Abstract

Water transport in Tarakan plays an important role in passenger mobility and goods distribution. However, port operations still face limitations related to water depth and supporting infrastructure. This study aims to analyse the requirements and plan the water-based facilities of Juata Laut Ferry Port using an adaptive approach based on existing site conditions. The methodology includes tidal analysis using the least squares method, wave analysis based on ECMWF data, wind analysis with Windrose, and bathymetric evaluation in accordance with the Directorate General of Water Transport (2014) guidelines. The results show that wave conditions (SWH ≤ 0.77 m) and wind conditions are generally low to moderate, posing no significant operational constraints. Bathymetric analysis, however, identifies shallow areas (<5 m) that may interfere with navigation, particularly during low tide. Technical calculations indicate that the required waterway facilities comply with regulatory standards but need adjustment to local hydrographic conditions. Therefore, port facility planning should adopt a site-specific and adaptive approach by utilising natural depth corridors and limited dredging in critical areas to improve navigational safety, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability.

Abstract

Currently, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are required to meet consumer needs by developing innovative products to compete in the market. Based on interviews with customers of rattan handicraft products, baby swings receive the most complaints, particularly regarding safety, comfort, and durability. Therefore, this study focuses on redesigning rattan baby swings to align with customer needs and compete with modern household products. To achieve this, the study identifies the design requirements and technical characteristics desired by customers through data collection, Quality Function Deployment (QFD) Phases 1 and 2, and product design development. The results of Phase 1 QFD indicate that customer design needs encompass economic, ergonomic, durability, aesthetic, and feature aspects. Meanwhile, the results of Phase 2 QFD indicate that the technical characteristics manufacturers must meet include the use of anthropometric data, design modifications, selection of high-quality raw materials, attractive colors, comfortable padding, and materials free from hazardous chemicals. The swing dimensions were determined based on anthropometric data for adults and infants, referencing the 50th percentile of adult hip height and the 95th percentile of infant arm reach and span.

Abstract

Bollard Pull Test is a standard procedure to measure the static towing capacity of a tug boat under full engine load. This study analyzes the Bollard Pull Test results of tug boat GT.117, equipped with two 6HA2M-WDT main engines producing a combined power of 596 kW, and a propulsion system consisting of two sets of four-blade Fixed Pitch Propellers (FPP). The test was conducted on October 2, 2025, for 10 minutes at 100% engine load (RPM = 1,850), generating 120 data points. Descriptive statistical analysis yields a mean bollard pull of 8.567 tons, standard deviation of 0.335 tons, maximum of 9.321 tons, minimum of 7.657 tons, and a coefficient of variation of 3.91%, indicating good test stability. Comparison with theoretical values based on actuator disk theory yields a total theoretical thrust of 8.967 tons, giving an actual-to-theoretical ratio of 95.6%. After wind resistance correction of 0.018 tons, the corrected bollard pull is 8.585 tons. Test results comply with Bureau Veritas (BV) classification requirements and port operational standards. Water depth factor h⁄T=5.85) and wind speed of 8 knots are assessed to have no significant effect on test validity. This study contributes to Indonesian naval architecture literature by providing a comprehensive quantitative analysis of tug boat propulsion performance based on standardized field test data.

Abstract

Fillet weld on Tee Joint connections is commonly performed using a multipass technique to achieve the required leg length. However, specific leg length dimensions can also be achieved using a single-pass technique when welding parameters are properly selected. This study aims to investigate the effect of Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) parameters on achieving fillet weld leg lengths of 6 mm, 7 mm, and 8 mm in a single pass on ASTM A36 steel. The welding process was carried out in the horizontal (2F) position with variations in welding current, voltage, and travel speed based on the Welding Procedure Specification (WPS). The results showed that a current range of 165–183 A, voltage of 23–24 V, and travel speed of 167–219 mm/min successfully achieved a 6 mm leg length; a current range of 185–225 A, voltage of 25–26 V, and travel speed of 280–315 mm/min achieved a 7 mm leg length; while a current range of 231–254 A, voltage of 27–29 V, and travel speed of 321–352 mm/min achieved an 8 mm leg length. The results of Visual Testing (VT), Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI), and Macro Testing indicated that the welds were free from defects and complied with the applicable acceptance standards.

Abstract

This study evaluates the performance of a Mitutoyo dial height gauge (resolution 0.01 mm, range 0–600 mm) in accordance with JIS B 7517-2018 through deviation analysis and repeatability assessment at nine set points (20–600 mm), using a certified Grade 0 gauge block as reference standard under laboratory conditions of 20 ± 1 °C and 50–60% relative humidity. The maximum deviation recorded was −0.0033 mm (at the 20 mm set point), below the Maximum Permissible Error (MPE) of ±0.020 mm per JIS B 7517-2018. The largest repeatability value was 0.01 mm, satisfying the standard limit. All nine measurement points passed the conformance criteria. A consistent negative deviation pattern at set points ≤ 200 mm indicates a minor systematic error correlated with Abbe principal violation at short measurement ranges, with direct implications for quality assurance in precision manufacturing.

Abstract

Indonesia holds substantial feedstock potential for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production, particularly from Used Cooking Oil (UCO) and Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME), yet only one SAF production facility is currently in operation. The geographical mismatch between widely dispersed feedstock sources and centralized production infrastructure remains a key bottleneck for national SAF development. This study applies a Spatial K-Means Clustering approach to the coordinates of 15 feedstock-producing provinces and 36 international airports across Indonesia to identify optimal locations for SAF production facilities. Three scenarios were comparatively analyzed using the Within-Cluster Sum of Squares (WCSS) metric, which covers configurations of 2, 3, and 4 production facilities with the existing facility in Cilacap incorporated as a fixed centroid. The results show that the 3-facility scenario is the most optimal configuration, recommending two new facilities in Riau and Central Kalimantan to complement the existing Cilacap facility, achieving a 55% reduction in WCSS compared to the 2-facility scenario. This study also identifies an infrastructure gap in Eastern Indonesia that warrants a dedicated policy approach, given the limited availability of UCO and POME feedstock in that region.
