Abstract

The red palm weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier is the most deadly and dangerous pest of coconut, date, oil, sago and other palms. R. ferrugineus is distributed in over 33 countries over a wide range of area under different agro-climatic conditions and attacks more than two dozen palm species. In the Middle East the weevil is the most destructive pest of the date palms. The hidden nature of the pest attack makes timely detection of the infestation and control measures difficult. The earlier reviews provide details of biology and control methods viz. phyto-sanitary and preventive, curative, biological, baiting and trapping etc. Different combinations of above mentioned control methods have also been tried with varying degrees of success. Results of two major IPM programmes carried out in the gulf countries, the first during 1993-1998 mainly based on chemical and pheromone trapping and the second from 1998-2002 using bio-agents and pheromone trapping are discussed. In Jordan valley intensive pheromone trapping and incorporation of systemic insecticide in irrigation water could not control the pest even after three years. Development of ecofriendly pest control strategies like hybrid sterility, incompatibility and disruption of tolerance to high temperatures in Gulf and Mediterranean regions is suggested to combat the pest.

Abstract

A preliminary attempt was made for biological control of coconut leaf eating caterpillar, Opisina arenosella Walker, by releasing two Trichogramma species viz. T. chilonis Ishii and T. embryophagum Hartig @ 1,000 to 4,000 parasitised eggs per palm in Bangalore, India. The mean percent reduction in larval population by 75.6, 60.0, 33.3 and 50.0% in T. chilonis and 88.8%, 175.0, 66.7 and 75.0% in T. embryophagum was recorded in treated palms during 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation of the pest compared to untreated control. There was non- significant difference between various release rates irrespective of the species, indicating that lower release rate of 1,000 parasitised eggs/palm as adequate. On sentinel egg cards, parasitism was low 2.0 - 5.0%, 0.0 - 2.0% and 0.0% in T. chilonis, and T. embryophagum released palms and untreated control palms, respectively. The field trial gave an indication that Trichogramma could be a potential parasitoid against O. arenosella and it is suggested that the parasitoids could be released and tested on a large scale in endemic areas to authenticate efficacy.

Abstract

Root (wilt) is a major disease of coconut in Kerala and in certain parts of Tamil Nadu. The lasting solution for combating the disease is by evolving root (wilt) disease resistant/tolerant varieties through sustained breeding programmes. Development of visual symptoms of root (wilt) disease is very slow and there is a time lag between infection and symptom expression. Therefore, identification of root (wilt) disease-free palms using early diagnostic techniques (serological techniques) is a basic requirement for the production of quality seedlings. For the mass screening of coconut samples DAC-indirect ELISA has been standardized earlier using antibody raised against pathogen related protein found in diseased palms, but it take about 44 hrs for the completion of the test. In the present investigation using phytoplasma-specific antibodies, test could be refined to make it a more rapid and sensitive one. It has been found that the results could be obtained within 24 hrs with very high sensitivity of 98.4%. Similarly, efficiency of extracting antigen from coconut leaf samples was enhanced by using ART MICCRA D-8 tissue homogeniser. Highest difference in absorbance values between healthy and infected samples was obtained while using carbonate bicarbonate buffer pH 9.6 with additives followed by plain buffer. Thus test could be used to detect phytoplasmal infection in coconut palms even before the appearance of visual symptoms. The modified procedure is being used for identifying disease-free mother palms from disease endemic areas for producing quality seedlings either by crossing programmes or from open pollinated nuts.

Abstract

Promotion of greater access to affordable choice of technologies and their prompt use for coconut productivity is necessary to sustainable development of coconut farming. The crux of the issue is; coconut growers who are aware and have the knowledge of the technologies, also seem to be reticent about adopting the package. The question therefore is; why does this happen? This research paper summons the identification of social and ecological elements that surround adoption of innovative technologies in improving coconut production and the kind of strategies for a best fit for a need-based programme of knowledge transfer, facilitating picking up a few technologies for possible adoption. A methodological prime-mover viz., Participatory Rural Appraisal, Planning and Action among coconut growers was used to walk the ‘reality-led’ and ‘technology-driven’ choices that are really acceptable and usable. Yet the farmers/neighbours appeared to be reluctant even to “talk” the “walk”. On the other hand, absence of dependable and sustainable model, lack of confidence, inadequate infrastructure and support systems, including sufficient and timely credit and constant exposure through IT seem to accelerate ‘vagaries’ on coconut for sustainable adoption. The need must, therefore be to polarize the two contrasting positions-appropriate tech-choice vs vagaries of adoption-by a suitable ‘model’ that would serve as a guide to coconut farmers.

Abstract

Studies on the presence and involvement of proteases in the development and maturation of endosperm of Cocos nucifera L. revealed changes in concentration of proteases with the age of the nut, variety and season. More BAPNA (Na - Benzoyl DL - arginine p-nitroanilide) hydrolysing activity. Was observed at the immature stage and more gelatinolytic activity at the mature stage of the coconut endosperm development. There was apparent difference between seasons, the highest protease activity was during winter months.

Abstract

Tall coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) palm is an allogamous and highly heterozygous which is a major obstacle for conventional breeding. Microspore embryogenesis is a promising method which enables the development of homozygous lines. This study is conducted to detect the coconut microspore viability after heat treatment with different incubation periods for the induction of embryogenesis. Anthers were collected from the inflorescences of two coconut palms at three weeks before splitting stage and microspores were extracted. They were subjected to heat treatment for 1, 3, 6 and 9 days either prior or post inoculation. Viability was tested using iodine potassium iodide, acetocarmine and 2, 3, 5- triphenyltetrazolium chloride. Induction of embryogenesis after subjecting to the heat treatment was also studied. Cultures were initiated in modified Eeuwens Y3 medium. To observe the nuclear status of microspores, the samples were stained with 1% acetocarmine after 7 and 14 days. The callus formation was also recorded. A significant difference in viability was observed between control, heat treated prior inoculation and post inoculation when observed in day 01, day 07 and day 14. Significant difference in viability was not detected with no incubation (I0) and 01-day incubation (I1) when microspores were observed in 01 day and 07 days whereas, 3-day incubation (I2), 6-day incubation (I3) and 9-day incubation (I4) resulted significantly different viability of microspores when observed in 01 and 07 day after culturing. Viability of microspores were significantly different for all incubation periods 14 days after culturing. Result was similar with the three stains used to test viability after testing in 1, 7 and 14 days. The highest frequency of binuclear (58.5%) and tetra nuclear (7.2%,) microspores were recorded in the samples treated after culturing the microspores. The multinuclear stages of microspore indicated the induction of embryogenesis. The most effective heat treatment was 38 °C for 3 days after inoculation of the microspores. The results of the study are important for further improvement of microspore embryogenesis protocol.

Abstract

The value addition to the by-products enhances the profitability of the industry with a zero-waste concept. Defatted desiccated coconut flour (DCF) is a residue after the extraction of virgin coconut oil (VCO). This research aims to identify the effect of a variety of coconuts on the physical, nutritional and functional quality of DCF compared to whole wheat flour (WWF). Mature coconuts of four different varieties: Tall×Tall (TT), Ran Thambili (RT), San Ramon (SR), and Gon Thambili (GT) were used for the VCO extraction process by the cold press extraction followed by conversion of residue into flour (DCF). The average residue recovery is 15.33 ± 0.41% (p>0.05). The particle size of DCF is significantly higher than WWF, and only 23.16% of DCF is at the 250 µm level. Abstract

Coconut (Cocos nucifera) sap is a nutritious liquid which oozes from the phloem vessels of coconut inflorescence. Dried coconut sap powder was developed as an instant beverage from unfermented coconut sap collected from a novel sap collection device and its quality was assessed. The sap was mixed with maltodextrin (DE-10) (Treatment 1; 3%, Treatment 2; 4%, Treatment 3; 5% and Treatment 4; 6%) and the solution was fed to a spray dryer. The powder of sap was packed in a triple-laminated aluminium pouch and stored at 4±2 oC for quality analysis. The data was analyzed through Minitab 16 software. The recovery percentage of powder was 17.05±2.45% and it showed good quality character for moisture (0.80±0.20%), bulk density (0.05±0.00 g/L), tapped density (0.068±0.00 g/L), hygroscopicity (19.05±0.34%), and solubility (96.72±0.87 %). The browning index (13.53±0.00) and lightness (86.75±2.17) of the sample were assessed. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) view showed an even distribution of particles. The dilution ratio (D1:8 %, D2: 10 %, D3: 12 %) of powder was analyzed through sensory evaluation. Appearance and odour of the beverage were not affected significantly (p>0.05) with the dilution ratio. The analysis showed that it contained protein (1.44 ±0.11%), ash (0.99±0.01%), mineral (Na: 15.4±0.13mg/Kg, K: 369.4±0.87 mg/Kg, Ca: 46.8±0.89 mg/Kg, Mg: 7.7±0.52 mg/Kg), crude fiber (0.08±0.01%), total sugar (90.67±2.66%), moltodextrin (24.40±2.55%), sucrose (31.47±2.77%), glucose (16.04±0.23%), fructose (18.76±1.25%) and total phenol (138.69±0.17 mg GAE/ 100 g). One cup (100 ml) of sap contains higher nutrients with natural minerals to achieve high consumer demand.

Abstract

This study examines the biochemical and physicochemical properties of coconut water from three coconut (Cocos nucifera Linn.) cultivars—Aromatic Dwarf (AROD), Catigan Dwarf (CATD), and Laguna Tall (LAGT)—across maturity stages ranging from 5 to 12 months. Key parameters analyzed included pH, total soluble solids (TSS), specific gravity, glucose, protein, and electrolyte composition (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and chloride). Results revealed significant variations influenced by both cultivar and maturity. AROD exhibited the highest glucose and TSS levels at early maturity, making it ideal for naturally sweet beverages. LAGT maintained stable electrolyte concentrations, supporting its application in rehydration formulations. CATD had the highest calcium and magnesium levels, suggesting potential benefits for bone and muscle health. Trends in pH and specific gravity provided insights into compositional shifts during maturation. These findings highlight the diverse functional properties of coconut water across cultivars, offering valuable insights for optimizing harvest timing, product formulation, and market positioning in the functional beverage and nutraceutical industries.

Abstract

This article presents the results of a field experiment on the production of heart of coconut (HOC) in Santo Island, Vanuatu. It demonstrated that the production of HOC is possible under the conditions of northern Vanuatu without irrigation and with low inputs. Only sodium chloride was applied as a fertiliser and the use of scrap copra sacks as a mulch was proved particularly efficient to reduce the weeds invasion and to preserve moisture. In this experiments, 3 densities of planting in an equilateral pattern with a spacing of 0.8 m, 1.4 m and 2.0 m were tested, and the growth parameters of the seedlings and the yield of the final product over a period of 2 years were recorded. It appeared that the higher the density of planting, the lower the weight of each HOC and the higher the yield by area unit. Two years after planting, the yield of HOC was 11.8 MT/hectare (0.8 m spacing), 7.7 MT/hectare (1.4 m) and 6.4 MT/hectare (2.0 m) with an average weight of HOC of 688 g, 1372 g and 2330 g respectively. The market requirement for HOC individual weight must be taken into account to choose the appropriate spacing and duration of cultivation. A strong relation between the stem girth and the HOC weight that can be described in the form of an allometric equation makes easy to estimate at any time the potential yield of HOC by measuring the stem girth of the whole palm.
