Abstract

The utiliization of wood for cooling tower in Indonesia tends to increase and has become more important. Wood as material for cooling tower has been applied commercially in several developed countries such as New Zealand,USA and Japan. While in indonesia it has just been started in 1981 after the establishment of Kamojang Geothermal Power Station Unit 1. This paper deals with some experience in treating keruing wood (Dipterocarpus spp.) as material for cooling tower by vacuum-pressure impregnation. The result shows that keruing is easy to treat. In other to meet the retention of 24 kg/m3, the concentration of the solution must be at least 6.25 percent and absortion of 384 liters of preservative per cu.m.

Abstract

The  result  of  a study   on some  physical  and chemical  properties  of saga laut seed oil prepared  using pressing  method is presented   in this  report.The  result  shows   that  the  average  value  of  moisture   content,'  boiling  point,  specific  gravity,  iodine  number,   acid number   and saponification    value  respectively   are 0,137  percent,   166, 7 degrees celcius,  0,939,   31.04,   10,33  and  166, 72. Properties  of saga laut  seed  oil appear  to  be close  to  tengkawang  oil.

Abstract

Eceng gondok merupakan komoditi perairan yang memiliki nilai selulosa yang tinggi, penanganan pasca panen eceng gondok yang mudah dan hasilnya bermanfaat juga bernilai ekonomis tinggi diperlukan agar eceng gondok tidak merusak ekosistem perairan. Pembuatan briket dari bahan baku eceng gondok merupakan salah satu solusi untuk memanfaatkan eceng gondok. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mencari kadar perekat optimum briket eceng gondok dan mengetahui jenis briket eceng gondok yang terbaik untuk dikembangkan menjadi bahan bakar alternatif.

Abstract

Penggunaan bahan finishing kayu dewasa ini dikuasai oleh bahan finishing dengan pelarut mineral, seperti melamin dan nitroselulosa. Meskipun bahan finishing ini dapat memberikan kualitas finishing yang baik, awet serta harga yang terjangkau, namun kelompok bahan finishing ini melepas banyak polutan, sehingga dapat merusak lingkungan dan berbahaya bagi kesehatan. Dalam penelitian ini dilakukan eksplorasi penggunaan bahan alternatif berupa ekstrak kayu jati yang dicampur dengan sirlak untuk produksi pewarnaan kayu atau lapisan atas. Performa bahan finishing alternatif diuji secara fisis, mekanis dan kimia pada kayu tusam dan karet, serta dibandingkan dengan performa bahan finishing komersial, yaitu melamin formaldehida (MF) dan nitroselulosa (NS). Contoh uji kedua jenis kayu direndam dalam larutan bahan finishing kemudian dikeringkan. Perubahan berat dan dimensi contoh uji akibat rendaman ditentukan pada kondisi basah dan kering. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pertambahan berat dan perubahan dimensi akibat rendaman beragam menurut jenis kayu, orientasi serat dan jenis bahan finishing yang digunakan. Contoh kayu tusam mengalami perubahan berat dan dimensi lebih besar daripada kayu karet. Semua formula finishing organik mampu melindungi kayu dari intrusi air, namun tidak sebaik kelompok komersial MF dan NS. Formula lapisan atas ekstrak jati dan sirlak memiliki daya tahan terhadap larutan kimia dan ketahanan gores lebih rendah daripada MF dan NS. Namun demikian, formula pewarnaan kayu ekstrak jati dan sirlak memiliki nilai warna lebih baik daripada wood stain komersil.

Abstract

Analysis on the integrated production of charcoal and  wood vinegarhas  been conducted using the raw materials  of three wood species, i.e. mangrove (Bruguera sp.), mangium (Acacia mangium), and tusam (Pinus merkusii). As such, those three were each carbonized into charcoal through a direct burning  in a dome kiln with 2 m3 capacity;  and concurrently,  the distillation  through  the cooling of.the generated  gas/vapor fraction  was conducted to collect the wood vinegar. The resulting charcoal werefurther treated  either with or without purification process. To evaluate the qualities of the two products (i.e. charcoal and wood vinegar), the physico-chemical  and economic analyses were examined. Economic analysis covered the collection of data/information on purchasing prices of the equipment.  material-procuring cost for  the kiln, kiln-erection cost. production cost, cost of procuring auxiliary matters,  charcoal and wood vinegar prices,  and others, followed by their assessment. Results of the analysis  were as follows:Integrated production  of charcoal and the one of wood vinegar turned out to be the best with respect to their  technical  aspects and physico-chemical properties was from  the raw material of mangrove  wood species.  In this regard, the yield of charcoal and wood vinegar was the highest. Likewise, the qualities  of the charcoal could correspond to usage standard  of charcoal for iron ore. Also, the qualities of the wood vinegar could meet the Japan Standard Requirement.The implementation of purification treatment on the resulting charcoal could decrease the volatile matter content, and increase fixed carbon content and  calorific  value  without   affecting  the production of  wood  vinegar. As  such,   the  volatile  matter  contents  in mangium charcoal decreased from 27.09 percent  to  17.35   percent,  and  in tusam charcoal from 33.18  percent to 24. 79 percent.Productions of charcoal and wood vinegar for one m3  of wood were in the range of 181- 217 kg and 169 -  205 kg, respectively for mangrove wood;  110  -121 kg and 121 -  125  kg, respectively formangium wood; and 111-121 kg and 141  kg, respectively for tusam wood.Production of charcoal which is in  integration  with the one of wood vinegar can gain  a significant benefit. Such benefit can be achieved after 5 years of wood vinegar production, i.e.  82.6 percent per year from  mangrove wood, and  mangium as well as tusam wood.   Conversely, the production of  wood vinegar in integration with the one of charcoal can gain additional benefit, i.e. 39.7 percent per year from mangrove wood, and 39.9 percent per-year from mangium as well-as-tusam wood. The benefit per year of such integrated  production in the sixth year will be even greater, since the interest payment and loan can be ultimately fulfilled. All  the investment of the factory with implements an integrated production-of  charcoal and wood vinegar can be returned in one year and 3 months.

Abstract

Observations in this research were conducted in the IIIipe fat industry and in the laboratory. The observation in the fat industry was to get a clear discription of the fat processing of IIIipe nut, whilts in the laboratory was to study the extraction process of IIIipe fat with a hydraulic pressing technique. The pressure were conducted at several pressing levels: 25, 50, and 75 kg/cm2, at a pressing temperature of 50-60 oC for 20 minutes respectively.To produce IIIipe fats, the industry applies a combination technique of hydraulic pressure and hexane extraction. The yield of fat with this combination technique is around 40-50 %. However, the results of experiment in the laboratory showed that at an 50 kg/cm2 pressure produced yield of fat with a high quality indicated by the highest value of iodine number.

Abstract

Tulisan ini mengemukakan hasil analisis komponen kimia kayu dari kayu mangium pada beberapa macam umur. Analisis yang dilakukan meliputi penetapan kadar holoselulosa, selulosa, lignin, pentosan, abu, silika, kelarutan dalam air dingin, air panas, NaOH 1 % dan kelarutan dalam ethanol benzena.Hasil analisis memperlihatkan bahwa kadar holoselulosa berkisar antara 72,94-79,01%, selulosa 47,26-50,06%, lignin 20,99-27,06%, pentosan 15,89-17,45%, abu 0,26-0,88 %, silika 0,14-0,34 %. Kelarutan dalam air dingin 3,00-4,17%, air panas 6,02-9,26 %, Na0H 1 % 19,90-21,00% dan kelarutan dalam alkohol benzena berkisar antara 4,50-6,48%.Berdasarkan alas hasil analisis komponen kimia terutama dari kadar selulosa, lignin dan pentosan maka kayu mangium (Acacia mangium Willd) dengan umur 6 tahun, sangat baik untuk dibuat sebagai bahan baku pembuatan pulp dan kertas.

Abstract

Pada tahun 2007 mesin Expo-2000 dirnodifikasi menjadi lebih sederhana, berukuran kecil dan tenaga setara. Modifikasi ini diperlukan untuk mengantisipasi kondisi lapangan yang aksesibilitasnya rendah. Uji coba dilakukan pada tegakan pinus yang saat ini masih disadap getahnya, berada di Gunung Gadog, Desa Bojongkalong, Kecamatan yalindung, Sukabumi. Hasil uji coba memperlihatkan kinerja mesin cukup baik dengan produktivitas pengeluaran kayu rata-rata 8,38 m'.hm/jam. Namun demikian diperlukan beberapa perbaikan teknis yaim (1) Kereta kabel layang untuk mengangkut kayu dengan sistem pengunci kito model gunting, (2) Penyiapan tiang-tiang dan pemindah kereta angkut kabel layang dari jalur kabel yang satu ke kabel yang lain serta (3) Penyangga kabel layang yang mudah dipasang-bongkar. Analisis finansial dengan biaya investasi sekitar Rp 40 juta dan biaya sewa Rp 9.000/ m'.hm mendapatkan nilai NPV dan IRR berturut-turut Rp 40.409.449 dan 26,52%.

Abstract

A study on the use of farming tractor for  land tillage in timber estate  establishment was conducted at timber  estate area of  PT Barito Pacific Group in  South Sumatra  in 1991. The  objective  was to obtain technical and economic data on land tillage in timber estate using farming  tractor.  For this purpose, data on productivity, specification,  fixed cost and operating cost of ford farming tractor were collected. the  resuits were as follows   :1.    Land tiliage comprized three  activities namely.first plowing. second  plowing and harrowing.2.    Productiitrity in the first plowing ranged between 0.2184 ha/hour and 0. 3048 ha/hour with an average of 0. 2601 ha/hour.3.   Operation costs  in the first plowing varied from  63.206.  -/ha to Rp. 85,027.-/ha  with an average of   Rp. 71, 782.-/ha.4.   Productivity in the second plowing ranged between 0.2100  ha/hour and 0. 3240 ha/hour with an average of 0.2703 ha/hour5.    Operation COSIS in the second plowing varied from Rp. 57.315.,-/ha  to Rp. 88,428,-/ha  withan average of Rp.   69,583.-/ha.6.    Tractor productivity  in harrowing ranged between 0.3818 ha/hour and 0.5593  ha/hour with an average of 0.4702  ha/hour.7.    Costs for harrowing  varied from  Rp. 34,250.-/ha to Rp. 49,581,-/hq  with an average of Rp.  40,647.-/ha8.   Average cost of land  tillage using ford farming tractor was Rp. 182,012.-/ha.9.   it is suggested that soil condition in land tillage be considered to  save cost and power.

Abstract

One way to overcome the shortages of raw material for wood based industries in Indonesia nowadays is to utilize the lesser known wood species. Therefore, the basic properties of these lesser known wood species should be studied. Wood anatomy of nine lesser known wood species from East Kalimantan have been observed and described for identification purposes and for evaluation of their properties and then appropriate uses.For identification purpose several main features have been noted : 1) Perforation plat scalariform in Mastixia trichotoma and Drypetes sp.; 2) Closely spaced parenchyma bands and radial intercellular canal in Ficus variegata; 3) Parenchyma reticulate in Drypetes sp, Diospyro macrophylla and Koilodepas sp.; 4) Fiber septate in Glochidion philippicum; 5) Rays almos exlusively homocelullar with gum-like deposite in vessels o/Lansium sp.Seven out of nine wood species examined containfibers of medium quality for pulp and paper among others : Blumeodendron kurzii, Ficus variegata and Mastixia trichtoma. The other two species contain fibers with poor quality. Two species, Drypetes sp. and Koilodepas sp. have light colour and decorative appearance and with considerable strength to be used as raw material for fancy furniture and decorative panel. Ficus variegata has anatomical structure which allow it too easily be peeled in to fine decorative veneer for plywood.Key words : Lesser known wood species, wood anatomy, identification, fiber quality.
