Abstract

Free radicals are highly reactive compounds in the body that can cause degenerative diseases. One mechanism that can counteract free radicals is antioxidants. Natural antioxidants can be obtained from traditional drinks made from plants that contain active antioxidant compounds such as black turmeric (Curcuma caesia Roxb.) from the Zingiberaceae family. This study aims to determine the antioxidant activity of black turmeric extract. Before testing the antioxidant activity, qualitative and quantitative analysis were carried out. Qualitative analysis was carried out by phytochemical screening. The antioxidant activity of black turmeric extract was tested using the DPPH method. This test begins with the manufacture of extracts and preparation of test samples, then measurement of free radical scavenging activity using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer is carried out. Based on the results of the percentage measurement, the linear regression equation for the ethanol extract was obtained, namely y = 0.1526x + 0.9105 and the value of R2 = 0.9965, and for the methanol extract, namely y = 0.2376x + 1.6809 and the value of R2 = 0.996. According to the linear regression equation, black turmeric extract has antioxidant activity, which is categorized as a very weak antioxidant with an IC50 of 321,687 ppm for ethanol extract and 203, 363 ppm for methanol extract.

Abstract

Tanning industry skin use ingredient chemical and water in amount which so much This process produces liquid waste containing various organic substances from ingredient raw and substance chemical from additional materials used During process tanning. This study aims to determine the efficiency of the electrocoagulation method in reducing the parameters BOD, COD, ammonia, and chromium. A sample of 100 liters of leather tanning waste water used is put into a grease trap and flowed into an electrocoagulation bath in which electrodes (3 cathodes and 3 anodes) have been arranged. The electrocoagulation process lasted for 60 minutes. Parameters of wastewater quality examined include BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand), COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand), ammonia, and total chromium. The method for measuring the quality parameters of tannery wastewater uses the appropriate Indonesian National Standards. The results of the measurements will be analyzed descriptively by comparing the results with the standards of the Minister of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia Number 5 of 2014 concerning Quality Standards for Tannery Wastewater. After the electrocoagulation process is complete, then the effectiveness is calculated in percent (%). The effectiveness of the electrocoagulation process in reducing the levels of parameters from the highest percentage was total chromium (62.01%); COD (58.29%); BOD (52.52%); and ammonia (42.79%). The electrocoagulation process is quite effective in reducing the levels of tannery wastewater quality parameters.

Abstract

Thyroid storm is an emergency and requires immediate treatment. Diagnosing thyroid storm is difficult because of its clinical symptoms that mimic infection such as tachycardia, high fever, and sometimes shortness of breath. This study employs a case study approach. The research subjects were patients with impending thyroid storm. The research location is in the Emergency Unit of Cibinong Hospital. Data analysis techniques using literature studies. In this case, a 30-year-old man at the Emergency Unit of Cibinong Hospital presented a clinical Impending Thyroid Storm with multi-organ involvement including Thyroid Heart Disease in the form of Atrial Fibrillation, gastrointestinal complaints, Hypoglycemia accompanied by Respiratory Failure. The patient has been diagnosed with Graves Disease for 5 years. Treatment for this patient includes correction of hypoglycemia, diuretics and digoxin. Propylthiouracil (PTU) and Propranolol were given when the FT4 and TSH results were out. After being treated with this therapy, clinically improved, marked by reduced tightness, fever and palpitations. On the ecg examination, atrial fibrillation was not found again. Recognizing Thyroid Storm as early as possible can prevent the severity of complications. Hypoglycemia correction is no less important. PTU therapy, Propranolol, Furosemide, Spironolactone and Digoxin are still good therapeutic modalities to be used, especially in type B hospitals.
