Abstract

The population and diversity of microorganism in compost charcoal were isolated and identified. The microorganism were prepared in nutrient agar and saboraud agar media. The results revealed that the total population in each gram of compost charcoal were respectively counted 1.78 x 1012 for bacteria and 9.23 x 109 for fungi. Three species of bacteria and fungi were respectively identified; i.e Species II, Bacillus sp and Species V; and Penicillium sp, Fusarium sp and Species A.

Abstract

Biji suren (Toona sureni (Blume) Merr.), mimba (Azadirachta indica A.Juss.), mahoni (Swietenia mahagoni (L.) Jacq.), dan saga (Adenanthera pavonina L.) telah digunakan untuk mengobati penyakit tertentu oleh masyarakat tradisional, namun demikian penelitian mengenai bioaktivitas keempat biji tersebut terbatas. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis aktivitas toksisitas dari biji suren, mahoni, mimba, dan saga. Keempat sampel diekstraksi dengan cara maserasi menggunakan etanol 96%. Ekstrak etanol yang diperoleh diuji efek toksisitasnya terhadap larva Artemia salina dengan metode Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) dan hasil BSLT dipresentasikan melalui Lethal Concentration 50 (LC50). Nilai LC50 dari ekstrak etanol biji suren, mahoni, mimba, dan saga berturut-turut adalah 75, 84, 323 dan 449 µg/mL. Keempat ekstrak tersebut memiliki bioaktivitas dengan nilai LC50 <1000 µg/mL, dan ekstrak biji suren paling berpotensi memiliki bioaktivitas paling tinggi karena nilai LC50 paling rendah.

Abstract

The  sengon wood waste fired stove was installed, to supily energy into certain length of circulating duct of the dryirlg chamber. The utilization of wet slabs  (moisture content  163.3  percent) in a wood stove produced drying air tempe- rature in the chamber at  30ᵒC.  When  jointing board waste  (moisture content  12.16  percent) was used to fire the stoue the drying temperature  of  70°.C was  achiued.The efficiency  of the wood waste fired  stoue was 39.46 percent, calculated on the basis of the energy produced by sengon wood waste burned, and the energy consumed by the drying  wood i.e 3.641 and 1.397 GJ.

Abstract

Females of ambrosia beetle Xyleborus sp., one of the most destructive wood boring insects on lone logs (Pinus merkusii), were reared on rubberwood sawdust base media. The media were frepared in test tubes and one famale pertube was then introduced. These cultures were maintained in a dark room at 28°C and 70 % RH for 40 days. Observations were made for number of branches and length of galleries system through the tube walls, and number of progenies produced by the beetles after the media were dissected.It was shown that of the 22 culture tubes, 18 tubes were developed. Most of the beetles extensively tunneled to and fro criss-cross within the media. Mean branch number and gallery length were 16. 7 junction and 46.4 cm tracks ranging 0 - 33 and 0 - 52 respectively. The average of progeny number was 47.9 per tube with one male for about 14. 7 females. It seemed that both number of branches and length of galleries system indicatively correspond to the level of the beetle fecundity.

Abstract

Indonesia kaya akan aneka sumber karbohidrat non-beras, termasuk di dalamnya tumpang sari tanaman hutan. Bulir beras simulasi (Simulated Rice Grain/SRG) dibuat dari bahan tepung aneka sumber karbohidrat non-beras dengan pendekatan sifat fisiko kimia tepung dan bulir beras varietas Ciherang. Penelitian bertujuan untuk merancang bangun mesin pencetak SRG berbahan baku campuran tepung hasil tumpang sari tanaman hutan. Perancangan mesin pencetak SRG didekati melalui kriteria perancangan, analisa desain, desain fungsional dan proses manufaktur, mesin ini diuji coba dengan menggunakan bahan campuran terbuat 30% pati garut, 42 % tepung tales beneng dan 28% tepung sorgum. Hasil rekayasa mesin pencetak SRG mempunyai dimensi ruang pencentak 6,8 x 2,2 x 5,06 mm , rasio pemampatan  1,9-2,3, kekuatan tekan 600 N. Sudut luncur pengumpan 70o, lama tekan pencetakan  0-5000 mikrodetik, kapasitas 900 bulir per jam dan temperatur bantalan ruang cetak 25-80 oC. Pengujian mesin pencetak menghasilkan bulir SRG dengan panjang 7,1 mm, tebal 2,8 mm, bentuk agak bulat, kekerasan bulir 0,1–2 N, massa jenis SRG 620-770  kg/m3 dan bobot  17,5-29 g per 1000 butir.

Abstract

Minimum   level   of  stand  damages  is one  of  the  obyectives   of  the  tropical  rain  forest  harvesting  practices  in which the  Indonesian   Selective   Cutting  system   is applied.  In order  to  meet  that  obyective,   various manuals  should   be prepared based on sound  quantitative  data.Observation    on stand  damages  due  to felling  operations  has been  carried out  in Suka Jaya  Makmur  Enterprise  (SJM) and  Kawedar  Mukti   Timber   Enterprise   (KMT),   both   located   in  West Kalimantan.   The  stand  damages  caused  by  felling one  tree  vary  from   3  to  8  trees with   an average  of  6 trees  in SJM,  and  from  2  to  7  trees  with   an average of  4  trees  in KMT.  The  relationships    between   stand  damage  (Y)  and  stand  density   (X)  are: Y = -4,69   + 0,08   X for SJM and  Y = -6,83+ 0,08 X for KMT.The  results  of  the  study  showed   that  the  major  causes of  the  variation  of  stand  damages  are  improper  direction  of tree felling,   and  less control  from  supervisors/managers.

Abstract

Sifat pengeringan dan pengawetan kayu kamalaka perlu diteliti guna mendukung upaya perbaikan dan peningkatan kualitas kayunya. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui variasi tebal papan terhadap sifat pengeringan dan mengetahui pengaruh konsentrasi dan lama perendaman terhadap retensi dan penetrasi bahan pengawet CCB dan Boron. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa laju penurunan kadar air kayu kamalaka tiap hari untuk tebal papan 2,0 cm; 2,5 cm dan 3,0 cm masing-masing 0,61% ; 0,55% dan 0,49%. Selama pengeringan, permukaan papan berubah bentuk menjadi mencawan, pecah dan belah sepanjang serat dan terparah terjadi pada papan ukuran 2,0 cm. Retensi pengawet CCB dan Boron bervariasi dari 4,9 kg/m3sampai dengan 11,3 kg/m3, sedangkan penetrasinya dari 4,6 mm sampai dengan 7 mm. Konsentrasi berpengaruh sangat nyata terhadap retensi CCB dan Boron serta berpengaruh nyata terhadap penetrasi CCB. Penambahan konsentrasi meningkatkan retensi bahan pengawet CCB dan Boron serta peningkatan penetrasi bahan pengawet CCB. Sedangkan lama perendaman tidak berpengaruh nyata. Kayu kamalaka dapat diawetkan dengan CCB dengan konsentrasi 10% dan lama rendaman minimal selama 8 hari, dan jika memakai Boron dengan konsetrasi 10% dan lama rendaman harus lebih dari 8 hari.

Abstract

Regrowth forests in Indonesia have eesentially been developed since several centuries ago particularly in Java for the luxury timber species such as teak (Tectona grandis), rasamala (Altingia excelsea), Sonokeling (Dalbergia latifolia), mahoni (Swietenia spp.), etc. In this system the young plantation always have surplus trees which are likely to cause overcrowding and furthermore reducing the growth of bigger trees. Accordingly, at certain ages (depending on species, site class, etc.) the surplus trees are thinned out regularly throughout the planting cycle to achieve a maximum timber yield. Each thinning will produce a plenty of small-sized logs which are generally considered too small for sawmills or plymills. Such logs are commonly used for firewood or other low value products, or even left to rot in the forest floor.This study investigated a technical possibility of turning the waste wood into useful interior products, such as table top, furniture blanks, window and door frames, etc. Thinned logs of two wood species, tusam (Pinus merkusii) and damar (Agathis lorantifolia) collected from a government company plantation in West Java were used in this study. Procedures of saving logs into boards, drying and further machining processes were basically undertaken according to the convetional practices. Furniture blanks, table tops and large planks were manufactured by side-jointing and or laminating thin boards with a simple clamping procedures. Polyvinyl acetate and resorcinol formaldehyde adhesives were uesd for constructing blanks and planks respectively. The results revealed thar interior products made up from the thinned logs possessed a comparable characteristics to those made from mature timbers. Table tops and blanks built from three layers of laminates gave a better concictency in shape and straightness than the one layer side joint panels.

Abstract

One of  the  partideboard  properties that  must be tested  is internal  bond  strength  or tensile  strength  perpendicular to surface. the  testing  procedure is relatively  difficult   because  before  applying  a tension  load vertically  to the  board  face, the  specimen  must   be  adhere  to  steel  or  wood   blocks  for  seuerol hours  to obtain  good  adhesion.  To  simplify   the pro- cedure, the  use  of  another   testing procedure called shear  strength   test  was tried.  It  is found   that  there  is  a relationship between   shear strength   (X)  and  internal  bond  strength   (Y)   which  can  be expressed   by   linear  regression  equations  i.e,: Y  = -  0.105  +  0.180   X  for  interior  particleboard  and  Y =  -  0.925  + 0.398  X  for  exterior  particleboard.   The  interior particleboard  specimens were  tested   under  dry   condition  whereas  exteriorparticleboard  specimem were boiled  for  two hours  before  testing.  Both regression equations can not  be pooled,  Based  on  the  result  it can be cohcluded  that  internal bond  strength   of  particleboard  can  be estimated by  using  its shear strength value.

Abstract

Subgrade  construction is an important part in forest  road building,  Subgrade soils with a high clay content  could  not be used satisfactorily as forest  road construction material  unless it is treated  to increase its stability.  The improvement of the  physical characteristics of clay  soils  related  to  subgrade  construction  can  be achieved  by  mixing  lime  of certain proportion into   the soil. The purpose of this investigation  is to determine the amount  of lime required for subgrade stabilization  which  have high clay content  in Pulau Laut,  South  Kalimantan The investigation  reveals the following :1.  The  efective  amount   of  lime  stabilization of  soils  is 7 percent of  the dry  weight  of  the  soil, resulting  in the following  physical  properties  :-  Bearing capacity  is 167 kg/cm2 at air dry  condition,-  Percent  of swell is 2.3,-  Plasticity index  is 25.5,  and-  pH is 9.00.2.  Stabilization   with  7 percent  lime is most  effective  for use in forest  road subgrade containing  about  66% clay.
