Abstract

Preeclampsia is a major pregnancy complication that significantly contributes to maternal morbidity and mortality, particularly in developing countries. This study aimed to examine the association between maternal risk factors, specifically age and parity, and the occurrence of severe preeclampsia among delivering women at H.A. Sulthan Daeng Radja Regional Hospital, Bulukumba, Indonesia. An observational analytic study with a retrospective cross-sectional design was conducted using medical record data. A total of 50 women diagnosed with preeclampsia were included through total sampling. The independent variables were maternal age and parity, while the dependent variable was the severity of preeclampsia. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods, employing the chi-square test or Fisher’s exact test with a significance level of p < 0.05, and Odds Ratios (ORs) were calculated to estimate the strength of association. The results showed that most respondents were aged 20–35 years (80.0%) and multiparous (56.0%), with 60.0% classified as having severe preeclampsia. Bivariate analysis indicated that high-risk age was associated with an OR of 2.71 (95% CI: 0.65–11.34; p = 0.279), while high-risk parity had an OR of 1.84 (95% CI: 0.17–19.57; p = 1.000). In conclusion, no statistically significant association was found between maternal age and parity and the severity of preeclampsia. These findings suggest that maternal age and parity alone may not adequately predict severe preeclampsia without considering other contributing factors. Further studies with larger sample sizes and multivariate analysis are recommended to provide more robust evidence.
