Abstract

Life Expectancy Rate is the average number of years of life that is lived by someone who has reached a certain age. Life Expectancy is a tool to evaluate the government performance in improving the prosperity of the people. Studies on the factors that influence Life Expectancy Rate are needed to reach more accurate mathematics model to provide a better consideration for the government to determine the direction of future development policies. The data used in this study were derived from SUSENAS data with the objects of observations are all districts/cities in Indonesia in 2012. In this research, Support Vector Regression (SVR) method is used to estimate the effect of education factor which is represented by length of education by years (X) on Life Expectancy Rate (Y). Support Vector Regression (SVR) model in this research used several different kernels such as  polynomial kernel, RBF and Exponential RBF (ERBF) to find the best model. The best model criterion is the model that produces the largest R2 value. The best model resulted in this research is a model that uses Exponential RBF kernel.

Abstract

Teaching English in Indonesia is implemented through the teaching of EFL (English as a foreign language). Teaching and learning English as a second language poses a challenge for both teachers and students. Problems that arise such as lack of student motivation, changing curriculum, monotonous learning, lack of teacher creativity, and lack of linguistic knowledge in teaching become a separate issue. This article describes the role linguistic morphology plays in teaching and learning English in the classroom. It particularly describes the challenge of combining simple compound words with morphological forms created by the teacher. This teaching design will be applied to 7th grade junior high school students. This simple design will introduce how to combine noun and adjective using the daily context familiar to the students. The researcher expects to see the challenges the teachers will face during the application of the design in the classroom and how they create ways to deal with the challenges.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate how the Think-Pair-Share (TPS) technique can improve the students’ reading skill at English Language Department, Muhammadiyah University of Mataram. The problem found in the fourth semester students is that they have low ability in comprehending the text. The TPS technique is offered by the researcher to solve the problem. Later on, the design of this research was classroom action research adopted from Kemmis & McTaggart which goes through a cycle that consists of four stages namely planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. At the cycle 1 the students failed to meet the criteria of success because only 14 (fourteen) out of 30 (thirty) or 47% students who got the minimum passing grade 75 (seventy five) and the average score was 67. It meant that the study must be continued to the next cycle. At last, in the cycle 2 met the criteria of success in which 67% students or 20 (twenty) out of 30 (thirty) students met the minimum passing grade 75 and the average score was 72. Besides gaining improvement in the reading score, the students also seemed enthusiastic in thinking, pairing and sharing their ideas. They stated that this technique is able to encourage and motivate them in thinking, exploring and sharing their opinion and ideas. This technique is also good to enhance the cooperation with other people. Finally, TPS technique is also able to increase the students’ confidence to share their ideas in front of many people.
