Abstract

Truth and objectivity are fundamental principles of the ethics of journalism. The quality of good journalism in any society, among others, is measured by these two indispensable principles. Because of their importance to the profession, this paper interrogates these concepts in the light of their practicability. Can truth and objectivity be achieved in the field of journalism in view of our various conceptions of truth? How can we deal with the problem of concealment of truth and misleading reports in journalism? Are journalists morally bound to tell the whole truth to the public always? These are the key questions this paper seeks to address. It explores the various notions of truth, namely: the correspondence theory, the coherent theory and the pragmatic theory. The question of objectivity in the presentation of information to the public was equally addressed. Can objectivity be ever achieved in journalism? What are the prospects and problems of journalistic objectivism? The paper adopts the method of critical and textual analysis. In all, the paper concludes that truth and objectivity can be achieved in journalism if practitioners are well tutored in professional ethics with a consciousness of its concrete internalization and actual practicalization.

Abstract

Issues in euthanasia have become one of the debatable topics in the present situation, one of the reasons being the fear of lingering between life and death in an unbearable and painful condition. With the advent of science and technology in the field of medicine, the physician can always dictate terms in curing the diseases, which were once considered to be fatal. This implication has eroded the line between life and death where people are of the firm conviction that with the help of a physician we can always dictate death to wait for some more time. This advance in technology has bridged the dividing line between life and death where the transition from life to death can be sustained by artificial machines. One important consequence of this advancement in science and technology resulting in sustaining death, posed a serious question among the physicians, lawyers, ethicists and society in settling the line that separates life and death. For instance, the physicians desire to frame some definitions of death so that they can protect themselves legally and allow them to perform certain medical procedures like organ transplantation, so that they can ease their conscience in dealing with death. The ethical debate on Euthanasia thus creates interest in the researcher to study about the topic in detail. The research work is be based on the data collected from libraries, journals, magazines, newspaper, law report, seminars, and conferences. The researcher has also reviewed few articles in which it has been observed that the authors have analyzed the differences of arguments in and against euthanasia to portray its progressiveness.

Abstract

The significance of Epistemology (theory of knowledge) is well known in philosophy. Hardly do we find a philosophical system without epistemology. Almost every major philosophical system has its distinct epistemological and metaphysical theses. Accordingly, if tribal philosophy is to be counted as a major system of philosophy, it is more likely that it has its distinct epistemological and metaphysical theses. In other words, if we can have a tribal epistemology distinguished from the other epistemological systems, then, we can expect to have a tribal philosophical system distinguished from other philosophical systems. To aim at the construction of a new epistemology and new philosophy, namely, tribal epistemology is very ambitious. It demands path-breaking inquiries into both epistemology and tribal culture such that a new epistemology and, along with it, a new system of philosophy can be established. I do not claim of making any such path-breaking inquiries in this work. However, I attempt to defend the idea that there can be a tribal epistemology distinct from other epistemological systems and, hence, do defend the idea of a philosophical system that can be called a tribal system of philosophy or “tribal philosophy”. Neither tribal epistemology nor tribal philosophy has been established as a major area of investigation in philosophy. In this work, I defended the very idea of a tribal epistemology with the objective that further philosophical investigations into the tribal knowledge systems can be fruitfully carried out on a plausible strong theoretical ground.
