Abstract

Traditional post-harvest draying is often weather-dependent and produces low quality rice, so efficient mechanical technologies are needed for small scale farmers. This study evaluated the performance of an innovative, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)-fueled rotary dryer engineered for post-harvest paddy processing for small-scale farmers. The system employed an indirect heating mechanism combined with forced convection at an airflow velocity of 2 m/s. Experimental trials were conducted across three drying temperatures: 45°C, 55°C, and 65°C. The results demonstrated that the LPG heating system provided high thermal stability and achieved a robust equilibrium within 30 to 40 minutes. Elevating the operating temperature significantly accelerated moisture diffusion, reducing the drying duration from 180 minutes at 45°C to 120 minutes at 65°C. Although the 65°C treatment achieved the highest initial energy efficiency, it induced severe hygroscopic stresses that dropped the head rice yield (HRY) to 60.7%. Conversely, the 55°C treatment emerged as the optimal operating condition, successfully balancing drying kinetics with grain physical integrity by yielding the highest HRY of 70.2% within 150 minutes. Further research is needed to integrate automatic temperature control systems, as well as an analysis of the economic feasibility of using LPG on a farmer scale.

Abstract

Indonesia has significant potential as one of the world's leading spice producers; however, digital platforms that integrate spice marketing and education remain limited. This study aims to design Rempahara, a spice marketplace application that integrates visual branding and user experience to improve digital transactions while providing educational content on Indonesian spices. The study employed the Design Thinking method, consisting of the Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test stages. A high-fidelity prototype was evaluated through usability testing involving 30 respondents selected using purposive sampling, comprising users familiar with marketplace applications and interested in cooking or spice products. The evaluation used Task Success Rate, Error Rate, and Time on Task metrics. The results showed a Task Success Rate of 97.1%, an Error Rate of 2.9%, and an Average Completion Time of 26.6 seconds. According to usability effectiveness criteria proposed by ISO 9241-11 and Nielsen's usability principles, these results indicate that the application demonstrates high usability, enabling users to complete tasks effectively and efficiently. Therefore, integrating visual branding and user experience can provide an intuitive and informative digital marketplace for Indonesian spices.

Abstract

The Buduran River in Sidoarjo Regency is a water source used by the community for domestic, agricultural, and fishery purposes. Increasing industrial and residential activities along the river have raised concerns about water pollution, particularly by organic matter and heavy metals. This study aims to analyze the water quality status of the Buduran River based on physicochemical parameters using the STORET method. Water samples were taken from two locations with two repetitions, a total of 8 samples, and tested for temperature, pH, BOD, COD, and the heavy metal Pb. The results showed that temperature and pH were in accordance with the Class II quality standards of the Republic of Indonesia Government Regulation Number 22 of 2021. The levels of BOD, COD, and the heavy metal Pb exceeded the established threshold. The BOD parameter at location points 1 and 2, namely 12.3 mg/L and 20.1 mg/L, respectively, exceeded the quality standard limit of 3 mg/L. The COD parameter at the second location point exceeded the quality standard limit of 29 mg/L because it was above 25 mg/L. The Pb metal parameter at location 1 was 1.63 and the second location was 1.22 mg/L. Both exceeded the quality standard limit. This indicates that the river in Buduran is experiencing water pollution. The role of the government and industrial managers in managing rivers due to industrial activities in mentoring and implementing technology. The scoring calculation using the STORET method showed that the water quality status of the Buduran River in Sidoarjo was moderately polluted at all points, with a score of -12 at locations 1 and 2 and a score of -18. These findings indicate the need for better waste management to maintain the sustainability of the river ecosystem.

Abstract

Indonesia generates an estimated 38.6 million tons of solid waste annually, with Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) forming a persistent fraction of plastic debris because it degrades extremely slowly in the environment. This study explores EcoPlast Paving Block, a cement-free paving element manufactured from shredded LDPE waste and natural sand, designed for the practical needs of Islamic boarding school (pesantren) infrastructure. Three LDPE–sand mass ratios (70:30, 50:50, and 40:60) were investigated, each represented by three specimens (n = 9) with nominal dimensions of 20 × 10 × 6 cm. Compressive strength was measured at 28 days, using the procedure of SNI 03-0691-1996 as an equivalent performance reference. The mixes achieved average strengths of 13.40 MPa, 20.54 MPa, and 42.69 MPa for 70:30, 50:50, and 40:60 respectively, indicating a consistent increase in strength with higher sand content and placing the 40:60 composition above the Grade A threshold. Water absorption remained below 3% for all specimens. These results suggest that LDPE–sand paving blocks can offer a lightweight, durable, and waste-based alternative to conventional cement paving in pesantren courtyards and access ways.
