum transmission efficiency. In view of this feature of the wireless power transfer system, we propose a novel means to optimize the transfer efficiency by designing rotatable transmitting coils to achieve the appropriate tile angle. The experimental results show that the presented means is efficient and greatly improves the transfer efficiency. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v11i5.2512

Abstract

This study proposes a fuzzy sliding mode control strategy to realize wind energy conversion optimization based on doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG). Its operational points in partial load zone can be electronically controlled. Chattering in wind energy conversion sliding mode control system is greatly alleviated based on fuzzy switching gain adjustment. The purposes including the maximum power point tracking, decoupling control of active and reactive power of fed induction generation system are fulfilled. Fitful and random wind speeds are mathematical modeled.  Simulation results verified  effectiveness and feasibility of  the proposed control strategy  under the two types of wind speed and indicate that the whole control system has better robustness against uncertainties and can guarantee the power quality.

Abstract

Germanium (Ge) photodiodes were fabricated with the new RMG crucible materials that were established in this study. Results show that Ge large square patterns with size of 208 µm x 208 µm were unable to be achieved if ion implantation process was used in formation of photodiode. Delamination can be observed on all test samples during polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) deposition at 620 oC. This result was in contrast to a previous intrinsic Ge test structure, where good formation of squares with size similar to that 208 µm x 208 µm had been successfully attained even with high annealing temperature above 938 oC. This indicates that doping through ion implantation has affected Ge film and caused delamination even at low temperature. However, good formations of Ge stripes were attained along with the ion implantation process in fabricating the photodiode. Results show that the sheet resistance of Ge stripe has significantly decreased compared to previous Ge resistors. The better resistance is due to the thicker (500 nm) Ge layer. In the case of Ge stripes with a p-i-n junction, only small fraction of test samples have shown a diode characteristic but with high leakage current. Results of I-V measurement show that a large fraction of test samples produced resistor characteristics. The high leakage current is believed due to the fact that the Ge films formed at this stage were polycrystalline in structure. Thus the grain size of Ge stripe has affected the performance. Slight changes on the I-V characteristic of single Ge can be observed when samples were tested under illumination. Therefore, it has potential to be used for future development of energy conversion device.

Abstract

This paper presents an efficient power conditioning system for PV power system generation. The proposed Photovoltaic Power Conditioning System (PVPCS) used a single-stage single-phase Z-Source Inverter (ZSI) integrate with a relatively new evolutionary optimization algorithm known as the Differential Evolution (DE) as the Maximum Power Point (MPP) Tracker. Utilization of single-stage power conditioner overcomes several drawback of the two-stage configuration namely a higher part count, lower efficiency, lower reliability, higher cost and larger size. Furthermore, with a highly effective Differential Evolution (DE) based MPPT technique, the maximum power extraction from PV power generator is always at the optimum value. The proposed technique can track the true global MPP in most environmental circumstances particularly during the occurrence of partial shading condition. The proposed PVPCS is developed using MATLAB/Simulink. Simulation results show that the proposed PVPCS is able to realize inversion and boost function in single processing stage as well as dealing with partial shading condition. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v14i1.7454

Abstract

This paper addressed the issue of vascular ultrasound image segmentation and proposed a novel ultrasonic vascular location and detection method. We contributed in several aspects: Firstly using mean-shift segementation algorithm to obtain the initial segementation results of vascular images; Secondly new data item and smooth item of the graph cut energy function was constructed based on the MRF mode, then we put forward swap and  ideas to optimize segmentation results, consequently accurately located the vessel wall and lumen in vascular images. Finally comparison with experts manually tagging results, and appling edge correlation coefficients and variance to verify the validity of our algorithm, experimental results show that our algorithm can efficiently combines the advantages of mean-shift and graph-cut algorithm and achieve better segmentation results. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v11i10.3346

Abstract

Proposed in this paper is a dynamic resource-aware routing and frequency slots allocation scheme with consideration of both BER requirement and distance adaptive modulation (RA-BERR-DA) for spectrum-sliced elastic optical path networks (SLICE).Numerical simulations are conducted to analysis network performance such as blocking rate and the number of used frequency slots. The results demonstrate that this scheme is able to decrease traffic blocking and improve resource utilization in dynamic spectrum assignment. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v10i7.1448
